We aren't looking at him as a qb are we? Good size and speed, could play several places on D I would imagine.

Interesting. Wonder what positions Kelly told him he would get looks at? Very impressive academics by the way. He could have almost gotten into ND on his own.

Per Scout:

"Young player who is turning heads early in the process. Shows very good skills catching the ball and the ability to cover. Safety now but will see a move to linebacker in the future. Plays wide receiver but will be a quarterback as a junior and senior. Son of a coach who has an understanding of the game."

I'll take as many defenders as we can get in this class. We didn't take enough last year, and we don't want to end up in a situation like we did under Weis where we have very few upper classmen on D.

But if keep offering defensive players offenesive position isn't going to help...

He told ISD's Steve Wiltfong that he is being offered as a QB. I'm definitely perplexed. Kelly's a proven winner though, so I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt...

Kelly's jonesing for QBs/LBs. He's got a keen eye for the type.

jonesing? I would call it straight out, hardcore addiction at this point....LOL.

Makes me wonder if Massa isn't interested at this point which would disappoint b/c he might have been a package deal with Matt James. Not liking the end of this recruiting season, I see nothing good on the horizon.......

Kelly didn't contact Massa. According to Massa his HS coach made the contact yet Massa didn't express displeasure for his coach butting in.

Personally I found it difficult to accept that a coach who was involved with one of his player's recruitment and commitment would take it upon himself to contact another school out of the blue with two weeks left in the recruiting year. The HS coach may have been the back channel contact but he wasn't the instigator.

Back to Roback.

Let's take anymore Massa discussion over to Mass's thread.

Yeah, Massa is REALLY interested in ND, no doubt about that at all. Don't be surprised if he commits immediately after his visit.

Now, the more I read about Roback from the different ND sites (from people I trust), he will almost assuredly end up at a different position than QB. That puts my mind at ease on this, b/c he's one of those 'big skill' guys that Kelly loves to recruit, guys that can play multiple positions...

I feel like Kelly is honest with the kids in that they will get a shot at QB but if they aren't good enough they are welcome to play at whatever position they can get on the field quicker. It seemed that's how it worked with Jones who when he transferred was still looking at QB. He wasn't talented enough and decided to switch to LB where he would have been the starter last year were it not for injuries. I foresee 2 out of 4 (or 3 out of 5) of the "QBs" in this class to switch positions after everything is sorted out because they are the perfect "big skill" athletes that Kelly sees playing all over the field. The 5 possible "QBs" I see as possibly committing are Rees, Hendrix, Massa, Spond, and now Roback. Some are obviously more athletic than others but most appear to be at the minimum a little flexible in position depending on training.

Hey if they end up transferring too, it's not like we don't have extra scholarships this year and need to be stingy with them. Get whatever talent here you can and work it out later.

Could have almost gotten into ND on his own?

He got into Harvard on his academic creditentials.

Care to elaborate on what you've read? It obviously makes sense from a need perspective and taking into account Kelly's "big skill" comment re recruits, but does anybody know whether Roback played D this year, what position, etc?

If he is offering him as an athlete, im okay with it. A QB race between him and massa i would not like, because like others have said already, James is a good friend of Massa.

Hell of an athlete if those are actual combine or camp times, size, etc. I want football players at ND, and if kelly thinks he fits the mold, bring him in.......all in all.....i think we can beat out the MAC schools and pull this kid in.

Sorry about that. I wasn't trying to sound condescending. That is unbelievably awesome that he made it, sans athletics, into Harvard - I must have missed it somewhere.

FWIW over at DD a guy (dacoach) states he has a friend in the SID at ND and says Roback and Spond verbally committed and to expect announcements in the next couple days.
