Either A) there is nothing to this and Hinton isn't going anywhere (or at least to OSU) OR B) there is something to it. Either way, he needs to step up and do something about this. The kids have a bowl game today and, as long as he's still a ND staff member, he has a responsibility to the team and BK to help reel in the BEST recruiting class possible right now. He is doing a disservice by not opening his mouth and either A) assuring everyone there is nothing to this or B) having the balls to tell Urban that the talks needs to stop until at least after the bowl game. Have some effin loyalty to your CURRENT team for the love of God!

Seriously, I have a family member who has been in the coaching game for 40+ and I've never heard of anything like this. Granted, I was younger when he was coaching his bigger gigs and he has transitioned into more of a coaching sage on two staffs over the last 10 years: coaching, yeah..a bit, but mostly golfing and schmoozing boosters and doing some recruiting.

He was a head coach at lower levels (NAIA) but has always been a position coach at the programs where he was at and he never left one program to be a position coach at another. I don't understand why Hinton would consider such a move ($$$??) and why people care so much (recruiting???).

It just seems asinine to me that we care and that he'd make such a move.

A. We care because he did a damn good job. The running backs haven't looked this good in a very long time. I'm talking running with the ball, protecting the football (much improved for both backs who are very fumble-happy), catching the football, and perhaps most importantly, blitz pick-up.

B. We care b/c staff continuity is extremely important. It is hard and rare to keep a staff together, but when you can (assuming it's a good staff) the team is that much better. Look at Urban's teams after his staff left; look at Stoop's teams after his staff left; look at Carroll's teams after his staff left. his stuff matters. Losing Molnar isn't that big of a deal b/c Kelly can do his jobs and he wasn't a great recruiter at all. Hinton is a very good coach AND he recruits well.

C. We care b/c, like I just mentioned, he recruits well.

D. Hinton could leave because he is very close to Urban Meyer. They go back a long ways. Also, Hinton is about 2-3 years of working in Ohio to receiving his Ohio pension. That is a major carrot for him. So there is a lot of incentive to taking that job...

So was I dreaming when I heard Kelly say that the staff was staying together and that he was excited about the continuity he had in place going forward? Wouldn't that end and dispell rumors about staff changes or was Kelly blowing smoke?

Could have just been blowing smoke. He really didn't say that no one was leaving.

+1 CV.. BK announced at his press conference that the staff was staying in tract that in all likelihood the OC would be internal and hr would like the replacement for that internal move to be internal as well..

The thing is, despite what everyone has said publicly, I have always had a bad feeling about this ever since Taylor Decker said he was "99% Irish" and the only thing that could change his mind would be "a coaching change."

We'll see what happens.

Okay, well thanks for clearing up all of that. Becoming vested in a pension benefit is a big deal so if he left for OSU, even if it was a lateral move, I wouldn't blame him. A lot of assitants do just fine from a monetary standpoint but they aren't raking in millions so having the ability to have some form of income replacement at retirement is a big deal as they mostly likely will not be able to rely solely on private savings and social insurance to provide sufficient income.

I know nothing about the specifics of his "Ohio pension" but I've never heard of a all or nothing defined benefit pension plan. Usually, you make a percentage of your last year salary (or average of last couple or highest pay years). Lets say employees in theory get their full pension after 30 years but don't make it to 30 years of employment, their percentage is simply adjusted downwards. You usually lose 1 to 2% per year. If this is the case for Hinton, not being employed by tOSU is not a huge deal. His pension payments would simply be slightly lower. I also do not know if ND's coaching staff accumulates pension benefits while being employed. If they do, the conversation about his "Ohio pension" is a non factor.

True--there is no such thing as 30 year vesting--that would be a violation of ERISA. Couple of items come into play:
1. 30 years could be considered a full career and the benefit may be reduced by a certain percentage for each year of service short of 30 years that the participant did not complete at retirement.
2. If the Plan is a final average pay type plan--which most government plans are--than his final three or five years of pay will be used to determine the benefit. I don't know what other college positions he held in Ohio but it sounds like he held a lot of high school coaching gigs. I would have to imagine that three years of pay at OSU would probably lead to a dramatic increase in the benefit.

Don't get ahead of yourself. tOSU is playing a bowl game on the 2nd. Meyer has a staff announcement on the 3rd. Wouldn't count my chickens just yet.

ISD posters say Hinton indeed is leaving for tOSU, likely as tight ends coach (per tOSU boards). To be announced this week.

Whatever he feels is best for his family/career.

I assume Warriner is being promoted to OC so BK will probably add two more coaches assuming Hinton does leave officially.

As Brian Kelly said, #NotreDame staff remains intact. Or? Not. RT @BillBankGreene: Tim Hinton to Ohio State as an assistant. Tight ends.

Other than being back in his home state, what does OSU offer that we dont? My guess would be that Meyer is offered him a much higher pay?

This bothers me mainly because there's no obvious motivation for this move.

Would love to know why this happened. We can't let other programs cherry pick our assistants.

What angers me is that him and BK both stated he would be staying. Hinton even pulled the "Oh ESPN knew about me going to OSU even before I did...I wish they would tell me!" card. This annoys me to no end.
