2016 Oregon athlete Lamar Winston had a big junior season and is prepping to lead his Central Catholic in 2015.
“The offseason is going well,” Winston told Irish Sports Daily. “I have been doing a lot of working out and lifting. I have been doing some parachute training too. I am really looking forward to St. John Bosco (Calif.) coming up here this year.
“Our 7-on-7 has started. I was supposed to play on a 7-on-7 team earlier, but I had AAU basketball, so I couldn’t make it. I have told two colleges recruiting me for basketball that I am going to play football over basketball.”
Notre Dame is a team that has yet to offer the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, but they are keeping close tabs on Winston.
“A couple months ago, I talked to one of their coaches and he asked if I had any interest in Notre Dame,” stated Winston. “I told him I did and they will be in contact. Then one of their recruiting coordinators contacted my coach and asked about me. He wanted my height, weight and info about me. After that, they followed me on Twitter.”
With Winston holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Cal, Michigan, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA and USC among others, Notre Dame is still a school he has great interest in.
“I know a little about Notre Dame,” he explained. “I am going to look i to them. If I get the offer, I will look deep into them like I have with other programs. I have a top eight and hopefully knock it down to a top six in a few weeks. Notre Dame would definitely be included on my list if the offer comes through. It’s a great school.
“I am thankful and blessed. I am very excited for all the opportunities that have been presented to me. I can’t explain how excited I am for National Signing Day.”
This summer, the four-star prospect will take a big tour to see some of the top West Coast schools in the country. Notre Dame and Michigan are two schools he feels official visits would be needed for distance reasons.
“I have a lot of visits planned for this summer,” said Winston. “I am going on a tour of schools at the end of June. I will see Oregon, Washington, California, USC, UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State. I want to get to Michigan, but it’s way to far, so I will be using an official visit to see them. If Notre Dame offers, I would use another official visit to see them.”
For Winston, it is still up in the air which position he will play at the next level, but it doesn’t matter much to him. He is ready to do whatever is needed to win.
Most schools are recruiting me as an athlete right now,” he explained. “Some are strictly at linebacker and others see me as a receiver. I don’t have a preference which side of the ball I play on. I just want to give my all to the team and contribute in as many ways as possible.
“I am planning on making my college decision sometime after my senior season.”
