This isn't something you can use stats to support or refute. It's a matter of watching games (and listening to analysts that watch the games) and seeing that good teams don't respect him throwing deep. They go man and put 8 guys in the short and intermediate area because they aren't afraid of giving up a big play.

It's not rocket surgery. Even Pitt was able to totally neuter him with this approach. It only takes beating teams deep once or twice a game to discourage stacking the box. But Book doesn't do that.

I agree with all the above. But I also think our WRs are an issue. Both can be true. While teams never respected his deep ball, he would hit an occasional one to Claypool or Finke. If we're being honest about Book, we can also be honest about guys like Javon and Skowronek. They wouldn't be starting, or maybe even not in the rotation, at any of the proverbial top 10s. I think part of it is also just BK's offense. We've never been a long ball team. In the 10 years of BK, Books AVGs are 2 of the top 3. And the only one ahead of him is by a skinny margin.

I agree with you except USC has had more success at QB than you're giving them credit for. Barkley, Kessler, and Darnold were all very good QBs, and Slovis seems like he'll be up there too.

If we're saying Bama has had multiple great QBs in the BK era, then so has USC.

You’re right. Just hard to give SC any credit. Their Big problems have Not been at the QB position.

Da fuq is rocket surgery? Also I distinctly recall Book hitting Boykin over the top in 2018 to win the game late in the fourth quarter.

2:23. Solid example though.

Wow. A single example. Cool.

I mean, he gave you one, and I provided one a few pages back. I also went through that whole season and made a tally of every 25+ yard pass from both Wimbush and Book in 2017. What have you done to support your position besides say "Daaa...Book is bad!"

If by "work the pocket" he means bail on the pocket entirely too soon, then sure...

Ian answered the call against the #1 team, got us to overtime and won. Book haters can suck it.

At the same point if he doesn’t fumble we probably don’t need overtime. Good to see him put it behind him though.

I will eat my words on Ian earlier on the game thread. Dude bounced back after the fumble and delivered. Assuming we don’t win a NC, this is his legacy game.

Exceptional finish from him. That’s his legacy. Biggest win of the last 20+ years. Congratulations Ian!

posted this in post game thread, but should have posted here...

Hats off to Book. Played a helluva game. 378 total yards, 1 TD, 2 more TDs dropped.

Some of the Book bashing was silly as hell tonight. Worked his way through three key drops, 2 of which would have been TDs. Worked his way through the lack of PI calls. Made several clutch 3rd down conversions even when play calling was predictable. Made huge pick ups with his legs. Led the late 4Q drive. And never gave up through the entire game including OT.

I honestly didn’t think he’d get it done. I’m extremely happy I WAS TOTALLY WRONG.

The breaks were beatin the boys and went out and won one for ND universe

Book has achieved Legend status. He will now be remembered as a legend. He earned it with his play. He’s had a great record and now has the signature win for the program in a generation.

If he gets a Natty, he’ll go to All Time Legend status

I’m proud of him and the team/coaches

I was a Wimbush guy
I was, briefly, an Ian guy.
Then a Phil guy.

Ian Book is going down in the history books now. Bless that man.

Wasn't in the game thread tonight, there was Book bashing?!?! Fumble was ugly but BY FAR the best game of his career. Hell of a game, so happy for him.

Not a bunch, but a few. My favorite was "if we benched Book, we'd be blowing out Clemson" lol...

And several other ticky dot comments about him completing a pass, but should have seen another WR...

Yes, we got some help from the D, but the D also looked charmin soft at times too, and gave up 400+ to back up QB. A very good back up though. We also had to battle the refs and a 3 key drops.

Yup, credit the defense for bottling up Ettiene for the most part and stepping up BIG in 2OT, but I was pulling my hair out as DJU absolutely torched us through the air. Way too many yards passing, some of it was way too easy. Book had to earn his yards with his feet and with a far less impressive crew of receivers in comparison. Amari Rodgers and Cornell Powell made our DBs look awful.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy the way some of our WRs stepped up at times tonight, but watching our WRs vs their WRs tonight.... Goodness huge gap. And yep, Rodgers and Powell good gracious. Book had tight windows and 50/50, Uiagalelei had a lot of wide open shots. Wilkins had Clemson's secondary burnt, but unfortunately it was on a down when the OL struggled.

I just hope we see more Wilkins in the mix.

I agree, our WRs stepped up at some big times tonight. I like them because they're Irish, and I'll support them to hell and back, but I can objectively say that they're not as skilled as that Clemson WR group. I think each of our starters stepped up at least once or more for big plays, and it was enough to win the game.

Well McKinley was evaluated for a head injury in 2 OT so we’ll have to see his status for next week.
