Remove specific player names and positions and just set this post to repeat every year at this time.

I wouldn't say this necessarily true, especially for the 2019 class. The staff basically had the 2019 class wrapped up by August. I think there was a stat that said Notre Dame only landed 5 commitment since July. That isn't because they can't finish, its because they either 1.) had already gotten commitments from their top guys or 2.) have identified a target(s) and have been going after them.

I remember, before Kelly and staff seemed to change the recruiting strategy, where they would be scrambling for guys in mid December and into January. Nile Sykes, Kolin Hill, and Pete Mokwuah are ones that come to mind; these are all guys that were offered basically at the 11th hour because the staff couldn't finish.

So, with the recruiting strategy of 2014 and around then, you could say that recruiting started hot and then would end ice cold. But the 2018 and 2019 recruiting classes have showed us that those days are over. Notre Dame is identifying talent and getting offers out (for the most part) early and they are filling classes without leaving talent/number gaps at important positions.

Yup. Hows Rodas Johnson, Jowon Briggs and Mazi Smith doin?

Pretty sure the staff stopped recruiting Johnson and Briggs. In fact, I think basically everyone quit recruiting Briggs. The guy committed to UVA with some huge, big time offers; I don't think that is a coincidence. Mazi Smith? UM probably just beat ND on that one.

Plus, Notre Dame got their top guys in Lacey and Spears so it doesn't even matter.

I'm not upset about losing them and I'm happy with who we got. My point was we thought we had an embarrassment of riches with our DT recruiting last year. We had Lacey and were the presumed favorites for all three of them, and all were highly rated at the time (Rodas has since dropped to a 3 star). We thought we were gonna have to turn down the commitment of a top 150 d-lineman, which is crazy for our standards.

Not really, that's basically what happened. We stopped recruiting Rodas along with multiple other schools. We had a large pool along the defensive line in 2019 and the staff hit on who they wanted to.

I don't know what you're saying here. My post was intimating that 1.5-2 years in advance of any given class, we think we're going to sign top 5-10 talent at every position.

That doesn't usually happen at every position. I'm not deriding the staff's plan. I'm saying we are still 13 months from the final signing day of 2020. At this time last year, we had Jacob Lacey verbal'd. The next commit was KJ Wallace 1/28/18.

At this time 2 years ago, we had 5.

We are in a good spot with a top 10 QB, and two of the top 3 TEs. I think it's pointless to worry about positions until we can really gauge interest. If we get to Sept/Oct and we still haven't received verbals for a position, then I'll start to be concerned.

Last year, our secondary looked only partially complete going into signing day and then it finished loaded with some late additions.

Is my point coming across?

But while the feeling of the Buckeyes became strong once he visited Ohio State in October and the offer gave him an opportunity to play there, the Buckeyes were a part of his life, without him fully realizing it, almost a decade earlier.

Rob Sims was a freshman offensive lineman at Ohio State in 2002 when the Buckeyes beat Miami in the Fiesta Bowl and won the BCS National Championship.

After he graduated from Ohio State, he was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2006 and spent four years with them before being traded to the Detroit Lions.

In 2009, Gee Scott Sr. owned an auto detailing business, his most notable clients being Seattle Seahawks players.

Scott Sr. and Sims connected immediately and became fast friends.

When Scott Sr. was at his lowest point, in 2009, Sims gave him a place to stay when Scott Sr. was living out of his car.

At that point, his boys were living with their mom.

But when it was time for them to visit dad, they had a place to go.

Every other weekend, when Scott Sr., had his two sons, they would stay in the room with their dad, in Sims' house.

Almost a decade ago, a former Buckeye star helped the Scott family, in ways the younger Scott didn't fully realize or understand, and the first seeds for Ohio State were planted.

As he blossomed as a player, Scott didn't think there was any opportunity to play at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes recruited around the country, but rarely ventured to the Pacific Northwest.

So he made the trip for the unofficial that would change his future, and tie him back to the program that produced a player, but more importantly to Scott and his family, a friend and a mentor, that gave them a second chance.

"Rob Sims saved my life," Gee Scott Sr. said. "Rob gave me a place to stay when I was living out of my car for a little bit. He saved my life. He gave me a room in his house and allowed my boys to come stay when I would get them every other weekend. I was battling depression and had given up on life."

That's why this commitment to the Buckeyes means more than just a chance to play in the Big Ten.

"This commitment is more than football," said Scott Sr.

Scott Sr. is now a local media personality in Seattle, one of the most renowned MC's and auctioneers, a radio host and the Seahawks Game Day personality.

He's instilled in his sons the importance of hard work, commitment and loyalty.

His son said once he commits, his word is bond.

"My father has always talked about loyalty and being loyal and when you give your word, you keep your word," said Scott. "I've always said that when I commit, that is the only commitment I'm giving. I'm never going to change it. My word is my word."

But for now, he'll continue to embrace the opportunity the Buckeyes gave him, but more importantly, the opportunity a Buckeye gave to his family.

Got Open in Oakland today, scored a 124.74. Measured in at 6-2.5/207

With #1 WR Julian Fleming most likely heading to OSU and possibly a few other higher rated WR's, is it possible Gee could get cold feet?

Full disclosure, I really like this kid. Always have, always will.

Reached out to my PSU connects about Flemming. They said that they will NEVER give up recruiting him. They want him bad. They even said they will recruit him harder if commits somewhere else. Also said Clemson feels the same way. Gee Scott may be safe at OSU
