Halloween Fun!

lets talk about all the different phases of the game, personnel, play calling etc. and whether they are in fact a trick or treat.

offensive line, running game, kick return, TE play, freshmen playing time, recruiting thus far, all are the biggest treats of the season.

SPT play (-kick return), CB play, tommy rees (not a dayne v. tommy debate--purely a t.o. argument), play calling are the biggest tricks.

On whether guys are "tricks" or "treats" we should remember two things: 1). Players are graded on every play not just the times the people on the other ends of the TV screens happen to notice them;
2). Individual plays are complicated and the player who the person on the other side of the TV screen thinks screwed up may not in fact be the player who actually screwed up. The most common example of this is when a receiver reads the defense wrongly and the QB throws the ball to where he should be but is not.

I seriously doubt that many people on this board are ever grading out a player on his total game performance, whereas the Staff ALWAYS is. Also, I doubt that many people on this board take into account when the opposing staff has called the perfect O or D against our staffs' selection, so that no player could have reasonably graded high on that play. The level of our ignorance is profound compared to that of the Staff. We however seem unable to acknowledge or even comprehend that.

Not sure if this is directed towards anyone in particular but:

I didn't base my opinions on one or two plays. Rather I used a whole eight games to come to a basic conclusion. Your point holds water to one or two plays. For instance, if someone were to say Dayne Crist has played bad all year.... I give you that one. He hasn't played enough to give a fair judgement. However, Fox has played all year long. So if the opposing team has called the perfect offense on the majority of Fox's plays, or Navy's quarterback threw the perfect ball fake last weekend, then fine. It doesn't take an division one coaching staff to see that Fox has not played well this year, and I'm taking into consideration his total performance. He has been lost in pass coverage, late in identifying runs and where his gap control is.

IM3: I'm honestly glad to hear that you've been grading out Fox [and maybe other guys as well?] on the team. It would be of great interest to me to see your work on this [and I'll bet others would appreciate it too] as I, at least, have been too lazy to do it. I'd love to see the game breakdowns and bet that no one will mind you starting a full thread for this. It's the kind of detail that all of us crave. I encourage you to do us that service.

Once in a while a guy like Tom/Easton will post some stats he's worked on and they're great. BGIF does things like that occasionally too. That poster "Coach D" on another site sometimes breaks whole offenses and defenses down. All good stuff. Please go for it.

i would add that, based upon my own perceived audience skewed perception, that carlo calabrese in pass coverage hasnt been much of a treat.

If you're saying Carlo has improved in pass coverage, I agree.
