Pay for play is a HUGE problem right now, as is early sport specialization. AAU and the like are the driving force totally decimating whats going on.

There could be a lot of variables at play... none of which are probably any good. You often see a surge in popularity of a sport when good things are happening (Winning the Hex and good play in the WC) and then it levels out when it isn't fresh in everyone's minds. could be a possible reason.

If you go back four years, I'd have said we could compete with anyone. We were in the group of death where we beat Ghana (who seemed to have our number), should have beaten Portugal, but had a draw, and we were SO close to a draw with the eventual winners in Germany. Then in the knockout...

I may have been in the minority, but I did not want Arena. I have only been following soccer closely for the last 8ish years, so I don't remember the Arena years. However, reading up on the teams he coached, and his tactics, favoritism, etc. plus reading what critics said when he was appointed...

The USMNT didn't deserve to make it to the WC... But I like to think we, the fans, deserved it. Soccer is growing. Development is getting better. Tough pill to swallow for all of us who are fans.

Gabriel has left Arsenal to join Valencia on a 5 year deal. Not the best CB for Arsenal, but he was playing better last year, did well to fill in at RB when Hector was out. He is a hustler and certainly would fill in well in the 3 man back Wenger is employing. Don't know how letting him go...

Wow, that's some interesting teams making it far. I would love to see more teams from lower leagues have access while maybe limiting the bigger leagues in all honesty. But the bold is where you hit it, money. Sad.

Agreed. They can already show up to 4 games at once on cable. No need to do this other than they can.

Meanwhile I pick Arsenal... ARSENAL. I must be a Notre Dame fan to do that as I got into it. (Some will say Liverpool fits more, but Bah!)

5th and Wenger out could mean losing Ozil and Sanchez. I know Ozil is a polarizing player, but he IMO needs to stay for Arsenal to compete in the near future. On the other hand, 4th and Wenger in just means the same old Arsenal, even if both stay. Not a good situation.

I mean... in the first 15 matches, Arsenal only dropped 7 points, which isn't bad considering the result of the first match (3-4 to Liverpool, but was 4-1 at one point). The problem really was the middle of the season. Dropping 23 out of a possible 45 points. THAT's where it always goes downhill.
