Since Omar's coach says his parents' ability to watch him play and weather are two factors he's considering, I hope someone also hands him the following info.
Since 2006 (Rivals), Florida recruited the following for DT:
2006
DT Antwine ****
DT C Hobbs ****
DT T Sanders ****
2007
DT J Brown ****
DT T Davis *****
2008 (verbals)
DT T Epps ***
DT B Jones ***
That's 1-5 star, 4-4 stars, 2-3 star DT's.
(reps to a GH member for doing that research.)
Troy Epps is a Jr College entry, so even though he may enter this year, he is older and more experienced in the college game. We all know stars mean nothing on the field; so the fact Omar is 4 stars doesn't mean he will jump ahead of older 3-stars. This year showed us experienced means more than stars on the field.
Also, their roster shows 15 lineman (5-DTs, 8-DEs, and 2 DLs) who will return next year, not including the two DTs and two DEs coming in 2008. In the 4-3 defense, it is not as difficult for someone to slide over from DE to DT.
Ian Williams got significant playing time as a freshman because of the lack of depth we had at that position. NT in the 3-4 defense is the kind of position where it is helpful to rotate a fresh guy in. In the 4-3 defense, the DT's aren't typically rotated in and out as much because they aren't facing as many double teams.
I hope someone close to Omar who cares about him gives him that info. If one of the factors is his parents watching him play, someone should tell him they may have to wait until his Junior season if he goes to Florida. So being closer to GA is irrelevant. I hope the warmer weather makes sitting on the bench for 2 years more comfortable. I don't say that at all to be mean. I'm just confused by the factors his coach explained were important to him. Weather for a few months out of the year for the next four years, yet this decision could impact the rest of his life. A few months of comfort for potentially a life of discomfort if he doesn't realize his dream.
