Blue Chip Chat: David Posluszny
Catching up with the area's top high school football players

Sunday, August 26, 2007
By Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

School: Hopewell

Position: RB/S/ILB

Height: 6-2

Weight: 215

The skinny:
The Posluszny surname is synonymous with tremendous athleticism, as David's older brothers Stan, who played baseball at West Virginia and Paul, who played linebacker at Penn State and now plays for the Buffalo Bills. David comes into this year as one of the most dynamic defensive players in the WPIAL. He will try to make up for lost time as he missed most of last season with a shoulder injury. He has since fully recovered. David has been a starter since his sophomore season.

College talk: Chose Notre Dame in April after considering scholarship offers from Pitt, West Virginia, Louisville, Wisconsin and Georgia Tech. Penn State did not offer him a scholarship. Posluszny said Penn State's coaches wanted to see him play this season before making a decision whether to offer.

Favorite food: My mom's chicken Parmesan.

Do you ever get tired of being associated with your brothers? It will never get old, because what they have accomplished is very special.

Person, living or dead, you would most like to meet and why: Pat Tillman, because he represents everything that I do.

So, really, what is Charlie Weis like? He is impressive. When you walk into his office, you can be a bit intimidated, but then as soon as you talk to him, you can tell how genuine he is.

What are your thoughts when you look up at Touchdown Jesus? I truly feel fortunate and humbled that I am going to be a part of something with as much tradition as Notre Dame football. I understand how many people in the world don't have the opportunity like the one I am going to have and I know I am obligated to make the most of it.

What is the strangest someone misspelled your name? It has probably been spelled 1,000 different ways and it has happened forever. I'm used to seeing it misspelled now.

People might be surprised to know ... That I like to read.

Poz is now the "sleeper" of the 08 LB class. With Fleming, McDonald, and Filer committed, Poz is slightly under the radar. I think he can be as good as any of them. Its nice to have an overload of talent on the way!

Hopewell 48, Carrick 14

Jared Rains rushed for 147 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 5, 45 and 7 yards to lead the Vikings to a convincing victory.

Mark Javens scored twice for Hopewell on runs of 33 and 15 yards.

David Posluszny also scored for the Vikings on a 26-yard run.

Carrick's Mike Szoszorck completed 11 of 22 passes for 195 yards and connected with James Jett on touchdown passes of 22 and 39 yards.

Jett caught 8 passes for 142 yards.

Via BGI:

David Posluszny (LB/RB): Posluszny is doing a great job adjusting to his position at linebacker. He has had success in the transition from safety, and has recorded two games of 10+ tackles. He is also a top running back on the team (over 300 yards rushing). He is steadfast in his stance that he is 100% committed to Notre Dame.

I really think that Poz will be a good LB. He has speed and is growing into a good sized player. Further, he has the bloodlines.

-------Yeah, but I think the 2nd Clausen bro transferred from LSU to UT. I think that Archie played at Ole Miss as well as his other bro. Cooper so Eli had ties there too

David has been hitting the weight room hard since his final game of the season. He has his weight up to 221 and CW said he would like David to be 228 when he reports this summer. Cw did an in home with him last week.

Sweet. I hope he's as good as his brother.

Least talked about player through his whole career. Hoping he comes back for a fifth year but who knows if he would still see the field. I think his size is limiting him. Sucks because I thought he would be a good player.

I don't know if it has to do with size for the fact that his brother Paul was an All-American and only one inch taller and around the same weight. But I agree, when he signed I thought he would become a really good player. There is still time though.

I really wasn't even sure that David was still here. I really haven't heard anything of him. I wish him the best, but I just don't think he fits our new system.

David was the lowest ranked Rivals LB, ND has taken since '08. He was a 3 Star, #34 LB, on the small side at 6-0, 205 considering who else ND has gotten in that span.

'08: Flier, Fleming, MacDonald, Poz
'09: Te'o, Mottta, Fox, Calabrese
'10: Moore, Shembo
'11: Grace

In his ND Class, Poz was the only 3 Star LB, the others were 4s. The next year Te'o came in with 4 Stars Motta and Fox, and 3 Calabrese. Last year Moore and Shembo came in as 4 Stars. Last Feb Grace came in as a 3 Star.

Poz was 34th in his LB class. Calabrese 25 in his and Grace 24 in his. Almost everybody else was in the Top Dozen with several Top 8 or higher.

Poz was undersized for the middle and not fleet for the outside. Like Calabrese pass coverage wasn't his forte. I don't recall him coming in with the "big hit" acclaim that Calabrese had in HS. I vaguely recall that Poz had some nagging injury issues, not major like an ACL more like hamstring, quad, or something of that nature. Didn't play as a freshman. Worked on Special Teams and got some PT as soph but Te'o and Calabrese were here by then. As a junior Poz was still on ST but PT dropped. As for ST if you're not a gunner or a kick blocker your name doesn't usually get called out.

David was approximately the same size as his famous brother entering college. David got on the field as PSU and made noise quickly. Starter by the end of the season, team captain as a junior. I suspect Weis and company took him assuming another late bloomer. So far it hasn't happened. I don't know the older brother's other measureables aside from a 4.6 40 similar to David's. David vertical leap was a lineman like 25 inches. OMM can still beat that. David's standing broad jump wasn't impressive either. Measureables don't guarantee success but his weren't impressive. Compare David's size and measureables to those other LB recruits above.

Now throw in the change to a 3-4. David may never have been cut out for a 4-3 OLB but with the 3-4 sealed it AND threw more competition into the MLBs from guys that couldn't bulk up like Kendall Moore did. I didn't bother showing the BIG recruits in the recent class that are in the ND OLB mix but weren't listed as LBs by Rivals in their respective recruiting classes.
