I watched Trolley in the fall against Navy. He may be the fastest kid in D1 and boy does he have a "sick" Canadian game. Let's hope he's allowed to play and be creative offensively (in the right situations of course) going forward. He maybe the team's best dodger in space and is a match up nightmare when paired with Sergio et al. Better late than never. Great to see Kavanasty get back in the groove. Love this team......

Notre Dame up to #3 in RPI... with Brown's upset at the hands of Bryant, things are starting to normalize a little bit. It goes:
1. Maryland
2. Brown
3. ND
4. Yale
5. Denver

Realistically, these are your teams currently competing for the #1 seed.

ACC looks like a 2 bid league right now... unless ND lose to Marquette or Army they seem like a stone-cold lock, and then the ACC is likely to get one of Virginia or Syracuse. Only chance for a 3 bid league is if one of the RPI bottom dwellers wins the AQ.

Thanks. Appreciate the updates. I REALLY hope duke doesn't get in! Hopefully the Irish finish strong and bring this baby home!
Any updates on injuries?

Looks like Koshansky is out, in fact he might be out for the year. Not 100% sure on that.

Wynne is apparently fine. Epple is apparently good enough to go and it'll be a game time decision with him vs Sheridan for who starts. Collins will apparently be clear as well but I'm interested to see what we do with the midfield lines after Trolley's breakout. Do they bump him back down to the 2s? Seems like it would be a waste, especially because they could stick a pole on him down there. I would personally totally retool the lines to be Trolley-Brosco-Perkovic and Collins-Pridemore-Gray.

Still not quite what the heck happened to Pat Healy. Very good catch by ndlax2016... thought I for sure remembered him playing in the fall in the one scrimmage I took in. EDIT: He's definitely still enrolled, still on the roster, and at practice. So not quite sure why he isn't playing.

Obviously good news with Wynne and Collins.
I like your lines. I also liked the burst of energy Gaiss showed.

FYI, I'm guessing the game will have to be inside as SB has a nice layer of snow. 'April showers'...

Going to be tricky... on one hand, the forecast for game time is freezing rain. On the other hand, they have a sellout+ crowd of 5000+ expected for the game. And ESPN is in town.

So I don't see how it gets moved inside, unless it's an absolute must. I bet they'll shovel and play it outdoors and hope the freezing rains holds off.

Really sad that it'll be played in bad conditions, and also too bad this is a Duke team with their backs against the wall... if this was a front-running Duke team, they would just quit in the cold and get run over.

Really bad half for Notre Dame in the cold. Stick skills just terrible missed a bunch of EASY goals and thrown the ball away a ton.

Duke does this almost every year where they sleep wak through the beginning of the season and then start playing complete lacrosse once they get their backs against the wall.

Still only down one, so that's encouraging.

Notre Dame scores the last 3 goals of the game, wins 8-6. Held Duke which is one of the best offensive teams in the country to 2 second half goals... both of possessions where we got offensive middies stuck out there. Dodd and the defense were phenomenal.

Also, offense wasn't nearly as bad as the score would indicate. Probably should've scored 11-13 goals were it not for just some ridiculous misses/saves on what would normally be sure things. I counted at least 3 hit pipes and 4 "100%" scoring opportunities we missed. So it looks like the offense took a big step back, but they were playing in 40 degree weather and freezing rain which can make even the most basic stick skills difficult.

Solid win. Some obnoxious fan complaints (and exempting last week's game of course):

(1) Is it just me or does every face-off guy and goalie have their best game of the year against us? Who is to blame for that?

(2) The defense has been as advertised pretty much all year, at least in terms of goals against in the game vs. season average for opponents. The offense seems to have only really clicked last week, and that is looking more like the exception. This game felt more like the UVA game.

UPDATE: I'm glad to hear IrishLax is not as worried about the offense. I am not a lacrosse guy but I like to complain about games.

That weather was just damn miserable. Still a great game though. I'm amazed we held Myles Jones to zero goals today. Thought it was incredible how loose the refs were with wards, I saw three pretty blatant wards right in front of the refs that got missed from Duke and one or two from us.

I don't think your observations are bad, but one thing to remember with faceoffs is that Finley is going up against some pretty A+ guys. Kyle Rowe for Duke is literally the best in the nation. PJ Finley ranks 20th, which isn't great, but also doesn't suck. I was happy with how he battled, especially in the second half.

As for the offense, the best analogy I can give is that it would be like watching a football game where Kizer throws a perfect ball to an open receiver and instead of walking in for a TD he drops it. Or a play is blocked perfectly and when the RB hits the hole he trips on his shoelace. The initial reaction might be to look at the final score and say "8 goals! That's terrible! What's wrong with the offense?" which is completely valid, the same way looking at a football game and going "21 points! That's terrible! What's wrong with the offense?" is valid. At the end of the day, they didn't get the job done. BUT!

It's important to realize the weather conditions are about as bad as you can get for lacrosse, and that the offense we've seen the past two weeks has been MUCH better in design than we saw earlier in the year. Instead of the offense failing to score TDs because Brian Kelly keeps calling the same bad play or the QB sucks or something like that, it's just a lack of finishing on good design.

We'll learn a lot more next week against Marquette who has a truly elite defense.

Yeah, Kav got away with a couple wards for sure. Alternatively, Duke got away with murder. All in all I thought the refs did a good job or letting them play... except for that call on Perkovic where he held back on a hit where he could've absolutely DESTROYED a kid... and they still gave the Duke player a pity call. They've basically legislated any kind of big hit out of the game.

Totally jacked that they beat duke! I hope duke loses again next week as I still don't want to see ND play them in the tourney.
I agree that the offense had lots of opportunities and either didn't finish or just had good saves against them, but they definitely lost focus a few times too. The weather sucked but they really had some lackadaisical turnovers.
The thing that obviously stuck out the most to me in this game is that their D is elite! I also loved seeing a tired jones fail in the fourth quarter!

Defense and Doss were awesome. Too many unforced errors and stupid penalties on offense to win the SHIP. How many times did we make unforced bad passes? Clean up the stickwork guys or you'll be disappointed again in the FF. Marquette is a major trap game. They are very strong defensively (maybe the best we've faced to date) and can easily beat the Irish. Would hate to see ND take a seedings hit due to a loss to Marquette.

Notre Dame holds on to the #1 spot in the media poll.

Looks like what I said Friday was correct on Koshansky... out for the year. So your SSDMs will be headlined by Schantz + Gaiss, with Robert Collins in the rotation + Timmy Phillips getting limited runs.

Epple and Wynne played, as expected.

Brendan Collins did not play, will have to inquire again about him. The EMO is going to be rough without Collins as Gray lacks the necessary shooting and stick skills... I wonder if there are any solutions for that spot, we don't really have any other outside shooters.

Here's a flawed (but definitely neat) look at tournament probabilities: NCAA Tournament: Chances of Making the Field

Basically has Notre Dame, Denver, and Maryland as locks even with a lot of lacrosse left to play. This is probably accurate, as Notre Dame could lose each of their next four and probably still get in. What's very interesting is that 4 through 16 all basically have really close at-large probabilities... meaning that there is a LOT to be decided on the field over the next month. The ACC seems like a 2 bid league, which is shockingly bad. Better believe that Duke and North Carolina will be playing like caged animals in all of the remaining games.

'Cuse just lost to a terrible Cornell team in OT after winning 18 of 22 faceoffs lol.....

ACC is a dumpster fire this year, but Notre Dame gets a peaking UNC after a very tough Marquette team so it's going to be interesting to see how this all unfolds. Got a long rest before UNC though.

Totally shocked when I saw that score last night. I know it doesn't help ND's RPI, but I say the fewer ACC teams in the tourney, the better for the Irish. All the ACC teams still have a lot of talent, and it's tough to keep beating the same teams!
Hopefully they come to play today, as this could definitely be a trap game for them.

Notre Dame dominating so far but not much to show for it. A bunch of great scoring opportunities missed and the Irish lead 2-1. A combination of inaccurate shooting, bad handles, and great goalie play for Marquette. Perkovic should have 3 goals already... missed 3 easy set shots. Playing without Brosco or Collins today, so the first midfield features Riccardi... which I think is a strange choice.

Marquette's goal was an 18 yard crappy bounce shot that somehow went in. In other news, it looks like one of Marquette's best offensive players might've suffered a bad injury... could derail their season if serious.

And Riccardi scores his first goal of the season on a great individual effort! #WhyIDon'tCoach

ND 5 Marquette 2 at half... Kavanagh leads the way with 2 goals and an assist, should've had like 5 assist but people keep letting him down. Had an excellent feed to Pierre Byrne right before halftime but he couldn't finish.

Annnnnnd we have a ball game. Marquette gets one with an incredible backhanded shot, and then Perkovic gets caught on defense and does a poor/lackadaisical job and it's a one goal game.

EDIT: Tie game. Absolute implosion by ND to start this quarter. Look lazy out there. ND takes a timeout.

Sexton goes coast-to-coast with 3 seconds left in the quarter and scores to make it ND 7 Marquette 5 heading into the 4th. Really bad start to the quarter for ND but they got it together after the timeout.

Perkovic/Wynne having pretty terrible games, while Kavangh has been doing a great job.

And Schantz forces offense for absolutely no reason while we're subbing, turns it over, gives up a fast break, and now it's ND 7 Marquette 6. ND just giving up tons of cheapies playing silly. Then lazy defense from LANDIS of all people and he goes for a hero trail check and gives up a goal.

All tied up at 7.

Marquette timeout with 6:00 left. All tied up at 7. Refs waived off a Notre Dame goal supposedly because Wynne landed in the crease before scoring... extremely questionable call.

Not looking good for the home team. Marquette ball with 3 minutes left and all tied up. Refs are just letting Marquette hold it for huge chunks of time.

Now timeout ND with a minute left. Marquette had the ball for a full 4 minutes possession.

Overtime...

The stat lines for Wynne and Perkovic are NOT going to be kind after this game. Both should at least have hat tricks, but they've just not finished their opportunities.

Kavanagh wins it in OT! Carried the freaking team today.

Offense scored one total goal in the second half. I don't want to overreact to a short-rest trap game, but they were given many opportunities to basically blow this game open and instead totally blew it. They ran really good offense in the first half, but missed wide open shots that could've really put it out of reach. Marquette adjusted to have a short stick on Wynne pretty much the entire second half and he did NOTHING except stagnate the offense. This is the formula people used last year against him but it seemed this year he had improved at dodging/feeding so that teams couldn't do that anymore. Perkovic got lots of good scoring opportunities in the second half but his accuracy was off (again) and Riccardi kept deferring despite good matchups. Garnsey had lots of mistakes and Trolley was really bad at dealing with the long pole. The "second line" didn't get much run at all but had some bad turnovers as well.

Notre Dame needs to come up with a sub-package for Wynne for games like this and they need to hope Brosco/Collins get healthy sooner rather than later.
