I fear Slaughter's going to have to stay at FS for us next year because no else will be capable.
I believe you are correct. Slaughter will play FS, because Motta will have to play SS next year. It is what it is. But, if they stay healthy ND will be fine back there.

I'm hoping to see Eilar get healthy and get some nice pt as free safety... wishful thinking.

i don't think that's wishful thinking at all. i remember this summer they were talking about him at corner? maybe that's incorrect, with the depth we're building at both positions i like the flexibility eilar gives us.

Hadn't thought of Hardy to CB, but that might solve some problems. We'll currently have only 5/8 CBs for 2012. Moving Hardy and picking up Standifer would put us in pretty good stead there for the short term, at least as far as depth goes.

The downside to that is our FS depth would be Slaughter > ??? > 3:s: freshmen. That may still be preferable to being short-handed at CB since Slaughter is likely to be a "never leaves the field" FS like Smith was in 2011.

This is how I see it half way through the season, what we ended with last year will probably be what we start with next year:

CB1
Jackson
Attkinson/Standifer

CB2
Brown
Shepard/Wood

SS
Slaughter
Motta
Baratti/Shumate/Badger

FS
Hardy/Collinsworth
Prosise/Turner

OLB
Slaughter
Motta
Baratti

I think one of Collinsworth or Hardy step up at the FS. Both seem like good football players, rather than projects to me. Slaughter plays SS with Motta rotating in. When we use Slaughter as an OLB, Motta plays SS. Hopefully one of the freshman is good enough to play as a freshman, but it is such a high risk position that I am not sure. I don't expect much out of Badger, but who knows?

So Standifer committed? Didn't know that.

i think tee and bennett will both be working in the boundary, just my opinion. brown in the field. i think the staff is going to make sure that they have the two best guys on the field and #3 will be a good nickel/dime guy.

Maybe its just me, but I think Collinsworth is going to surprise everyone. Just watching his effort on ST and seeing his intensity, I think he is due for a breakout season. He seems to have pretty good speed (I am not sure what his times are, maybe some of you might post them) and arrive at the ball with the attitude needed for ball separation. Just my opinion, but I think he will be a tremendous asset to the defense this year.

Cam was listed at 5'10", 190 Lbs, and a 4.55 40-yard dash at RB.

Baratti is listed at 6'2", 218 lbs, and 4.45 yard-dash at SAFETY.

I don't see how Cam was underrated. There's probably a number of high-school RBs that are 190 and run 4.55, no?

How many 6'2", 218lb safeties do you see running a 4.45 that are 3/4 star.

Remember, my premise is based on MEASURABLES, which makes up a large part of HIGH SCHOOL ratings. Production definately plays a part in high school ratings, but it's more on potential. If you don't keep that in mind, there's no sense in reading the above.

Sorry, I was called away from the scintillating conversation last night . . .

But does anyone remember Cam's shuttle times?

Had a shuttle time of 3.84 at the US Army National Combine in 2010. One of the fastest ever.

From the Polish Irishman. It appears as a Junior in high school, Cam recored a quicker shuttle time than anyone in the pro football combine, that year or the year after.

I'm with you on this one. Collinsworth is a player.

So where is Mathias Farley in all of this or are we assuming he will be a WR?

Freebie from Inside the Irish. Beast w speed.

NICKY BARATTI
High School: Klein Oak — Spring, Texas
Measureables: Six-foot-two, 215-pounds
Other major offers: Arizona State, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Texas Tech
Fun Fact: Went from quarterback to wide receiver for his Klein Oak team, but will play safety at Notre Dame.
On choosing Notre Dame: ”Notre Dame is an amazing place,” Baratti told Irish Illustrated. “It’s just Notre Dame. What I’ve found out is no other school compares to Notre Dame, facility-wise and even coaching-wise.”
What he’ll bring to the defense: In many ways, Baratti is a perfect developmental recruit. After a senior season derailed from a concussion in the season’s opening game, Baratti switched from quarterback to wide receiver for his Klein Oak team, while also playing safety on defensive. That versatility brings a diverse pallet to South Bend, where he’ll be developed by new safeties coach Bobby Elliott and co-defensive coordinator Kerry Cooks. Perhaps the one thing most intriguing about Baratti is his combination of size and speed. Already a prototype safety, Baratti will benefit from a collegiate strength and conditioning program, and will also bring top-flight speed to South Bend. In an era of fake 40 times, Baratti’s speed seems legit, but more impressively, his quickness is off the charts. Bryan Driskell of IrishSportsDaily.com points out that while Baratti’s 4.52 40 time was impressive, Baratti ran lightning quick 10-yard and 20-yard dashes, faster than elite burners like Brian Kimbrow, Marvin Bracy, and even Ronald Darby (1.36, 2.42 vs. 1.52, 2.57 head-to-head with Darby). His offers aren’t the flashiest, but Baratti will be a fun one to watch develop.

If those are accurate it's a joke that he's not a consensus 5-star. He's bigger faster and probably stronger than Shaq Thompson. What's missing?

He's white.

He should be ranked as a athlete. A 6'2" kid with that size and speed should Atleast be a consensus 4:s:
