I tend to think there is a deep WR threat on our roster, but agree we didn't see one on Sunday. And Gilbert is fine but he is no Malachi Fields. At best he's a Beaux Collins.
Without that kind of speed or size, our WR corps will be a limiting factor against better teams. But, again, I'll prefer to believe it exists on our team and simply needs a little more time to cook over the next few weeks. I also wonder if we will be more willing sacrifice blocking skill (a must-have for WRs in prior years) to get some of the younger talent onto the field.

The problem with this is everyone is assuming Porter is some dominant proven player. The truth is we have no idea
Not really assuming that. But there is a really large space he could live in between dominant proven player and what we saw out of 2 of the 3 WR positions on Sunday. "He's doing pretty good out there" would be a nice thing to be able say.

At this point "oh look he can run like a normal football player again" would be a nice thing to be able to say about Porter. Not sure we can count on much there for this season.

Dont think anyone disagrees with that. The hope is that once he does he's able get open and/or catch footballs. I realize that's asking a lot though from a wide receiver.

Yea I wasn’t even assuming that.. That’s why my thesis is simply we’d need him to be that..

My pendulum is clearly swinging too far at the moment as it’s very early in the season & the room is deep but I can’t help but think ahead.

What's interesting to me is that Gilbert actually looked pretty smooth and fast in limited opportunities last weekend. No one is going to confuse him with DeSean Jackson or Will Fuller but he's definitely going to get open and I can see him being a big play guy. He moves better than either Collins or Fields, IMO. What he doesn't have -- per reports and all evidence -- is Fields size, hands, and contested catch ability. The fact that he got the same snap share as Faison I think says a lot though about his perceived ability / upside.

Gilbert is going to be good he just needs reps. Graham woulda had 50 plus yards if it wasn't for dumb penalties or bad calls. I think Frazier is going to be your deep threat hopefully they get him a few plays to get his feet wet this weekend.

Would have to see the All 22 but multiple times Gilbert was in the slot which means someone else was flexed out to the boundary, one of them we saw was Flanagan in the Faison highlight. Interested how that develops

Gilbert to me is kind of a “big slot” type more than a true boundary. Has good rapport with Carr and seems to find space well.

EDIT: per PFF 5 total TE snaps taken out wide

Not to hijack Porter's thread, but I suspect a lot of the WR negativity is going to be forgotten after a run of much easier secondaries. If Wisconsin came mid way through the year and the same stats were put up, I don't think anyone is expressing this level of concern.
I was born around the time Parseghian left and I've never seen an ND roster so stacked, but it's overwhelmingly obvious WR is the relatively weak link in that otherwise loaded team. It's the group that's going to decide whether we win a championship or not, and I believe the focus and concern here are warranted.

Explosive Pass Plays (2025) vs Wisconsin:

Indiana: 3
Washington: 0
Ohio State: 4
Oregon: 3
Alabama: 6
Notre Dame: 1

per Game on Paper

As usual seems like a fair analysis is somewhere in the middle. Wisconsin definitely limits explosive pass plays. They just do aside from the Alabama game. ND also could stand to open it up more. Both true.

sometimes a RB was aligned outside. This can help indicate man/zone coverage

A 1 game sample size where the offense played poorly for a half against probably the second or third best secondary on the schedule does not warrant the level of concern we are seeing. CJ Carr was a few inches off from having Faison go for 5 catches and 141 yards and a touchdown (and that was Carr's fault, not Faison's). Does that one play make everything peachy on the WR room? I bet there's a lot more silence, though my view on the room would be pretty much unchanged- there's a lot of good players but not one truly great player. People want a dawg like Golden Tate, Michael Floyd, Will Fuller, or even Chase Claypool. But what they might have is multiple TJ Jones. Let's wait and see what they do against these weaker secondaries coming up allowing them to show out and gel.

I would assume the ND medical staff checks out these potential transfers for injuries?
Apparently Porter and his team were very restrictive on his medicals when he was in the portal. Report is that the ND staff understood the risk and was willing to take it.

Nobody said anything about one game sample. Some of us pay attention and have far more data. Simple fact is, it's rare to win a championship without an elite presence or two at WR, and some of our more realistic posters are realistic about that.

I don’t have a problem with the critique or Faison as WR1 a generally fair point. Where Bud (and Danny) go off the rails as typical FSU haters is the idea that after a 28 point win he’s upgrading Wisconsin in his power rating and downgrading ND. Tom rightfully rips him apart for a compete lack of logic there. All the post game win expectancy metrics show ND basically won by the margin deserved. He also waived a magic wand away on Oregon’s struggle for example by citing those same post game win expectancy numbers.

Bud is a troll though so he knows what he’s doing to get engagement

Bud says Notre Dame doesn’t have any good receivers because “they would be the third best receiver on Oregon, Texas, and IU”.

Oregon, Texas, and IU’s QB would be 2nd best at Notre Dame, so I guess it evens out.
Maybe, but I'd gladly take their top 2-3 WR's over ND's. It's still fair to question whether ND has the WR and RB to win a Natty. As good as Carr is, it might not be enough if the skill talent around him isn't anything special. I personally think they needed 2 proven WR's and a RB from the portal, but we'll see.

I would also venture to guess most of the national audience did not watch the 2H is a TON of what is happening given how much the Louisville - Ole Miss game picked up in the 3Q

After watching many years of ND football, I always find it takes a couple of cupcake games to get the offense into a rhythm. Once in rhythm, it seems the O is ready to roll.

Wisconsin has a pretty good D and we weren’t able to get into a rhythm as we should against Rice.

Michigan won the Natty with Roman Wilson as WR1.
