I think you have to look at this as a multi-year play (and I’d guess we always were, given the reports that some teams worried he might never play again). In which case, OK. Do the surgery and be ready by spring to ball out next year. We’ll be fine.

I would assume $2 million was an annual number.

But it is the premium you pay for theoretically multi years of control. Just like out of HS. So no I don’t think it was $2 over 2 or something.

Mike Frank taking victory laps on ISD, saying the other people were reporting he’d be back.

So we’ll see how accurate ISD is long term. Seems they just take the worst case scenario and run with it.

I can't wrap my head around how this information isn't known before he signs? Also, I would think a high level athlete would want a surgery as soon as possible if they aren't trending towards being 100% without it.
He had surgery earlier in the year.

There was issues with it healing, so they opted to do a clean-up procedure and see if that did the trick. Looks like it didn't, so now they're going back in.

Sounds like they were banking on the injury healing as expected, but he's had setbacks, similar to Jagusah.

I would say: buck up.

This isn't the first time a football team has invested $2 million in a player who hasn't worked out, and it won't be the last. Football is a violent sport conducted largely in the fog of war. Sometimes you spend $2 million and get an All-American. Sometimes you spend $2 million and get 14 catches and a very expensive lesson about hamstrings.

That's the business we've chosen.

Getting a former 5-star Ohio State WR who appeared ready to come into his own was a perfectly reasonable swing. You don't stop taking those swings because one of them might miss. This isn't an index fund. There is no low-fee diversified portfolio of 6'2" receivers with 4.4 speed returning a dependable 7% annually.

And, importantly, the investment hasn't matured yet. There's still plenty of football left for him to make an impact at Notre Dame. So buck up. We put $2 million into a highly volatile wide-receiver security. Past performance was not indicative of future results. Principal may be lost. Please consult your offensive coordinator before investing.

It sucks but it basically puts everything on Mylan Graham now. It was always IMO a get starter caliber production out of either will work move. Especially with Gilbert playing the way he is currently.

Mylan Graham - figure it out.

$2 million is the number from January

Boundary starting portal WR numbers were $1+. Marsh was north of 2
I had to go read that back, I remembered posting $2.3M for Marsh. I never got a straight answer on Porter, but if you were correct about that $2M that's kinda batshit for a guy with very limited film and being hurt.

It's also fun going and reading back the posts from the spring where the discussion was basically "idk reliable people behind the scenes are saying his knee might be pretty fucked up" and then people being like "but why would we bring in someone whose knee is fucked up"... and yeah, maybe the explanation is this is all just a big lessons learned situation about where/how you allocate resources in the portal but hard to argue with other results.

Brice said that a lot of players who transferred out after last year had to take big pay cuts to come back. If things keep going the way they're going, I wouldn't be surprised if Porter, Graham, and Greathouse are asked to take pay cuts.
Well based on their collective production so far I’d have to say a pay cut was in order. They’re getting their shooting paid for right now which has been worth more than they have shown. I expect more from Graham and Greathouse. Both had chances to make great catches on well thrown balls and failed.

Agreed. Use their money to get actual production. I'd add Jagusah to this list as well, but he might not be making a whole lot given all of his injuries.

When seems clear the staff was working to get him back this year due to the Sept “minor procedure to speed up healing” that obviously didn’t work.

So we’ll see how accurate ISD is long term. Seems they just take the worst case scenario and run with it.

Frank doubted Tae is back by Miami and has always held Jagusah won’t play in 2026 so we’ll see.
Has Jagusah been getting paid to slowly recuperate from his self inflicted injuries?

Yeah, it's one thing I am really not a fan of about Mike.

ISD is notoriously noncommittal to injury news and updates, which is fine. If your intel is vague or questionable, you do you. No sense in reporting what you're not confident in.

But doing a victory lap because you did the bare minimum is something that always irks me about Mike. They take the most noncommittal position and are intentionally vague for weeks and then when it comes out, Mike is like "Look, we tried to tell you guys *so and so*."

So he was a junk bond?

The football commentariat loves to self-congratulate. It's one of the worst parts of the sport.

I'll cut them some slack, because it's usually just Mike. The rest are pretty mum about it.

But it's also Mike's site, so...

I'm pretty sure ISD said during his recruitment that ND wasn't given his medical info and weren't aware until after he signed. If that's true, that leads me to believe they were scrambling after missing out on other targets at WR and needed someone. Also, would be a really bad look if they just signed someone without having their medical info.

Let’s hope this isn’t another Jagusah situation where he’s going 2 years without playing

Can someone fill me in on the ISD bashing? I listen to them pretty religiously, and from what I’ve gathered, they (as a whole) don’t normally comment on injury news because Freeman is notoriously tight-lipped about that stuff. ISD is also not really a click-baity site. They’ll sit on news or be vague about it if they don’t have clearance to make it public. That’s been their MO for as long as I’ve known Mike and Jamie.

Take today, for example. You had reporters recently headlining that Porter was close. Boom, post it. It gets clicks. But Mike and Jamie basically said, “Close to what? Practicing with the team? Doing individual work isn’t practicing with the team, so how can we consider him close to seeing the field?” That seems like a pretty reasonable take. Am I missing something?

ISD also has legit recruiting contacts, and Christian has been a known commodity for years.

Jamie has been applauded for his film reviews.

Mike...is Mike. But one thing I’ve always respected about him is that he’s consistent. He’s an old-school guy who loves smash-mouth football. He’s a fan just like the rest of us and wants to see ND succeed. Some of his biggest complaints are about topics that have been talked about on this site ad nauseam. He’s quite literally “one of us.” I’m not sure why there’s beef with the guy who puts the fan in fanatic.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but of all the media talking heads, ISD seems to hit more than they miss.

ND will be fine this year without him they are lucky Gilbert is blowing up. There’s also 4-5 hungry underclassmen who have tons of potential. I don’t blame Graham at all either Carr needs to spread the ball out more. Same with Greathouse. Carr tends to feed the hot hand.
Maybe, I don't know, but maybe both haven't earned Carr's trust.

I expect that there absolutely are many players that are signing multi-year deals.
That's not the question I was answering or the one you asked. There are no contracts which force players to stay at a school.

I also wonder how Marsh is feeling right now. His QB isn't half of CJ's quality - bet he imagined stats would look a little bit more impressive than this so far, and against the worst part of their schedule. But he's getting paid, so I'm sure he's fine with his decisionView attachment 3064978
Solid #s for the 2nd option, thought the hype was way too much for Marsh.

The guys injury is more serious than what was being led on and apparently why O$U didn't seem to be worried about it from a staff POV. He's got quite the road to recovery but at least he has plenty of time to get to 100%. I think any more setbacks/procedures after this year would be prolonging the inevitable (those rumblings about him never playing were there for a reason).

I still think he was worth the risk with our WR depth. we have a bunch of dependable young WRs and need a game changer, not a Ben Skrowneck. He’s also still gonna have 3 years left to figure it out. And if he can’t get healthy he’ll prob be gone after next.

The question was: is he contractually obligated to play at ND for the 2027 season? The question was not: will he be at ND no matter what for the 2027 season?

There are no contracts that force anyone to do anything. Obviously contracts can be broken--for a penalty. Specific performance is almost never a remedy for a breach. You do not need to educate me on contract law. I'm a practicing attorney.

All I want to know is if he is under contract for 2027.

Agreed, if he comes back and lights it up in the next year or two it will be completely worth it.

And its not like we substituted another position in the transfer portal to get Graham/Porter. We got the guys we wanted on the DLine and Secondary. We didn't plan on taking an RB, QB, or Lineman. Really we have to compare the choice to get Graham/Porter with the other receiver/TE options. I'm not sure we get a better deal for the price, factoring in the eligibility those guys have ahead of them.
