They obviously know what they are doing since they just upped Weaver, took on Wells contract, and signed Pujols and Wilson. Other things like Gary Mathews Jr. contract is off the books ($11 million) will take effect next year. They were paying for him even though he was on another team. There are other variables that you and I are not aware of too.

They obviously know what they are doing? Yup, they seemed to know what they were doing with Wells contract too. How's that working out?

Dropping $11mm of Mathews Jr contract doesnt make up for the fact that they increased their payroll by $27.3mm. This is all simple math dude.

They already sell out their stadium, so how do you think they plan on doubling their profits in order to break even? Not with increased ticket sales.

Okay, since you are a know it all. Did you account for the new tv that will earn them 100m more every season? And to say Artie Moreno does not know what he is doing is foolish. He has double the net worth of the franchise since he took over. Sports Illustrated rated the Angels the number one overall organization is sports.

Arte Moreno Spent $70 Million More On Pujols Then He

First of all, that contract doesn't start until 2015. Second of all, it's $80mm, not $100mm, and not $100mm more than what they already have, its an increase of $20mm. So even with increased revenues (four years from now), they still have a shortfall with these new contracts.

Btw, he bought an undervalued asset because Disney was on the verge of bankruptcy and fire-sold all of their assets (including the brand new stadium the city of Anaheim built). That is why the team's value has gone up. This also has very little to do with the Angels ability to sign good contracts.

Except the fact that he didn't actually have correct info. But you Angels fans don't care about details.

Well, I'm at work and just read the article that was posted. As an Angel fan, do I like the fact that it's a 10yr deal?? Not necessarily...From what I gathered, there is a no-trade clause as well...Not the most desirable thing ever, either. My point is that the angels have been sitting on their hands since they last won the World Series. It was a necessary evil. I feel that God-forbidding a string a injuries (Ken Griffey Jr. style), that Albert will be 10-20x's more effective in a DH role by the time he's the age of Jim Thome. Is that worth $25mil then? No. However, you have to pay to play.

Wooly, I do respect where you're coming from and the numbers you're providing though.

*ehem... may I present to you...

Albert Pujols of Los Angeles Angels put on DL - ESPN Los Angeles

Too bad for Pujols, I don't wish injury on anybody. Looks like he is out for the rest of the season. So far the Angels have paid Pujols $48mm for 47 home runs in two seasons. Neither season did he have a +.300 BA.

His worst two seasons of his career, and he'll return next year as a (supposedly) 34 year old player.

He did lots of good things for St. Louis during his time there. I'm grateful for that.

But karma (and age) finally caught up with "The Machine." And to that I say:

Man as much as Ryan Howard's contract sucks in Philly, at least they can buy it out before 2017. Pujols will be getting 25+ million until 2021.

DAMN. This is why i dont understand some sports teams giving big long term deals to guys that are aging. It just seems like somethings bound to go wrong. Im glad my cardinals arent stuck dealing with this

The crazy thing about the Pujols contract is that all of us Cards fans were calling this before he even re-signed. Most of us (I know I was) did not want the Cards to give him a ten year deal, regardless of the money.

Also, these contracts usually take a couple years before they backfire. This one backfired immediately. They have paid almost $1million per homerun from Pujols.

Throw your boy under the bus, run him over and reverse.

Wooly isn't throwing him under the bus at all. I don't know any Cards fans that have or will. Everyone appreciated his time in STL but the whole fanbase was pissed when he left, but understood that the Cards couldn't offer him that. And like Wooly said, nobody wanted to offer him that. It would set the franchise back at least 8-9 years.

2 years ago there was a debate in Philly in whether or not we should try to trade Ryan Howard for Albert Pujols. God they both suck now.

Exactly i wanted him to stay. I loved him when he played on the cards but theres no way he should get a deal like that. If he would have settled for a smaller deal and less money thats great but he just left for money. I wouldnt have wanted the colts to give Manning a long term deal either. But since Pujols decided to walk out on the cards for his big contract and money...yes karma is a bitch.

He has never been connected w Steroids, although hard to discount the possibility that at some point he may have used. In this age of rampant use and the way his production has dropped along with his body breaking down, it's got to be at least considered.

No one said anything negative about Pujols. I said that I felt bad for him and Rack added that he is a Cards legend (which I totally agree with). I don't see how pointing out his bad contract is "throwing him under the bus".

This could have been our bad contract, so its relevent to us. We respect Pujols for what he did in St Louis, but that doesn't mean that he is beyond reproach in terms of being evaluated as a player.

He is a HoFer and a Cards legend... but he has a terrible contract with the Angels. All of these are facts.

At least Albert is a class act and is probably doing some good charity work in the LA area. I know he still continues to do charity work in St. Louis.
