There has been lots of conversations in the Arik Armstead thread about the subject of playing two sports in college. Football and track are actually two that I see being relatively easy in college because so many of these guys are working to improve their speed in the offseason anyway.

Fair enough but doesn't spring ball interfere with track? Obviously the fall is pretty shot. Seems like the incoming guys would be really focused on techniques, especially at skilled positions. Spring ball focuses on this quite a bit I think.

Are you suggesting that, in retrospect, the pushes for Poole and Wright were not to ADD to the DB class but to fill a soon-to-be-created hole left by Darby?

Those two in particular are obviously worth pursuing in their own right, but I think Darby's wavering commitment caused the staff to spend a lot more time than it otherwise would have recruiting CBs. Put another way, if Darby was an EE and as solid as Shepard throughout the process, the staff may have been content to grab a 3:s: guy like Standifer and focus on other areas of need.

Pure speculation on my part, of course.

Obviously Darby's decision to de-commit was not based one one thing only. I don't know why anyone here would question his explanation that track was A (note "a" not "the") factor. Clearly he saw and heard some good things at Clemson and at the UA game. He probably has been thinking for quite awhile that he may have pulled the trigger to quickly and now wants to make it clear to ND that he will be re-evaluating his commitment.

That is what happens sometimes when colleges recruit and offer players well over a year before NSD. It is also why good recruiters (like ND's) keep recruiting players like Wright and Poole and Redmond.

The way I look at it ND is in the mix for all 4 of these elite corners. I would be completely satisfied if we were to land one of them.

Anyone else hoping he pulls the ol' Shaq Thompson and we use his recommitment to fire the rest of the recruits up into jumping on the Notre Dame bandwagon? I mean it almost worked for Cal, imagine what it would do for ND. ;)

I want him at ND, but a bigger concern would be if we didn't have our *** covered if he didn't come. I have faith in this staff.

Yeah, you're right there is an impact from a football developmental standpoint, especially in terms of technique and grasping nuances of scheme. The reason why I say it's "relatively" easier is because there is still overlap with some of what these guys would be working on anyway = speed. Contrast this with baseball, basketball, etc., and I think there's a significant difference in this regard.

I'm not holding my breath, but I have the utmost faith in Kelly and his staff to do what it takes to hang in with this kid and hopefully get him back. Kelly hasn't proven a whole lot as a coach yet, but he has proven to be and to have hired a hell of a coaching/recruiting staff. Those guys can close, that's for sure.

That being said, this is really disappointing. Not unexpected, but disappointing. I was really looking forward to seeing Darby in the secondary and on special teams. He has the world-class speed ND has been severely lacking in recent years. Oh well, let's get Wright. Next man in.

For those of you who've dubbed Ron, "Nitro", That moniker is now gone. If he wants it back, it needs to be "earned back. From now on and going forward, he is to be referred to as just, Ronnie.

Thank you.

I know that everyone is disappointed and I am also (as disappointed I am im myself for feeling this way over the feelings of an 18 year old!!) In thinking about it, I would love it if he came. With that being said, if he doesn't want to be here, then I don'e want him taking a spot from someone who does want to be there. I hope that Kelly doesn't give up on him and it seems like he is still really considering us. If he decides to go elsewhere, we go after Yuri and the TCU committ (Johnson??) and maybe land the Armstead bros. Rest assured, ND, the sun will come up tomorrow!!

yes he must earn it back. Isn't Darby the one that referred to himself to be like the next rocket, or was that someone on the forum can't remember. However at this point instead of "NITRO" it's now more like "NACHO" nacho teammate.

Easy boys, let's not become a cautionary tale.
"Well I was gonna recommit and then read all this stuff on IE, so I'm going to Southern Cal" -Darby

We all hope he comes back, and will happily accept him into the fold.

Guess what? I de-commit from being committed to Ronnie.

Ronnie has lost his nickname, his preferred number, my support and his "Kids Club Card" at Perkins out on 31 by the turnpike. This whole situation has gone way beyond the feared Triple Dog Dare area which can't even be spoken in this household.

The gauntlet has officially been thrown down. I can only hope that this whole situation isn't direct related with the Mayan calendar running out this year?!? Do we have common ground here? Is our demise near?

I find it funny that some people expect others not to say negative stuff about a recruit decommitting. It would be like a girl breaking up with a guy and saying she wants to see what else is out there and maybe she will be back. Screw that, I would be pissed.

That said I am not happy but I will also not freak out. I am more worried about the QB issue than anything else right now.

You mean you find it funny we ask people to act like adults and not rip a 17-18 year-old kid??? Why? You simply have to realize that families and recruits read this site and others. Last year alone, we had Lynch decommit as well as Tuitt and even Prestwood. People ripped them to the point we had to completely shut down the Lynch thread. Ripped their character, ripped their upbringing, ripped everything. Why? Because we didn't like a choice THEY had to live with.

And then all 3 came back to ND. What does those 'adults' ripping those kids have to say about them now? "Lynch mob baby!!! And he's doing well in school - definitely a ND man all the way!!!" "Tuitt is a beast. Great kid who really gets ND!!!" "Prestwood is going to start next year baby!!!"

How about we let it play out? Why act like jerks? Eff it, if he doesn't want to be here, he's not coming. ND isn't for everybody - and thank God for that. I hope BADLY that he comes, I really do, but I'm not going to impeach his character (at least not until after he signs with a different school LOL).

For the life of me, I'll NEVER understand why these losers take to Facebook and Twitter (and yes, even Irish Envy) just to rip these high school kids behind the cover of a keyboard, especially considering it's been proven time and time again that it hurts the school you root for. Sorry, but it's pathetic...

You have to remember these are teenagers making one of the most important decisions of their life. We get to choose from thousands of student/athletes every year, they have one chance to choose a University.

I agree to a point but venting on a message board like IE is not really affecting the kids unless they look for the information themselves. Tweeting them or facebooking them is different. Here is my issue with the whole situation. Let me preface this by saying this is not the case here but it is something to think about.

Being a coach I get to sit in alot of these recruiting pitches and meetings. One big selling point is for these guys to commit early because it is a win win for everyone. The players get an "insurance" of sorts from alot of the coaches that if the player were to be hurt they will be taken care of still by the university because they have comitted to them. Now we know that some schools lie about this but overall most have kept these promises.

The issue I have is some players committ early then come back and decommit once they are done playing and start looking around. These schools and staffs stick by these players and then they bail once they are safe not playing anymore. I am not saying this is Darby or Perkins case but it just seems wrong to give your word and have the insurance of a scholly waiting, only to back out late.
It is a flaw in the system and until they let players sign early or make coaches hold to committed players it is sadly fair that both sides can change their mind at any time.
