I think he may be the key to this offense this year.
I sort of agree with you. Interesting that you say this. I have been thinking a lot about slot lately. Here is the progression.
ND has a tight end that can block in line, run good routes and be deadly attacking the seam. You say we have had phenomenal tight ends for as long as you can remember? I agree, but this year we have quarterbacks with the arm that can exploit it.
I remember going into last year with conversations (as late as) questioning whether we have a receiver that could consistently take the top off of a defense. Now we have two, maybe three, with some level of consistency in their overall game.
We also are getting the feeling that backs out of the backfield will contribute to this offense's productivity.
With that, I don't see talking slot as an Amir conversation exclusively. Amir has always had some real shake and bake. He does very well in space, and has an extra gear. But part of what makes him so dangerous is what happens when he isn't on the field; namely CJ Prosise. CJ may not look it but he consistently weighs in at around 220 lbs. And he consistently shows his speed, which is plentiful. This year from all of his clips it looks like he has made a confident adjustment to his position, and his pass catching is improved.
What intrigues me about this all is the position group, specifically accounting for the different profile each of these young guys presents. Think about it! Big heavy linebacker on a run oriented team? Amir leaves him in the dust! DB in a dime package? No way CJ doesn't burry 'em! Because with the overall receiving skills of this offense, and the threat of having every quarterback on the roster being able to tuck the ball and run, you are rarely going to get a situation with more than an overmatched one-on-one at this position. And if everybody else does their job, there isn't going to be a whole lot of help over the top!
