Notre Dame swipes Derek Roback away from Toledo

Notre Dame swipes Derek Roback away from Toledo

Per ESPN's Bill Hodge On The Trail

Senior Derek Roback (Waverly, Ohio) has switched his commitment from Toledo to Notre Dame after an official visit, ESPN affiliate Web site IrishSportsDaily.com reports.

"This place is even more amazing than I thought," Roback said in a text message. "I'm excited to get up here and get working. At this point right now, I think we're looking at an h-back type deal. Like (Ben) Guidugli at Cincinnati."

Cincinnati, Ball State, Bowling Green, Marshall, Miami-OH and Ohio, where his father Matt played quarterback, also offered.

Roback passed for 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior. He also rushed for four scores and caught two touchdown passes while playing receiver for three games due to a hand injury.

I like him as an H-back. Great out of the backfield. Tough. Strong. Fast. Can run and catch. What's not to like?

I certainly hope that he gets some defensive players we need them bad. Not 14 Qb's.

He is being recruited as an H-back.

Don't let yourself get too sad about 3 new commits.

Guys, please relax and try to remember that this is a transition year. Kelly is doing the best he can at this point, and frankly performing pretty well. Would we all like four 5 star players, sure we would. They'll come with winning. I think what he is doing is looking for kids that fit his system. Kids with 200% heart, kids who can be coached up.

100% agreed, for a transition year this has been great. Kelly has proven success with his players and once he proves this again at ND the 5 stars will start pouring in.

I'll stand behind Kelly's actions.

Here's to the future of ND football.

agree 100% it baffles my mind that folks think they know better about recruiting than the coaches who get paid to do it. Give me a break, can we AT LEAST have Kelly coach a freak'n game before we tar and feather him, or question his recruiting tactics. Can we at least SEE the results of his work before we decide if it was successfully or not. Some folks need to get a grip and let the man do his job w/o acting like drama queens on every decision the guy makes.

Amen guys...Im sick of some people around here expecting all the top recruits to fall into Kelly's lap. I believe the 5 stars will come with winning football games. Right now, I like to see all these kids that are signing that WANT to be at ND and want to turn the program around. Most of these recruits don't remember the glory days so im sure its hard for them to chose ND on its tradition. I give Kelly two thumbs up as of now with the recruits that he got to stay and the ones that have committed since he's been here.

We have a need for player and we have a need for bodies as much as some don't want to admit it. QBs, ATHs and TEs tend to be versatile in general. Kelly has shown himself to be adept at developing that type of player and blending them into his TEAM.

Only about 1/3 of recruits are impact player/early starters, 1/3 significant backups/eventual starters, 1/3 generally don't get that far whether it's Holtz, Weis, or Kelly. If anybody wishes to debate it - take it to another thread like "Recruiting '10 Status" or any of the Kelly threads on the board.

This is a Recruit's Profile, a recruit who just became apart of the ND family post accordingly. Show a little respect for him and his family as he's just made the biggest decision in his young life.

Future inappropriate posts in this thread or another Recruit's Profile will be deleted - once.

Repeat offenders will lose their posting privileges.

i believe that an h-back in his offense is more of a slot receiver as opposed a full time backfield guy.

i think this really shows kellys recruiting power and salesmanship, this kid was gonna be the Qb at toledo Right? and kelly convinced him to be an hback at ND!

obviously playing at ND plays a big role, but still convincing a guy that was gonna be the guy at toledo is a pretty good get.

cant wait to see some of these new kids in action.
