Dont look for Michael Carmody to put his final list of colleges on Twitter. The most heavily recruited football player in the WPIAL class of 2020 isnt one for publicizing his recruiting much.
But that doesnt mean Carmody doesnt have some favorite schools in his mind.
Carmody, a 6-foot-7, 295-pound offensive tackle at Mars High School, might make a college decision this summer. He has been on the road the past few weeks, checking out a few schools, including Miami. He plans to go to Texas A&M on May 10-12.
Like thousands of high school players who use Twitter to always say they are blessed to receive a scholarship, Carmody will tweet his scholarship offers when he gets them. But thats about it for his recruiting news on social media.
Im not one of those guys who likes all the media attention with recruiting or would send out a list of finalists, said Carmody, rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com. I dont even like to say anything when Im going to visit a place. If Id do anything, Id just maybe announce some official visits.
But about those schools he likes
Im OK saying a few of them, Carmody said. Ive been around Penn State a bunch, Ohio State a bunch, Pitt and Michigan a bunch and Virginia Tech a bunch. Those schools have always made me feel like a priority. Its awesome to feel like that.
Those schools have showed me the most love. Those are the schools that I have put a lot of focus into.
Besides the aforementioned schools, a few others that have offered scholarships are West Virginia, Auburn, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Wisconsin and Virginia. Notre Dame, which has not offered, is scheduled to come to Mars on Tuesday and see Carmody.
Besides his family and coaches, Carmody also has been getting a little recruiting advice from Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, who lives in Mars. Colberts son, Dan, played basketball at Mars years ago and his coach was Carmodys father, Rob.
Hes just somebody who has been helpful because he gets around to a lot of places as the Steelers GM, Michael Carmody said. He talks to a lot of offensive line coaches. Hes been great to our family in this process.
One of the reasons Im going to visit Texas A&M is because Kevin Colbert had a lot of great things to say about them.
Carmody has been on the road a lot in the past month or so. He spent a few days in Italy last week playing in an all-star tournament with mostly players from Ohio. It is the third year Carmody has played in the tournament. His older brother, Robby, also played in the Italy tournament a few years ago. Robby is a freshman basketball player at Notre Dame.
We won the championship in Italy. Robby never did, Michael Carmody said with a laugh. Thats something I have over Robby.
Michael Carmody said he has no plans to graduate early from Mars and enroll at a college in the spring of 2020. He will be at Mars for all of his senior year.
I want to stay around school, score my 1,000th point in basketball and play for my dad one last time, Carmody said.
