Todd O'Brien: St. Joe's won't give release to play at UAB - NCAA Basketball - SI.com

I know there are two sides to a story, but this sounds pretty childish on the part of St. Joe's coach.

...I suspect St. Joe's will lose some recruiting battles over this...responsible parents just won't want anything to do with this kind of behavior.

As for the NCAA...not shocked in the least. More and more they exist to add legitimacy to the commercialization (read $$$$) of collegiate athletics...they are a giant freaking fraud.

I'm Sorry for this kid...in the entire scheme of things, what could St. Joe's possibly say that would justify their actions. I try to be a "two sides to every story" kind of cat, but I'm seriously at a loss as to what this kid could possibly have done to justify such behavior...

Any college coaches out there???? What do you think this kid could have done?

I'm a huge SJU fan. Not really sure what Martelli was thinking here.

What a shame. I don't know what's St. Joe's coach thinking. Sounds like he's bitter and wants to screw his future. If Todd wants to get his graduate degree at another school then let him pursue his dream. I think some recruits will take a hard look at this situation, because it could happen to them.

BS move by a small time coach.
If the kid wants his release his best way is to tell his lawyer to take it to civil court.
Start costing them money in lawyer fees where the NCAA can't protect them for mental anguish I get the feeling the release paper would be signed real quick.

Statement from Saint Joseph's
"As to Mr. O'Brien's comments on the University's failure to grant him a waiver, the University does not discuss matters relating to current or former student-athletes consistent with our policy and commitment to student privacy issues. It is our understanding that the NCAA has denied Mr. O'Brien's appeal. Although the University was not a party to the NCAA appeal process and has not been informed of the reasons for the NCAA decision in this matter, the outcome of the appeal appears to have resolved all outstanding issues related to the appeal."
-- Don DiJulia, associate vice president/athletic director

That's a BS response. No, they weren't a party to the appeal. They were the reason for the denial. DiJulia notes that SJU doesn't know the reason for the denial but he knows all outstanding issues are resolved? This guy could be a congressman.

I guess I just don't understand. If I am a coach and a player doesn't want to be there. Why keep him? Also, if the article is fact, the coach wasn't playing him as much anyways. Which also does not make sense to me, either.

I know some kids at SJU. I'll ask them about it tommorow. There was another player that asked to transfer this offseason and was allowed the release.

May it be where he intends on transferring to? Someone in conference?

He actually transferred from Bucknell after his freshman year. He sat out a year and was a starter his soph year but last year he was overtook by really good freshman. Wants to transfer to UAB.

Two different conferences. SJU is Atlantic 10 while UAB is Conference USA. The closest A10 school to UAB is UNC-Charlotte about 8 hours away.

This is strictly a coach grinding an axe.

He's already at UAB, in classes since August as a graduate student.

I think it was SJU and Martelli have had a ton of transfers over the past 5 years. SJU only has 9 on scholarship which easily could be 8 if we didn't offer some terrible white SG right before signing day. No excuse but I think Martelli was fed up.

Sounds like a lot of HIS players have been fed up with him.

Maybe, I know that one of Martelli's selling point is that we are one of the top teams in the A10 consistently and SJU only had 11 wins total in both 09 and 10 so players expected much bigger things.

I would be looking into any and every way I could sue the school and coach. If you could prove you had a chance to go pro with this season and they are preventing it with no reason you could be talking serious money. I would through that at them to get your papers then continue with it to teach them a lesson.

We have both listened to him on 610. He can come off somewhat cold, however I hear that he is an extremely nice and charitable guy--he goes out of his way for anyone (except this former player, obviously). Heard that he frequently visits Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. On one occasion, he gave the father of the son his personal cell number and told him to call him anytime he wanted tickets and he would bring him into the locker room of the team to hang out etc. Clearly, St. Joes is no Duke, UNC, UCONN, Cuse etc, but still a nice gesture. This will sound really dumb to most of you--but if you lived in Philly and I told you that I could call Phil Martelli for tickets, people would think that was pretty cool.

That being said, his alleged initial reaction to the transfer request does not suprise me. You know that coach who likes to blame a certain kid and make them the scapegoat for a team's lack of success and then benches him as a means of motivation? That is how Martelli rubs me just from listening to him. It seems like he got the "Hey 7-footer, youre soft, didnt develop, so Im going to hold it over your head" treatment. And because Martelli thought he was soft, he tried to use intimidation to back Brian into a corner which isnt right.

St. Joes has a decent squad this year. Im pretty sure that they would have alot of depth with a 7 footer coming off the bench. St. Joes has been a stepping stone the last 2 years, with back to back 20 loss seasons. Like NDPhilly said, there have been several player departures to differnt universityes. Because of these reasons, The boo-birds have been out hoping that he gets fired.

I thnk its easy to say "just grant his release". Negative pressure makes people act in crazy ways, especially when you have a chance to turn things around with the potential of having a solid season.

Very interested to see how the local media here reacts to this story. They tend to kiss his ***. I havent heard much about it yet. I think Martelli thinks he is a local god. At this point, everyone is in too deep to turn this situation around. It could have been handled differently upfront, but at this point, grant the release. Too much spite nowadays.
