The only REASON I saw was to keep Manti here another year. So we are risking injury & a loss before a bowl game for Manti? How does this game make A LOT of sense? I love Teo, but playing a whole extra game for one player doesn't make sense. It's highly unnecessary! Do recruits really care enough about this Hawaii game to come to Notre Dame, I doubt it!
Fact is our schedule is hard enough & this game will not help us in any way, but to keep Teo.
The fear of freak injuries should scare you away form any game. Should teams all become independents so that they don't have to play in conference championship games? After all, someone could get hurt.
I can think of several legitimate reasons to play Hawai'i.
1) Who wouldn't want a vacation to Hawai'i? It helps recruiting, if only because Indiana weather sucks and now Kelly can guarantee someone a trip to the greatest place on earth.
2) The attention. The reason has been discussed. Notre Dame would benefit from a another nationally televised game. You don't want to be forgotten like a lot of teams that finish too early.
3) Continuity. You don't want 7 weeks off before your bowl game.
4) Improvement. Coaches would love another week of practice to improve. Any coach, and at all times.
5) Hawai'i isn't good. Their 6-7 record last year in the WAC doesn't scare me.
6) Polls. What if Notre Dame is just shy of a necessary BCS ranking..and then they go demolish Hawai'i 45-0? It helps boost their ranking.
