To be honest, I think Smith may have just been the first player to pop into Floyd's mind (who knows what the reporter's question was?) He's never been healthy, so I don't know what Floyd would have seen out of Smith while he watched practice from the sidelines.
Yes, most likely totally random. Not like the leader of the receiving corp would have any insight into who could potentially emerge from that group. Dude, you're like a caricature of a whiny fan at this point. Maybe he was trying to pump his guy's tires a little bit, but completely dismissing it doesn't seem like the right reaction.
Anyways, it would be huge for this 2012 team if Smith could emerge. Deion Walker never did, so maybe we've seen this movie before. But if he does come on strong (which I don't think is totally out of the question), it would allow Ferg and Brown to progress at a normal pace and not have to get rushed into action.
Out of Daniels, TJ, Toma, Riddick (I wouldn't totally dismiss him possibly playing some slot yet), Smith and Goodman, we need to come up with some production. It will take a serious leap by at least one, but hopefully more like 3 or 4, in order to make this offense better than last year. Eifert is a given; Wood and the whoever else emerges in the running game is close to a given; that QB play will improve (at least be more dynamic) is a strong possibility. Getting a few guys in the receiving corp to step up is the biggest question mark on offense and will go a long way to determining what type of season we have.
At least we have options. I wouldn't be shocked if any of them emerged, or if none of them really did.
