Brian Kelly has used the word "productive" about a half-dozen times in the first minute of his press conference on bowl prep.

Brian Kelly is coaching the QBs on a day-to-day with Charley Molnar focusing strictly on UMass now after being named head coach.

No role for FSU

Kellys says "flow of the game" will play some part in Andrew Hendrix's role at the bowl game. "We know he's going to play."

Kelly says, "we're still having those conversations" regarding Eifert and the NFL draft. Expects a decision "very quickly"

hopefully Rees can last a few series and be productive instead of getting blitzkrieg'd on the first set of downs.

Asked if there's anybody more excited for teh FSU game than Louis Nix, Kellys says "I'd argue Aaron Lynch would be in that mode too."

Kelly non-committal on Theo Riddick's role next season relative to receiver or running back. Hints recruiting might determine his role.

Kelly on Tim Hinton's future, "I have not talked to Urban Meyer" and said he's confident Hinton will remain on staff at ND.

Kelly says no injuries to report that will keep any new players out of the Champs Sports Bowl.

That's a change. I had read that there wouldn't be a new coach until after NSD.

True and I didn't quite understand that (why he was going to wait). I'm sure BK doesn't want to do anything in a rash manner and figures he is best suited focusing solely on preperation for the bowl game. When you throw in the quiet period there is probably limited benefit a new position coach could bring during this time. I look forward to a strong new addition to the staff, someone that will help between Jan. 4 and NSD on the recruiting trail and more importantly, help w player development on the field for some time to come.

"We'll have another coach on board for January 4th recruiting."

For whatever reason, I am giddy about adding another member to the staff. I really liked Molnar, but we have an opportunity now to scour CFB looking for an up-and-coming coach/recruiter. Coaches from just about every staff in the country would have to listen if BK called about a position on his staff.

It is a better job now than it was when Kelly hired his original staff when he took the job, because the program is now clearly stable, any institutional disadvantages that may have previously made coaching/recruiting at ND more difficult have largely been addressed, and the staff that is already here has proven that ND can get out and recruit the most elite players in the country.

I cannot wait for the chatter about who will join the staff to heat up.

After NSD the coaches have their annual convention which might explain the former timing. But why wait. Other schools won't be.

Get him on board ASAP. It might make a difference with a recruit in January but at the least he'd know who the players are and hit the ground running for Spring Ball.

I do agree that there is certainly value to getting a replacement in asap, just trying to figure out BK's thought process. I could only summize that he didn't want to rush the process and not get the right guy in here and possibly stunt the upside of the position based on a quick pick. I agree there is some real value to getting someone on board sooner rather than later. There are not alot of BK's decisions that I disagree with, he is clearly a man w a plan.

An out-of-the-box thought: Kelly and the new coach are already decided but they want to wait until after that guy's bowl game, so as not to interfere with his duties to his old players or put any external stress into the situation.

Recently in an interview Charlie Weis acknowledged that he hired assistant coaches that he had never met when he became ND's head coach. He was in the pros, he didn't know college assistants. Kelly comes from a lifetime of college coaching with a data bank of personal contacts. I have no doubt he's had a list of potential replacement coaches in his head long before he came to ND.

Here is a completely speculative idea: [but fun] ... Oklahoma State finishes it bowl game with Stanford on January 2nd. Their OC/QB/ receivers expert was an assistant with Kelly at Grand Valley State way back when in 1989. .... just a thought.
