I don't know if it has to do with size for the fact that his brother Paul was an All-American and only one inch taller and around the same weight. But I agree, when he signed I thought he would become a really good player. There is still time though.
David was the
lowest ranked Rivals LB, ND has taken since '08. He was a 3 Star, #34 LB, on the small side at 6-0, 205 considering who else ND has gotten in that span.
'08: Flier, Fleming, MacDonald, Poz
'09: Te'o, Mottta, Fox, Calabrese
'10: Moore, Shembo
'11: Grace
In his ND Class, Poz was the only 3 Star LB, the others were 4s. The next year Te'o came in with 4 Stars Motta and Fox, and 3 Calabrese. Last year Moore and Shembo came in as 4 Stars. Last Feb Grace came in as a 3 Star.
Poz was 34th in his LB class. Calabrese 25 in his and Grace 24 in his. Almost everybody else was in the Top Dozen with several Top 8 or higher.
Poz was undersized for the middle and not fleet for the outside. Like Calabrese pass coverage wasn't his forte. I don't recall him coming in with the "big hit" acclaim that Calabrese had in HS. I vaguely recall that Poz had some nagging injury issues, not major like an ACL more like hamstring, quad, or something of that nature. Didn't play as a freshman. Worked on Special Teams and got some PT as soph but Te'o and Calabrese were here by then. As a junior Poz was still on ST but PT dropped. As for ST if you're not a gunner or a kick blocker your name doesn't usually get called out.
David was approximately the same size as his famous brother entering college. David got on the field as PSU and made noise quickly. Starter by the end of the season, team captain as a junior. I suspect Weis and company took him assuming another late bloomer. So far it hasn't happened. I don't know the older brother's other measureables aside from a 4.6 40 similar to David's. David vertical leap was a lineman like 25 inches. OMM can still beat that. David's standing broad jump wasn't impressive either. Measureables don't guarantee success but his weren't impressive. Compare David's size and measureables to those other LB recruits above.
Now throw in the change to a 3-4. David may never have been cut out for a 4-3 OLB but with the 3-4 sealed it AND threw more competition into the MLBs from guys that couldn't bulk up like Kendall Moore did. I didn't bother showing the BIG recruits in the recent class that are in the ND OLB mix but weren't listed as LBs by Rivals in their respective recruiting classes.
