So what exactly is the situation here? Is he definitely coming to ND? And, does he have a Rivals or Scout profile yet? Any sense of whether he received any offers (or interest) from other major programs? Is he good enough to compete with Crist et al for playing time? In other words: royal blood aside, how big of a catch is he?

(Sorry for the barrage of questions.)

The last I heard it was expected that he would accept this invite to ND and be in the program, but I haven't heard anything concrete as of yet. I just went and checked boith Scout and Rivals and couldn't find a profile for him, but that doesn't really suprise me because I don't think he played organized football at Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman and earlier this summer when I checked their roster and stats from the 2006 season I was unable to find anything on him there as well.

I'm pretty sure he was getting interest from LaTech but I'm not sure if they've offered him, and I believe the other big time programs that want him aslo would give him preferred walk-on status rather than an official offer. If I had to guess I would think that he'll be a nice story and a very good scout team QB that may see limited action during his Sr. year. Now if ND was still in the Willingham era you never know but now that CW is here ND will seemingly always have a deep stable of quality QBs.

Thanks Goshen. I just did a quick Google search, and the WeAreSC forum had a couple of pages of discussion of him here and here - same story, basically: he played basketball through most of high school, and is going to be the backup QB at De La Salle this year. He would've been a walk-on there, too.

It's worth reading through those threads, though, for the sheer entertainment value of a bunch of SC fans salivating over having Joe on the sidelines, and of how much it would bug all of us to have a Montana at SC. Suckers.

P.S. I should add: if you want to avoid signing up to log in, you can get the cached versions of those pages here and here.

On Sportscenter on last Sunday, they had a video and Montana with his two sons. Both are a quite bit taller than Super Joe. They talked about the qualities they shared with their dad. It did not mention ND. Talked about his QB Coach, who he listens to more than his dad. Talked about growing up with your dad being the greatest QB ever.

Hmm Louisiana Tech.... Did they offer him? Interesting to see it put in there with ND, USuCk, and UCLA (I think that was the third). Sorry if it was already mentioned but I don't recall it.

I'm not sure if they have, but I know that it was at least a possibility. That's why they're on the list. The other schools want him as a walk-on.

A legacy kid like this SHOULD take a walk on... why take a scholly away from a middle class kid when your family can pay for school anyway?? Right?

Yea Acamp thats what I was thinking...did ND offer this because Joe can obviously afford college tuition and it would help the team by saving a schollie? Or is this more of a legacy/courtesy thing to have Montana's boy here at ND?

I would think it's the latter, but it doesn't sound like he's totoaly inept with reports like this, and like I've said before in this thread I do know that Joe has had him working with a really good QB coach for quite some time.

Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming reports the most impressive performer last weekend at the All-American Combine at the College of DuPage was junior quarterback Nathaniel Montana of De La Salle in Concord, Calif. -- the son of NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana.

Well, I could understand it if he wants to have a greater chance to see significant PT.

I believe this is the video you were talking about. I also added it to the first post of the profile.

What do you think the chances are we land this kid?! I would LOVE for a montana to get back into a uniform, and I think he might be good enough to give the other guys a run for their money.

as a walk on or with a scholarship. because im not entirely sure about using a scholarship on him. Would I like to have him? yes. but i think we are set at the quarterback position and that scholarship would be better served if used elsewhere.

I don't know, but if he comes as a walk-on I think it validates Golic as a bonafide center.

No he is an "invited walk on" which I am pretty sure means he is on the team but no scholorship

CIF, not sure if your post was an answer to mine. But I was joking about what Urban did at Fla. to get a Jr. college wr to commit. Supposedly Fla. offered his girlfriend a swimming scholie and then he de-commited from USC and commited to Fla.

No, I was just the posts before yours where they thought he might have been offered a scholorship

He didn't decommit, but from what I had heard he was all locked up but just hadn't publically commited yet. It was a gymnastics scholarship too, not a swimming one, but it's still all pretty pathetic anyway.

His Team De La Salle won the California 4A title yesterday (highest level)... They won 37-31. the game was 31-7 before they let it slip to 31-31. but then they finished off the game... Nate most likely did not play because he is the 3rd string QB.
