I...had no idea that was the case. Do you know why that is? Are women's sports just more popular overseas? Or do they were tighter outfits (a move that I would enjoy for most players not named Mr. Griner)?

The top Russian league has franchises owned by rich [VERY rich] old Soviet thugs who like watching girls play basketball and crowing over their rivals by beating them. One owner insists on coming to lots of practices and putting his hands on the girls. Since he doesn't insist on anything more, they put up with it and smile at him.

Because the Russian A-League is a bidding war, the US and Aussie girls emphasize their schedules there, often delaying showing up for the WNBA season until the Russian league is over. WNBA teams have tended to begin seasons stinking the courts up, and suddenly getting way better. Other teams have lost key players permanently. A third issue is that few non-US players are bothering to come over here at all --- part of this is salary, but part of this is that they don't feel welcome on the teams [feeling prejudiced against at least to a degree --- all this is "out there" if one is willing to work at digging the frank commentary out.]

Jewell MIGHT have reasoned this out this way: Get drafted high/ make a few bucks/ impress a Russian Money Daddy with her WNBA season/ go overseas and make some real money. I hadn't put those pieces together, but that could make pragmatic short-term economic sense. I don't know if Skylar is yet doing this, but if she is then that could have influenced Jewell.

I think this is a bad move. After the game Muffet McGraw said she hope to have a team next year with an attitude and I wonder if that scared her away. Let's be honest UConn is the University of Women's College Basketball right now. Skylar and Brianna Steward (from UConn) could've left after their junior year and both opted to stay. I think Loyd while a high pick this year and next year is backing down from competition.

I also read comments from someone off ESPN's story that ND will hold Loyd out of their record books until she graduates? If that is true good for them.

The more and more college kids that leave early gives a bad taste in my mouth.

As far as Russia goes. Classic money laundering. I doubt the there is real excitement about the sport. They do it in men sports as well. Star hockey players make sometimes more over there(tax free) than in the NHL.

From the ESPN article on Loyd:

When asked during the Oklahoma City Elite Eight about the possibility of Loyd leaving, McGraw told ESPN, "[Loyd] did come in and say, 'You know, I know I'm allowed to leave now, but I just want to let you know that I'm not.' So we did have that conversation, which put my mind at ease. I was happy."

Griner plays in China for big bucks.

Kayla McBride and Bria Hartley play for a Hungarian Team.

Definitely bad for ND if she goes through with it.

"backing down fron competition" ??? Really, by going to the place that only the best play?

If ND removes Loyd records ... she's already in them they're gonna have to remove Jerome Bettis's records. Clausen didn't graduate for two years after he left ND for the NFL. His records were in the next media guide just like those of The Bus.

The ESPN comment section is NOT a source. An ND Media guide IS.

She has already declared hasn't she? As much as I'd love to have her back, I think she'll stick with her decision.

She is playing against the best, but she's not winning against the best.

Point made...more & more college kids are leaving early.

Really? Lloyd won against more top 25 teams than UCONN did. She has beaten UCONN 3 times which is more than most players can say. UCONN is a powerhouse and doesn't lose often in the tournament (or any other time really). I think Lloyd has beaten the best during her time at ND. Not winning Tuesday should not diminish what she has accomplished during her time at ND.
