Nate has been offered Preferred Walk-On status by the Notre Dame football program. It is expected that Nate will accept this offer and if he does he will become a member of the 2008 ND recruiting class without taking up a schollie. All three of Nate's older sisters attended Notre Dame and it would be very surprising if Nate and his younger brother do not follow suit.

A preferred walk-on is a walk-on that's invited to be on the team as opposed to one that's forced to try out. In other words if Nate decides to attend Notre Dame he will pay his own tuition but will be on the Football roster without having to try out for the team.

Before you even ask... Yes, it's his son.

Chicago Sun - Times Prep insider

Joe's son

Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming reports the most impressive performer last weekend at the All-American Combine at the College of DuPage was junior quarterback Nathaniel Montana of De La Salle in Concord, Calif. -- the son of NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana.

I've heard Joe mention that he had to get Nathan a QB coach, because Nathan wouldn't listen to Dad (Joe). LOL, how funny is that? :smilewink

In the rich-get-richer category, prep football powerhouse Concord De La Salle High School has Nicholas and Nathaniel Montana enrolling this fall. They're the sons of Hall of Famer Joe Montana and transfers from Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman.

It's been two years since De La Salle's national record 151-game winning streak was snapped by Bellevue, Wash. Even with a Montana at QB - Nicholas is one - De La Salle won't climb those heights again.

Sorry I couldn't find more info on him as of right now. Scout and Rivals don't have a profile for him as of yet, and I checked both Santa Rosa Cardinal Newman's, and Concord De La Salle's rosters and couldn't find either of the Montana boys, but I was able to find out that Nathan made the Honor Roll all three tri-mesters this past year, and Joe was a volunteer QB coach for Cardinal Newman this past year.

Yes, one would think so. Unless Nathan is one of those very independent people that wants to take their own path life, completely seperate from any parents or siblings.

Does this sort of give un an advantage?

No clue. Probably depends on his desire to put up w/ the endless comparison to his dad & the enormous shadow his dad casts. Yes, he'll get that regardless of where he plays, but even more at ND.

Remember Peyton Manning was thought to be a lock at Ole Miss & I remember when Dick Butkus' kid chose a California university over his dad's alma mater, Illinios,so that he could carve his own niche (which he never did BTW).

true, but neither archie manning nor dick butkus were the greatest football players of all time. Joe is.

This would be like one of OJ simpsons kids not going to USC. Oh wait, oj's kids hate him because he kills people.

Guess who's going to DLS

Two years after its national-record 151-game winning streak ended, De La Salle High School has officially become home to football royalty.

Nathaniel and Nicholas Montana, the sons of immortal 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, have been admitted to the Concord school for the 2006-07 school year.

Joe Montana, his wife, Jennifer, and their four children (their two daughters attend Notre Dame, where he launched his football career) have lived in Calistoga in recent years, where Joe dabbled in winemaking and cutting-horse competitions. The family now reportedly is looking to buy a home in Contra Costa County so Joe can be closer to his business interests in the Bay Area.

"It makes sense to me," said De La Salle defensive coordinator Terry Eidson.

"They went to Cardinal Newman, a Catholic school, and now they're moving here, and we're the only Catholic school in the area."

Montana's oldest son, Nathaniel, 16, played junior varsity football and basketball at Cardinal Newman High in Santa Rosa last year but may play only basketball for the Spartans. He will be a junior this season.

Nicholas, 14, is expected to play basketball and football at De La Salle.

Both Montana boys play quarterback, as did their Hall of Fame father.

"They are just a great family," Pat Fitzgerald, basketball coach at Cardinal Newman, said of the Montanas. "He just wants to be like any of the other dads and support his sons. He's pretty mellow and doesn't want attention."

This is not the first child of a Hall of Fame athlete to attend De La Salle. NBA players Jon and Brent Barry, sons of former Warriors great Rick Barry, attended the school in the late 1980s..

"I understand their dad's name, but we're going to be teaching and coaching his sons, and it's important they have their own identity," Eidson said.

So what exactly is the situation here? Is he definitely coming to ND? And, does he have a Rivals or Scout profile yet? Any sense of whether he received any offers (or interest) from other major programs? Is he good enough to compete with Crist et al for playing time? In other words: royal blood aside, how big of a catch is he?

(Sorry for the barrage of questions.)
