That was a weird story. It went right to the prospect of kicking him off the team, but sheds very little light on what the "concerns" actually are. (Like, is he homesick and maybe not fully participating in spring practice? Or is he committing felonies?)

I remember reading this in April and thinking he had a target on him—whether from people back home or people around campus (I mean, he probably showed up to Knoxville day 1 as the highest paid player on the team and it’s public knowledge).
Can definitely see where that could go sideways in a hurry.

Supposedly all goes back to Chaz getting a pretty severe concussion at the tail end of last year's season. Supposedly been dealing with lots of lingering issues related to the concussion including vertigo.

I’m not sure, well I I am sure, where he got that from. At zero point all off season did Missouri expect him to start. Maybe two sources for confirmation needed….

I think the staff gave him a pay cut this year.
Loved the player, but if I remember correctly, the dad was also a social media presence that might've become a distraction.

That was the word, yeah.
The "pay cut" thing is tough. Happened with a few guys in this class. I guess a side effect of paying kids coming out of high school is that, if they don't turn out as good as you'd hope, they get less money their sophomore year. But probably some other school will see four-star/Notre Dame recruit and offer them more to transfer.
It's not good for development, but kind of is where we're at in this sport right now.

I'm not on top of this important economic stuff. Is there any limit on what a team can spend on players? Both individually and collective? In the old vernacular: are there any salary caps? Can the sum of what the school pays plus what some "outside organization" pays be any number? ---- I know that my ignorance of this contains errors in assumptions in the questions, just trying to get educated.

Yes, there are two different avenues for a player to get paid. One is the NCAA approved amount of ~$22 million per school for ALL their sports at the major college level. The second is the NIL portion - all paid from outside of the University. Supposedly there is a clearinghouse that all NIL payments are supposed to go through that guarantees the student athlete is actually providing some sort of service in order to earn this money. That clearinghouse is a farce.

So, theoretically, the total salary potential of any roster is limited by an NCAA cap, but unlimited by outside availability?
And, maybe, any "salary cut" that a player might be told they were taking would only be of "psychological" impact IF the outside sources made up the cut difference?

Yes that is how I understand it. Hence our "$40 million roster" despite the $22 million cap.
And while there are both internal and external pools, I would think the program and its major collectives/donors would coordinate on this stuff. Unlike, say, CJ Carr, Blair's not a big enough name that he's likely to negotiate much NIL on his own; he's getting paid through the main channels.
And all this stuff is year-to-year. If he got offered a big number to come out of high school, but after a season of watching him the program decides he is unlikely to crack the two-deep, they'll redeploy some of his money to someone else (be it the next high school recruit, retaining a better existing player, or bringing someone in through the portal). In most cases I doubt outside sources would make up the difference.
We, at least, are unlikely to process him out entirely. He'd still have a spot on the team and a scholarship and all that comes with, as well as probably some NIL money. A wise man (Aeneyas Williams?) might take that deal and play the long game. Others will take a better offer today and go elsewhere. To each his own, I guess.
