The simple question is whether he is better than Hebert or 2 true freshman as a potential backup QB.
You don't have to like him as long as he makes the team better. I would take Tim Tebow if he was willing to sit on the bench.

Probably not better than the two freshman, but think id have a little more confidence in TB if Carr got hurt early in the season than the others.

He has head issues and it’s simply he went to ND, as he committed to. Then his HC and OC left so he followed said OC. OC left again so he went back to ND.

Hardly a head case of decisions by today’s standards of the portal.

ND can have over 105 players, he wouldn’t be taking anyone’s precious spot.
Add to this he also got paid *a lot of money* to transfer to Bama while ND simultaneously spent money on a transfer to come in and start over him. While his former OC promised him we would start.

probably already said, but if he doesn't shove some really useful depth player out, I'd like to have Buchner as a seriously dangerous fake field goal holder. He might be as dangerous as anybody around at that.

Again, all our backup quarterbacks have taken a combined zero snaps in college football. If Carr gets hurt in the Wisconsin game, what, exactly, is the plan there?

So yeah. Having a guy who has started games for Notre Dame and Alabama, and is willing to sit on the bench just to help the team if needed in a pinch, is an incredible luxury. Of course you keep him, if he wants to come back. It costs us nothing, and may well be the difference between winning and losing games if Carr goes down at some point.

No kidding. The hate of this kid is crazy. By all accounts he is a great kid and a great representative for our fine institution.
It's ridiculous but I think a lot of these posters are just trolls of an idiocracy looking for shock effect. People claim to be fans but bash this school and it's representatives more than any other is beyond me.

I think those of you on the Buchner train are delusional...blinded by his 5 star status as a HS recruit...he was awful as a QB at ND and Bama...its over...

Sure keep him on the roster...but backup QB? What has he done to deserve that? Nothing...

He did help ND win the Gator bowl back in Dec of 2022, was MVP, with 3 TD passes, and 2 TD runs. He did have 3 INTs also. I'm fine with him as backup.

If he comes back, I guarantee he orchestrates at least one spectacular fake punt/fg.

His lacrosse/qb acumen is practically begging for Free to draw up something wild to change a game and go down in lore. I cant wait...
