IMO Hendrix will be used the same way Tebow was used his Freshman year at FL.

Thing that scares me about Golson is he reportedly had fumbling problems last spring. I know that's like a year ago but still. That's something to be slightly concerned about.

we've seen some turnover problems this season

I can honestly see the QB situation turning into a giant cluster-eff by the end of the year, if not before. There are just a lot of scenarios under which we lose significant depth at the QB position, some more likely than others. But since it's all speculation at this point, I'll avoid going into detail. I just hope guys are open to position changes...

Right now it is a 3-person race.
Golson
Hendrix
Kiel
All 3 are dead even with each other.I think Kiel has a legitimate shot to be the starter this year, but would not be surprised if Golson won the job.I agree I think Hendrix is probably only going to be used for goal-line situations and mop-up duties from now on.Rees is done. There is no shot he plays another down unless god forbid we have a couple big injuries.Red Army for him.

I don't know about you guys, but I havn't been this excited for a Spring Game since last season.lol. But seriously, we are going to see competition at the QB position this spring that most of us ND fans have never seen before I believe. Should be interesting.

Hendrix will start.

Golson will replace him by season's end.

Golson will fret of Kiel.

And in one year, a real competition will take place.

The times of yore will be restored.

Golson= better arm/accuracy>>>>>>speed= starter.

I thought Hendrix was pretty damned fast...not sure how much faster Golson could possibly be...maybe cut the ">" signs in half ;)

If he's got one competitive bone in his body, all of that goes straight out the window.

...Yup

some of us forget what it was like to be 19, and playing football...we tend to put 40 something logic in a kid...pretty rare a kid thinks like that

Tommy doesn't recall his expectations when he came in...he may be reminded by mom and dad why he chose ND in the first place...but I'm thinking he is saying he wants to start....and that doesn't go away, especially after you tasted it....and arguably had some success. I can for sure see him punching out at some point if he doesn't play.

My honest opinion is he will not burn eligibility next year...he may stay and graduate...but I bet he pulls a Dayne and goes to a small school if he has some eligibility.

Hendrix is a little fast but not that fast. A fast quarterback would've scored on that long run against Air Force, not get hawked down at the 1 yard line

I think that was more about stamina than speed. He pretty much ran outta gas at the end there.

As for the QB race this spring, I think anyone who doesn't consider Tommy a threat is sorely undervaluing his experience at the position. While he is clearly #4 in terms of physical ability, you can't discredit his 16, 17 starts. That's 16, 17 starts more than all of the other three combined. THAT SAID, I do think at the end of the day starting any one of the other three is the best for the program, because they all have three or fours years of eligibility and need to start progressing ON THE FIELD. That combined with their higher ceilings and I think that ultimately one of them will win out - most likely a combination of Golson/Hendrix. Unless Kiel comes out of the gate and completely surprises everyone by being a significant improvement over what Golson or Hendrix have to offer, I see the QB situation this spring being as follows:

1-a Golson (between the 20's)
1-b Hendrix (redzone/goal line/short yardage)
3 Tommy (break glass in case of emergency)
RS Gunner (prepping mentally to push hard for the #1 spot in 2013)

This thread needs a poll. Any chance we can start a new thread and somehow merge all of this discussion into it?

YES!!! a poll would be a better way to settle this. Personally I couldnt even make a guess. I think we have 4 guys who have some very good qualities and thats a great situation to be in if your an IRISH FAN!!!!

I don't know why so many love golson at this point... High school film and a spring game?

Maybe he's the guy, maybe not,... Not a large enough sample size yet one way or the other.

Hendrix seems promising, right now I suppose I stand there preference wise.

Rees, well I never spoke up against him but I thought crist should have been given more of a chance there... But, Rees was the starter most of the year so one has to think regardless of fan and alum desires he will get every shot in the spring...

Keil is the wild card and very well could win a starter spot by default if spring doesn't go well, though I don't expect that.

I'm expecting Rees to be starter in Ireland... From a fan perspective, I like Hendrix.

I know this, I trust Kelly more than my fandom, or anyone else's

I like Golson...I really really do....but I just can't jump on the bandwagon for one reason...HE'S SHORT....not saying that a6'0" or so QB's can't be good....they just have to prove it to me first in a game atmosphere. I'm the typical A-hole fan who wants to see a 6'5" 220 pound QB sling the ball around effortlessly and run linebackers over on the goalline. But I'll be totally happy if Golson balls out and is our guy.

Because everybody's favorite player is the back-up QB.

The same things you are saying about Golson, I said about Andrew Hendrix before the FSU game. He got to play against a defense in Stanford that hadn't prepared for him, made some great throws and some great runs, but still threw a pick (and should have been 2 more), and took some bad sacks as well. But because he did some nice things, everyone thought he was the answer. Then he plays against a real defense (should have played much more IMO), throws a horrible pick, and now everyone says Golson is the man, basically sight unseen.

I REALLY hope Golson balls out this spring. I think Kelly must be very high on him, and for that reason didn't play Hendrix as much b/c he thinks Golson is the future (and now Kiel maybe?). We need stronger play at that position obviously. Golson needs to put some serious pressure on the coaches to force them to strongly consider making him the full-time starter.

Regardless, there are 2 guys I don't want to see starting that first game: Rees (been there, done that, unless his arm gets incredibly stronger), and Kiel, because I don't want to start a true freshman in his first game as a collegiate. The game is just too damn hard/fast.At least Golson and Hendrix have had ample time in this offense and in school. We'll see though...

I'm with many in the hope category... But some here seem to expect things out of golson that we flat out have no reason to as of right now...

Back qb point is taken and understood.

I'm still shocked every time someone defends Tommy Rees. So many games that prove he's a bad quarterback, and his most recent was his worst.

Golson's time to shine. Hendrix will always be a steller back up/ change of pace/goal line qb until Kiel takes over

I want Golson to start. I dont want an athletic kid like him to be sitting on the bench.

Is this who we want to start or who will start. Because if it's the second, this board is something else lol

The Poll is "WHO has the best Spring Camp?"

Figured "Who's the starter going to be" would start after that. Just too much to learn 'til then. IMO

I really hope it's Golson, Hendrix, or Keil because IF Rees beats all of them out, in my opinion that says a lot about their understanding of the playbook and potential in general. I have high hopes for all three of them.

If Kiel proves he can play I want him to start with Golson being the faster change of pace guy. Most QBs that become great, most recently anyways, are thrown into the fire their freshman year. Matt Barkley from USC comes to mind.

I want it to be Golson or Kiel. Maybe Hendrix if he can dramatically increase his accuracy. Kiel ran a offense very similar to ours in HS so I think he can challenge For the starting spot. Kiel also appeas to be physically college ready where Golson last year wasn't.
