Decommitted from Penn State November 2011... Committed to Penn State June 2011...

Recruiting Notes

Scout: A high motor player no matter if he's playing offense or defense. Offensive line is his future position in college. Currently plays left tackle but is better suited for right tackle or a move inside to guard. Uses his hands well, has good feet and athletic ability. Has a frame to be a 300+ pounder. Has some minor areas he could improve on; keeping his hands up in pass pro and getting his heals in the ground in his stance but all are correctable.
ESPN O'Connor is a tough agile football player with the explosion and playing strength to dominate opponents. Has the size and athleticism for the offensive tackle position at the major level of competition. Displays very good flexibility, balance and agility showing the ability to be a very effective player in space; playing out of a three point stance this prospect comes off the ball low and hard with excellent initial quickness and explosion. Shows very good fit and pad level when drive blocking; can roll his hips and get underneath defenders pads, knocking them off the line of scrimmage; does a very good job sustaining downfield as a result of his blocking base and persistent leg drive. This guy is a tough run blocker who displays the nasty finishing attitude we look for when evaluating offensive linemen. We see the quickness and agility to block linebackers and play on his feet in space; gives good effort downfield. This player has the athleticism and technique to consistently get a hat on active 1st and 2nd level defenders. We believe he has the necessary to tools to execute all the required run blocks at the next level of play. His upper body playing strength, quick hands and nimble feet should prove to be assets in pass protection; demonstrates the ability to quick and short set; is a good bender showing the ability to slide and play flat footed to the deep set point; is capable of handling edge quickness and change of direction moves. Demonstrates the initial punch necessary to shock defenders and play stout against the power rush; works efficiently to keep his hands inside with good extension. Over time we expect O'Conner will add solid mass to his frame. His physical toughness and skills could earn him early playing time at the BCS level of competition.

Any ginger kid with a last name O'Conner should automatically have to commit to Notre Dame when an offer arises.

It's a blood oath...

Joey loves tradition (3rd video). We got plenty of that. Get him on campus, we have a shot.

Looking it at his offer list, it seems to me that he would be a good get. When I see teams like Oregon and USC offering along with Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin it means he would be a great fit in any system.

I live near Windsor and can tell you that this kid is also a farm boy. This is a country town and he has grown up in a culture of hard working, salt of the earth type living. The same type of kid that Wisconson and Nebraska make their name with.

I would be psyched to bring him aboard.

You live near Windsor? I use to live near there too! One of my favorite mexican restaurants started out in Greeley, now they have a lot of locations. They had the BEST margarita's.!

Irish Contact Former Penn State Commit

Christian McCollum ISD
11/14

Notre Dame didn’t waste any time contacting Joey O’Connor when the 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive tackle from Windsor High School (Windsor, Colo.) decommitted from Penn State.
Literally.
O’Connor became the only Nittany Lion recruit to publicly decommit when he did so on Thursday night and Irish assistant Tony Alford was on the other line when he did so.
“He talked to my dad because I was actually on the phone with the Penn State coaches decommitting at the same time,” said O’Connor.

How the he'll did he know? Diaco must have sensed it and told Alford to call immediately.

They probably didn't care if he had decommitted yet. They probably looked over who was committed to Penn State and decided to try and poach who they wanted.

The timing was probably just luck.
