To be fair, our 2012 DL was massive too (Nix, Tuitt, Lewis-Moore). I don't think size was necessarily the problem in that game. You're spot on with the "out-athleted" piece.

It was everywhere else. Not upfront. Plus we ran a 3 man front. We weren’t very big outside of Manti in the second level.
Couple all of that with the fact that Alabama knew everything our very vanilla defense was doing pre snap and yeah.

I think we're getting into the weeds here. This thread is about a DT on our current roster. Someone said he's massive and mentioned how far we've come in that regard since the 2013 title game. ND's S&C program was really bad back then, and I think the more likely explanation for the result of that game was that Bama just outmuscled, outworked, out-scouted, and outcoached (and out-supplemented?) us.

.... amazing to me how the actual history of that game has devolved into baloney. The Alabama Center TOLD everyone after the game why they dominated the play offensively. It was not size nor strength. It was the complete predictability of Diaco's Clockwork defense. Jones had this exact quote: "They're good because they're simple. ... But they're simple." Unlike opponents in regular season, rushing to prep up for us in a few days, Saban had weeks to prepare for every foot placement. Jones said that they knew exactly where every player would be before the huddle broke. The only outrageously big offensive player was DJ Fluker. Lou Nix thought he physically dominated Barton Jones but that didn't make any difference. Lou never figured out that all Jones had to do was to get into a certain position from where they knew Lou would be, and wall him off for just a count or two.

It was the two deep - our drop off after these guys was terrible. Big boys like this can't run 100% for 60-80 snaps.

As for Brewu - models his game after Aaron Donald who played at 6-1 280. Can't wait to see him playing for the good guys. To my point above - he could see better production with fewer snaps in a stud rotation. Unleash the beast!

I forgot about those post-game comments from Barrett Jones... Talk about salt in the wound. However, you're oversimplifying things and making it all about Bama's scouting. I think there were several other factors involved as I stated above. And top of all that, I didn't even mention the distraction factor (Manti's non-existent GF and BK interviewing with the Eagles). At the end of the day, Bama was more talented than us and kicked us in the teeth on both sides of the ball.

I honestly think this addition is underrated nationally. I think the ND beat is excited about him but nationally we hear about Ibirogba as the #1 transfer DT and then ND got the Oregon transfer Gray. Brewu added as a bit of an afterthought at times, compare that to the shine Rasheem Biles gets at Texas.
Brewu in two years at Pitt: 736 snaps, 31 pressures, 4 sacks, 26 run stops
Ibirogba in two seasons at WF: 418 snaps, 26 pressures, 3 sacks, 13 stops.
He’s older (transfer form GTown) with less production. He wasn’t even top 2 in snaps at Wake Forest in the interior. Not saying Ibirogba is a bust as we pursued him heavily, but Brewu could easily have been touted with that #1 next to him

Teams are going to have to try to run on us. Brewu will ROLL when they try to pass. Whether he's AA or not will depend upon how he holds his area when the OLines crash on him. If he can contain his opponent, then our LBs will clean up. Ash's philosophy will either help him or not (schematic views on penetration vs paralleling LOS.) ... my pretty ignorant opinion. I'm VERY high on Brewu.

yep. That's why I thought we got the best available DT.
At first glance (and without actually looking into the details), that stat comparison looks to me like Ibi got more situational snaps for more passing stats while Brewu does more things across more snaps. Overall, similar production rates, Brewu just spreads his stats across more evenly across categories.
I hope my armchair analysis is correct. Guys without situational needs/limitations always get the nod from me unless a dude is a true outlier/wrecker in defined situations. Brewu as the allrounder is, IMO, a better fit with the other dudes ND will be rolling out around him. The potential on this line is stunning.
Carr, Knapp, Moore, Shuler, Johnson, Traore, Faison, KVA, Bowen… Yeah he could be #10.
I’d still say Porath because last year was inexcusable.
