Wasn't a fan when they hired Shrewsbury, and im still not a fan.

He runs an nba style offense without nba talent, atleast Brey ran a college style offense (until he got lazy or whatever the hell happened to him).

It time to move on from Shrews.

I wasn't a fan of the hire myself but unfortunately the administration seems ok with mediocrity and a coach who has Bob Knight tendencies.

Also, there is nobody out there in their right mind who would want to come to his dumpster fire.

Scroll to the right on that box score and you'll see why Jalen and Towt didn't play more.
Yes I saw 4 fouls each, I still think you've still got to let them play.

I am as frustrated as everyone else is about the basketball program.

I don't think getting rid of a coach, getting a new coach & banking on the team to transfer with the coach is the solution; there is no guarantee the kids will transfer.

When Shrewsberry got hired there were only 5 scholarship kids that remained on the team.

I think Burton has been consistent in his ND career and this is his first year he's had talent surrounded around him, but he is hurt.

What exactly about Micah Shrewsberry’s coaching and player development have you been encouraged by?

Burton has gotten better & better each year.

Shrews has developed into a great recruiter. Depending at what recruiting site you visit ND basketball has never had a top 5 or 10 recruiting class.

I am not calling Shrews perfect and I thought there would be a greater turnaround this season, but at least he is giving freshman PT.

No way. He has been a very good to great player all 3 years that really hasn’t grown his game at all. That’s not really a knock on Shrews as he may already be at his peak, and when he has to do too much (which is often with this team and Shrews style of ball), he turns it over far too frequently.

I gave Shrews a pass the first two years but this year shouldn’t be going how it is even with Burton injured. Unless ND has a 10 point lead with 5 minutes left, I have zero faith they can hold on with how poor of an in-game coach he is. It’s embarrassing that they can’t even inbound a ball half the time in crunch time. They’re still young and Shrews is a good recruiter, but it’s his fault they’re still the young. His refusal to use the portal is befuddling. Towt is great for what he is. Imagine he brought in another guard and a forward of similar quality?

My guess is he gets a 4th year but he really needs to retain some of the core talent while also leaning into the portal more. I’m not convinced it’s better to have Burton on his big deal than it is to let him walk and get a few plug and play pieces in the portal.

Yes way. Burton has gotten better each year while at Notre Dame. He ranks 2nd for freshman for points per game. Stat's don't lie- Shrewsberry wanted to take more off of his shoulders his sophomore season and his points per game went up from his freshman year. I'd like to see more assist's, but they've been consistent. His field goal & free throw % has improved year by year. Burton has been a bright spot for Shrewsberry:

I am not fully sticking up for Coach Shrews and I agree that we should be seeing better in-game coaching results. I think with the hire of Garrity at GM- he gets the Notre Dame basketball program vs. a GM who didn't play at ND. Would you rather he go after a top 5 recruiting class or 1 year rentals? I think Towt has been his best portal pickup- great rebounder. Another guard in the portal?? Sure if we knew Burton would get hurt, Iams is in year 3 & Certa is in year 2 and one of those 2 should be able to dribble a damn basketball and play the guard position. I think Certa is better of the 2.

I think he also gets brought back for year 4 with Burton- letting him go to the portal for a few plug and play dudes makes no sense?? I hope this year's freshman class isn't a flop like the 2018 class.

This year has been frustrating and one thing that doesn't make sense is Shrews takes Haralson out at the 14 minute mark and brings him back in at the 8 min. mark.

Here's to hoping this program is brought some luck.

So you have to ask yourself the question how Burton would perform with Shrews or any Joe Schmo as coach his freshman year. Given the lack of development we’ve seen from pretty much anyone on the team, it’s pretty clear Burton would have performed this way regardless of who was coaching him. If you think Shrews is responsible, then we will have to agree to disagree.

The reason to not retain Burton is because they pay him far too much and ND basketball doesn’t live in the same world as ND football. And why would they? Shrews has shown nothing to excite donors to throw an extra $5MM at basketball.

That sucks. Very underwhelming career but was at his most useful this season coming off the bench. Had a nice spark early.

If you have to make a TV commercial for the Notre Dame men's basketball team in order to get butts in the seats, it's probably a sign you should fire the head coach.
Bumping this comment again. No wonder they have to make commercials. I'd rather watch college for the deaf and blind play basketball than watch this pathetic team.

Watching Illinois (16-3) playing a bit. Names keep being mentioned. "Stoyakovic" "Ivisic" "Petrovic" "Ivisic 2" "Mirkovic" --- uhh ... scouting Balkan Basketball HEAVY? All of them play. Two are over seven foot. Two others 6'7" and 6'9". Throw in two Indiana guys and a Kansas guy and you can play. (very physically at times.) Where are we on that kind of recruiting?

Without a miracle turnaround, feels like it’s wraps. Can’t be this bad in Year 3 bc you lost one player.

Issue is that this job is going to be less desirable now than it what at the Shrewsberry hire because he failed so hard. People in the industry seem to think a lot of him. You’re also going to absolutely blow up the roster with how the portal works today.

Going to need a real monetary commitment from donors in order to get a great hire. I don’t know how many ND alums are looking to put money towards basketball over football today.

My biggest issue with Shrewsberry is that it's more than halfway through year 3 and he's still micromanaging every play like it's day 1 of practice. That isn't a formula for success, and if it's the only way that your guys can execute the offense, then your offense doesn't work.

There just aren't any good solutions at this point. If you fire him, you're probably going to lose every player on the team other than Zackery and Devine. You'll have no incoming class (maybe you can keep it if you keep the S&C coach) and you are going to have a hard time bringing guys in from the portal.

I'm sure it's ongoing, but Pat and Pete need to be in the weeds with this team, and that doesn't just mean with the.coaches, they need to be having conversations with the players (although that probably wouldn't happen during the season). When the team has "fighting" in the nickname, the bare minimum should be fielding a competitive team that actually, you know....fights. Right now, this isn't that.

Would you trade Micah Shrewsberry for Bobby Hurley?

He might be available at the end of the year.

Maybe Cignetti will help build him a roster through the portal and we can 1099 him.

No thank you.
Has coached in college for 10+ years and has never made the second weekend of the tournament, and his ASU program has been on a downward spiral for the past five years.

If we're going to go the college route if Coach Shrews gets fired, my hope is we would give a hungry mid major type coach like Josh Schertz at Saint Louis a hard look.
He has experience in the state with his success at Indian State, and is still young enough at 50 to want to be here for a decade plus if he is successful.
He will be losing his star player Robbie Avila after this season, so would be the perfect time for him to jump ship.

He would be my dream hire, but if he goes on a run with St. Louis this March he will be a hot commodity.

Coach Shrews got dealt a bad hand with the Burton injury this year, but sometimes it is best to just realize things aren't meant to be...and it feels like this relationship is obviously at that point.

ND has to move on, right? Micah is simply not getting the job done.
The fact that there seems to be zero development and growth happening - probably.

However, Brey left this program in total shambles. He's entitled to a long leash, but that leash is getting close to maxing out.
