In 2027? I don’t think Monds’ availability would impact that anyways. A re-classified true freshman starting for an erstwhile playoff team would more than likely be a disaster, even if he is incredibly talented. The choice was always Grubbs/Jarrard vs. Transfer, imo.

If that's true, than you might as well pay CJ $7 million. Surely paying an extra million for someone already familiar with the playbook and familiar with current players would be chump change.

I imagine the scenario of CJ not coming back is not a decision $1, 2 or 3 million changes

If we’re going to bring in a transfer it needs to be someone who is proven and can help us compete for a title. Otherwise we might as well see what we got with the 3 guys on the roster. with current schedule surely one of them can deliver a 10-2 or better record and playoff birth.

Yep, especially given next season's schedule, a playoff berth should be very achievable even without an elite QB.

I think the real question becomes whether we think we have a legit title shot (as we do this year), which probably hinges on how our offensive skill players develop, and how much of the defense returns. The latter, in particular, won't be cheap. But if you invest in the defensive starters, you probably then have to double down and spend on a QB who is good enough to be the difference in January. That will be even less cheap.

They honestly might be pretty lean on roster spend if things go to plan, who are you returning that is really breaking the bank with current NFL projections?

Young, Lambert, Black, Graham, Faison/Greathouse, Porter, Brewu, Dunham, Tionne Gray….? Other good players elsewhere and HS spending is high but premium position wise that’s about it. They could easily go for it QB portal wise if they wanted to. A lot “off the books”

I doubt you could get a top tier QB for $7 million next year. Mensah got 10. Next year’s Miami QB will probably get 12.

I'm not saying it necessarily makes sense in all cases, but I think they could pay enough to pose interesting questions for Traore, KVA, Tae. Depending how the season goes for those guys and their draft projections. And under the new five-year rules do Bowen, Ausberry and Shuler have another year? They maybe ready to move on, but they also play positions the NFL doesn't love.

I get some “done with CFB” vibes from a few there but I mainly excluded those names since linebacker and safety aren’t big ticket spends either way. Retaining any of the linebackers or safeties should be easy from a financial perspective

Yeah, all those guys except KVA will have played a LOT of college football by the time this season is through. Shuler and Bowen have started every game for two-plus seasons now (except one first-half Shuler missed for targeting). They may feel like they've done what they can do in college ball. Which, fair. But I wouldn't mind having them back.

Traore, in particular, is an interesting question. If he climbs into the first round, he should go. But what if he's projected to the 3rd? Of course, what you pay him, you can't pay someone else who might have even more upside.

Yup, with his reported buyout being near his $4 million contracted amount with Duke. So all in, a school is paying $10 mil or so plus incentives to get a top tier qb. That's what I was referencing.
