Not that anyone cares, because there is still a real world cup going on today, but the lacrosse world cup kicks off today in Denver.

Biggest storyline for this year is definitely the Iroquois team. In 2010, they couldn't participate after England refused to acknowledge their passports and sovereignty. It was a bunch of political bureaucracy and bullshit and the English refused to bend because the Onondaga Nation had not followed the proper procedures or whatever to get recognized. It was unreal to watch unfold. The United States offered to let them all participate on US passports, but the Iroquois basically said "Thanks, but fuck you too. We invented this game and if we can't participate independently then we're not playing."

This year, they bring an incredibly talented roster to the games. The offense is as good or better than USA/Canada and it seems like a three horse race for the championship. Whether they're truly competitive will likely depend on their defense/goalie/faceoffs... but this is top to bottom the best group they've ever brought to the games.

Also, Uganda is fielding an international team for the first time. This is really exciting for me personally as I put a fair amount of effort into helping former Notre Dame player/coach Kevin Dugan launch their program through Fields of Growth. They've come a long way in a short time and I'll definitely be rooting for them.

Canada vs. USA kicks things off tonight on ESPN2. Tactically, I'm interested to see how Canada looks without John Grant Jr. who is one of the greatest players of all time. He's been on medication for a staff infection for awhile and requested a waiver to continue taking it while participating in the games (it includes testosterone) but was denied... he's the heart and soul of the Canadian team and led them to the championship in '06 and almost won it for them last time around in '10.

Anyways, tune in at 9 tonight if you're interested. The rest of the games I think will be streamed online at ESPN3 or live on their TV networks. I'll try to keep this thread updated.

My boys and I are totally pumped for this. Interesting story about the Iroquois last time. We figured they would be dangerous. Hopefully the US pulls through again!

Was an interesting game. After losing in 2006 and dropping a game in 2010 (and getting lucky to win in the finals) they really retooled the defense. Much more cohesive team defense now with physical play and body position instead of a bunch of individuals running around trying to throw takeaway checks.

That Canadian team was not the same without Grant. They're missing a QB... they're also missing a guy who can beat his man regularly to command double teams. Their best bet is going to be to run more of a motion offense like Denver... I dunno if they really have time though to install something like that (even in basic form) between now and the knockout round. But they should try. They experimented with a lot of different personnel groupings tonight and are clearly searching for an identity.

Everything tomorrow is streaming... ESPN3 schedule:
8 AM - Netherlands vs China
11 AM - Scotland vs Thailand
2 PM - Germany vs. Belgium
5 PM - Australia vs. Japan (decent game... Aussies can ball, Japan isn't horrible)
8 PM - England vs. Iroquois (definitely tune in for this. England won 2012 Euros and is solid... would be even better if Scotland/Wales/etc. merged up into one UK team. Iroquois offense could really light up the scoreboard in this one.)

Uganda takes on Ireland tomorrow at 2:30 but that game is pay per view.

We too were very impressed with the defensive effort the US gave. You can definitely tell these guys are excited to be there and have decided to come in as a team and do what they can to take this.

My son and I watched it. First Lax game I've ever watched. Had no clue what was going on.

Glad you tuned in. To be honest, these games are probably not the best to get introduced to the sport. These games are closer to Olympic basketball than World Cup soccer. The USA is deeper and more talented player for player than any other team out there, and can only really be challenged by a couple teams.

There also isn't as much stoppage in play for teaching moments. For contrast, during the NCAA games the ESPN announcers do a lot of explaining and teaching to the viewing audience. Makes it easier to understand the rules and what's happening.

Haha they're on ESPN3 in 45 minutes if you want to see them smackdown Thailand...

EDIT: turns out all listed times are in MDT... so add two hours to everything for east coast.

Scotland up 15-1 on Thailand at halftime. And they allegedly brought bagpipers. Good day overall so far for the United Kingdom... Wales handled Russia 10-2.

Asian teams seem to be way behind the 8-ball while the European teams are getting better and better. China got stomped 19-4 by the Netherlands. Interested to see how Japan fares against Australia, likely won't be pretty.

Iroquois getting it going right now on ESPN3. Faceoff coming up in a couple minutes. The Iroquois have never medalled... highest finish ever has been 4th. This could be the year they break through.

8 first quarter saves for 37 year old young "Big Ben" McAllister and England is knotted up with the Iroquois after one quarter.

I remember growing up when Australia actually had a decent lacrosse tradition. A bunch of friends used to spend winters there (summer in Australia) playing on club teams.
Took a little while for the US team to get going vs canada, but they are clearly a more athletic team. Mike Evans is a savage out there, love how physical he plays.

The Iroquois thing from years ago was a definite political ploy, but I respect it. They basically had sheets of paper with their names on it. With all the security issues from terrorism, they wouldn't let them in. Like you said, Hillary offered butchery refused. Remember feeling horrible for the players who worked so hard.

You happen to watch the England/Iroquois game from last night? Got super chippy... almost boiled over into a fight a couple different times. Some bad blood there.

Australia is so interesting. They're still very good in the women's game (won the whole thing in 2005 and came in second by a goal in 2009) and they've never finished worse than 3rd in the men's... but they're clearly not progressing at all while everyone else seems to be taking their game to the next level.

This year they struggled with Japan who just got smacked hard today by the Iroquois... and all of the British teams continue to get better and better every year. So not only are they likely to finish out of the medals this year but they might not even make the semifinals. Maybe lacrosse in their country has reached its status quo while it continues to explode everywhere else on the globe.

Uganda lacrosse bumped up to ESPN3 today at 4 PM versus France... so I'll have this running on my mobile device during the other world cup final.

Canada vs. Iroquois at 10 PM ET is the game to watch today. On ESPN.

Lax-- I find it intriguing that the Iroquois have a national team... Are any other tribes trying to get a team?

The Iroquois team actually includes members from many individual "tribes." The Haudenosaunee (or in English they're referred to as the Iroquois Confederacy or Iroquois League) was an assembly of six distinct Native American nations (or what you're referring to as "tribes"). The group is referred to in modern times as Six Nations of the Iroquois League... or Six Nations for short.

The Six Nations that comprise the Iroquois League are: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, and Tuscarora. You've got about 50,000 Native Americans in Canada and 100,000 Native Americans in the United States that are part of the Six Nations.

No people still hold lacrosse as such a strong part of their identity as the Six Nations Iroquois. But there were many other peoples who played it as well... Algonquian, Choctaw, Cherokee, etc. In general, lacrosse was most played in the eastern woodlands but did extend past that into the plains on some occasions (mostly in Canada).

The Haudenosaunee ("Iroquois Nationals") team will on occasion accept a player with ties to another Native American nation/tribe on a case by case basis. On this year's team they have one Ojibwa player from Canada, and one reserve goalie who's Cherokee and also happens to be the only Native American head coach in college lacrosse.

I missed the Iroquois game but the matchup between them and Canada should showcase some awesome stick work tonight. I love the way the box game influences their style into that hybrid they play.

Holy crap people are missing out if they're watching the other World Cup... Uganda is up 2-1 on France after the first quarter.

It's crazy watching them play because they have the stick skills of a high school JV team (if that) and are super small... but they are fast as hell and extremely aggressive. They're basically playing "black" defense every possession and the French team can't handle the pressure at all. The Uganda team is running them ragged. Only French goal came as a result of Uganda being two men down. This one fat female referee needs to put her flags away.

Tune in to ESPN3 to watch.

EDIT: Wheels falling off the Uganda bus. They've run out of steam by the looks of it... 5-2 France at halftime.

Canada gonna run away with this, now up 4-1 on goal by ND alum David Earl. Just too much of an advantage on defense/faceoffs. Three miraculous saves by the Canadian goalie so far.

Iroquois have missed 3 or 4 sure goals now. Not sharp enough... needed to bring their A game against Canada. Cody Jameison is going full Wondolowski on some of these misses.

The Iroquois moved Lyle to attack and all of a sudden they've gone on a huge run and tied it up at 8 in the 4th quarter.

Iroquois lose 9-8 on a Canada goal with seconds to play. Absolute robbery by the officials at the end of the game. Disgraceful.

Article on all the fighting from yesterday: Quint's World Games Blog: Sportsmanship Took the Night Off Sunday | Inside Lacrosse

England/Australia game ended in a brawl. They've always been big rivals and played hot contests... but that reallllly boiled over. That was kind of crazy to see on this large an international stage.

The article also bemoans some Iroquois defenders playing with handcrafted, old-school hickory sticks. Yeah, they were laying the lumber... literally. So what? When Jim Brown played lacrosse EVERYONE was swinging sticks like that. Time to nut up. The game is supposed to be vicious and physical.

If some Iroquois defenders want to play with heavy sticks that are a DISADVANTAGE in everything besides checking and Canadians want to bitch about it... well, suck a fat one Canada. The Iroquois players are probably 50 pounds smaller and 4 inches shorter man for man. Retaliating at the very end after you put the game away was a bitch move... you want to shove back, do it like a man when the game is in question.

In short... fuck pansies, fuck Canada, go Iroquois.
