Did Freeman really say he was OK with the first series of play calls that resulted in a punt in midfield To start the second half?

Defense was incredible, Buchner was up and down but very solid overall, offensive playcalling was a disaster. I was hoping that a new, more hands off HC would change our strategy in these games, but I'm forced to place the blame on Rees for last night. Hard to believe stat: Lorenzo Styles target 1: 54 yard reception, Lorenzo Styles target 2: Burns the OSU defense, but pressure on the QB forces an overthrow, Lorenzo Styles target 3:......there was no Lorenzo Styles target 3.

  • Well as a positive, we went toe to toe for three quarters against a consensus top 3 team when there is considered a big gap between 3 and 4. Al Golden looks like a fantastic hire and props to the defense for playing as hard and as well as they did. The only disappointment for me was the edge guys not really being able to generate pressure. In college football today, if your defense holds the other team to 21 points, you should win. We should feel really good about where we are defensively and our standout player didn’t really do anything.
  • I get why TR was conservative. We started a QB who has one full season starting in his last four on the road at OSU to open the season. He was not going very few chances. I don’t blame him unless you want to bring up not taking a QB in the portal like JT Daniels. The interior OL was obviously disappointing. No real push running the ball and got beat with pressure multiple times. I get that Patterson is out, but it is going to be way worse vs Clemson if we don’t get it sorted out.
  • I can’t believe we didn’t run the ball better. With as much hype as the OL got this offseason and with an athlete at QB as well as multiple backs that have contributed in the past plus Estime, I expected more.
  • The return game was very frustrating for us. I thought Joseph left yards on the field when he fair caught some punts and we got outworked on KOR. If we are constantly starting on the 15, let’s just fair catch it and not put our offense in a tough spot.

1. Hats off to defense and special teams. They played their asses off and gave ND a chance.

2. Rees called the game to protect Buchner.

3. Oline better improve real fast. That was most disappointing.

4. Until ND stats recruiting QB and WR like Ohio State and Clemson, ND offense will continue to look like Wisconsin with better unis. There's no other way around it.

OSU looked really damn good.
And ND held them way way below normal scoring. Buchner didn't look scared. He didn't make any big mistakes. A lot to build on here. But Tommy has to find ways to have more dynamic options for the offense. The next couple of games better be some experimenting.

The offense was pretty bla for me they need to get more WR’s involved. Where was Tobias Merriweather? I would of liked to see more deep shots or jet sweeps with Lenzy. Styles only catching one ball is inexcusable he needs 10 targets a game. The good thing is that offense and defense they faced last night is the best they’ll see all year. USC might be close with the weapons they have but their defense is trash. And Clemson’s defense might be just as good or better. I see ND going 10-2 on the year they’ll lose one of the USC or Clemson games but Buchner needs to grow up quick

Not absolving TR by any stretch of the imagination but that IOL, especially after JPatt left, didn’t instill any confidence that Buchner could drop back and deliver a dime. Seems like most times they did, he had defenders in his face.

Im assuming they tried to keep the game plan simple, albeit too simple, to limit Buchner’s chances of a turnover. Incredibly difficult environment to let TB loose.

Not defending the game plan. Just trying to have a balanced view point.

1. We are who we thought we were, and that's just fine!
2. The defense is elite, with speed and some serious thumpers that can mix and match. This year will be a treat watching them roll fools and as the cupboard gets more talent, holy cow.
3. Ohio State is a great example of how talent level matters, sure they sucked last year on defense but all it took was some better coaching/scheming and talent suddenly becomes really really talenty. Reesus didn't call his best game all night but everything we did will translate much better against all but one future opponent. Except for....
4. Wide receiver. Oof.
5. Buchner looked more accurate for most of the game than I expected and protected the ball on the road in a giga hostile environment. If this is the floor the ceiling looks pretty pretty pretty good.
6. I hope HH tries some stuff out with personnel the next couple weeks and Patterson rests up.
7. Clemson game still looms large but 10 wins looks very doable and NY6 is on the menu.
8. On to Marshall.

I think the play calling was a result of the O-line play in the middle.

More than anyone we'd have needed Quentin Nelson.
Interior OL was hot garbage all night. We all probably underestimated OSU's defensive line but either way they kept blowing us up, and our offensive struggles largely flowed from there.
You nailed it.

Who is #4 trying to block for Tyree on kickoff return? He got blown up several times. I wish I could see an aerial view of the kick returns to check for better lanes.

I'm not going to rehash anything people have touched on, but the broadcast was terrible. Fowler was such a homer and sounded so ridiculous hoping for OSU success. To Herbie's credit, he really tried to temper some of that imo and almost seemed uncomfortable. Also, there were like 4 plays completely missed by the cameras and they also got Hiestand confused with someone else and Golden confused with Powlus was it?

After last night, I raised the floor for this team just a little bit. Thats assuming Rees & Co get it figured out.

The defense was incredible. They played WAY above my expectations. I loved the true frosh CBs getting big time snaps. Morrison was very impressive.

The offense needs a lot of work. No way around that one. It will happen though. Buchner was decent and the OL will get better as the season progresses. Someone needs to step up at receiver.
I didn’t, I was at 10-2 but one of the wins was a real punch up either Ohio State or Clemson. Now I am 9-3 8-4 bc I think we lose to Clemson and a lot of the teams we should be have bad D but can punch like hell on Offense, UNC, USC, hell maybe Syracuse. In those games if we can’t be much much more offensively consistent we can and my prediction is will drop 1

The OL was certainly disappointing last night, and it definitely hurt the offense. No question. That being said, Lorenzo Styles having 2 targets all night is asinine. He could've been deadly in the short passing game that Rees refused to use last night.

I think more downhill running could've helped as well. My God stop with the side to side running against the fastest teams in the game. There's a time and a place. I detest Hairball and OSU is better than last year's matchup with Michigan, but Jimmy attacked them straight up.

Willing to read it all because you used bullet points and good grammar and punctuation. Sober positive take

Our center was just plain awful. Hard to pick out anyone on the line that had a good game...possibly Alt looked ok. The guards and center were awful, and the playcalling flat out sucked. Hard to defend Rees or Harry after that game. Having 3 WR catches isnt going to attract the talent we need there either

1. Thought D played well enough against a good offensive team, even though Foskey was nowhere to be found
2. O line was disappointing based on preseason expectations
3. Offense was hampered by constant poor field position...credit to OSU
4. Mayer was contained
5. Good punting (lots of attempts)
6. Lots to take away and go forward; LETS GO
7. Not aware of any significant injuries
8. TB played well in tough environment, no mistakes

My .02

1- This is a good team and we got a great year ahead.
2- I’m thrilled they walked into a top tier environment on day 1 ready to play.
3- Loved the Defensive game plan.
4- OSUs drive across the field late was perfect football, hard to appreciate, but it was done well.
5- Our Defense will keep us in every game this year
6- Our best catch of the night came from a Senior Walk-on… We NEED WR talent.
7- I thought Tommy called a good first half. I’m giving Tommy some benefit of the doubt that they were trying to take what the defense gave them in the 2nd.
8- Interior O-line clearly blew assignments and wasn’t ready. Fixing what Harry needs to fix isn’t overnight.
9- Alt is a manchild. Love watching him.
10- Offense… we have a talent gap.
11- We will be competing in every game we have left and beat Clemson- USC.

GO IRISH!
