Penn State Head Coach Candidates

So who do you think is most likely to end up as the head coach at PSU?

Will they even consider anyone on the current staff such as Larry Johnson?

Would Al Golden consider coming back? He says he's happy at Miami, but I'm sure he wasn't very happy at being blindsided about the NCAA investigation.

It doesn't seem like Urban Meyer would be interested now.

Over the past year or two, I have occasionally visited some of the Penn State message boards, and to call that fan base splintered would be an understatement in my opinion. There are lots of people that have felt that Joe should have left several years ago, while there are others that even in the midst of the current scandal believe that Joe should still be the coach if he still wants to. I'm not sure who would want to step into Joe's shadow especially during the middle of all the current mess.

well, according to OSU and PSU bloggers, Urban has houses in Columbus and Happy Valley now, LOL. i simply cannot see Urban getting back involved right now. he seems so relaxed and content calling games and talking football on espn.

Golden has a clause in his UM contract that specifically cites PennSt as the only school he can leave for.

that wouldn't be good for ND! NJ has some athletes and he has been getting some good ones at Rutgers and would be able to recruit much better at PSU

I agree, but he has ties to the school and I think he would leave NJ for PSU. I live in Jersey and I hate it when he beats us out for the top guys.

One thing is for sure, he'll be young.

I agree with the Golden prediction. Miami basically sucked him into a crappy situation and cost him a lot of momentum down there. He will be a great NE recruiter. Sumlin is another good guess, but I don't see it.

I see Meyer on his way to OSU, one of the "three best jobs in college football," according to the man himself. This is better for us than his going to PSU, since it will continue the status quo of OSU dominating Ohio, rather than PSU locking down the whole NE.

Mike Leach is still out there. Long shot, for sure, but who knows?

Just to throw a name out there:

Rich Rod

I'm just assuming that he'd want to get revenge on Michigan.

Charlie Weis. He has the NE connection, perfect fit. Don't see it happening but hey, would be a good second shot for him

Too soon. He needs time to learn to be a head coach and not an OC/QB Coach. Expect Charlie to stay where he is 'til Jr. graduates. They were a packaged deal.

They will treat this hire with complete kid gloves, so I think Leach would be too "risky" a choice since he had baggage (although ridiculous in nature) from TT.

All signs point to Golden. No outsider will want to touch (no horrible pun intended) that program with the current state of affairs going on.

Not even sure Golden will go to PSU.

I'm not so sure I agree with that. This is all speculation, but I am thinking this is a legal matter, not an NCAA matter. I doubt anything in terms of sanctions will come of it. So if Urban Meyer, even with his spotty record with player arrests, comes in, he can play the hero.

I know it's a good gig, but how many coaches would want to go to PSU right now? Some guys want the shot regardless, but think of the crapstorm you're going into as the new coach. You're stepping into a political mess (no way to know right now if the NCAA drops sanctions on PSU). Think of all the new safeguards & red tape the AD will probably drop on the football program.

Then the coach is also the guy who replaces the beloved Joe Pa. And how much can the new coach challenge Paterno's entrenched "system?" Dramatic changes would seem like a rebuke to Paterno, but playing it safe would anger the people who've been chomping at the bit for PSU to modernize their football program. This is only a good spot for someone who's trading up and out of a crappy current scenario. I couldn't see a highly regarded coach with real options on the table wanting this mess. But, I tend to underestimate these people's egos.

I would think that Golden is jumping at this chance to go to PSU. However that would open Miami up to Mike Leach and that could be scary with the Florida kid in his offense holy **** they would be good.
