I know Niumatalolo irks some people around here with his antics, but he always seems to pull some surprise on the Irish and catch them off guard.

Last year it was running the veer and two years ago he broke out a blocking scheme that he hadn't shown all year. I think Kelly has addressed this by not focusing as much on a specific style, but by focusing on defensive responsibilities. There are a million variations of the option and Navy could use any of them at any time.

Time to put the past away and look forward to Navy. We have all offseason to complain about the losses, It is game week! . Here is TGH Navy Preview

Eh, Navy's the team they usually are this year. Screwing around w/ their basic triple-option may not be as advisable as in the past for him.

More frightening to me is the state of the defensive line in this game. They're going to be playing a lot of young guys w/ 1 starter out and another nursing a high ankle sprain I think it was. This is just about the worst team in college football to play w/ true frosh being thrust into the limelight on the d-line or in the linebacking corp imo.

Yeah, with out a doubt the defensive line is the biggest concern. At least the boys got some playing time against AF. Should be interesting.

he will instruct his players to try to take out the knees of our players even after the whistle blows. i respect that these kids serve our country, but they are dirty and coached to be dirty. i just hope we don't lose any guys and that we get an early lead and build so they are forced to pass block.

Ricky Dobbs isn't there so I'm not worried. I'm fully confident we obliterate Navy this year.

We should drop into a 2-5 formation with defensive ends and 5 linebackers about 4 yards from the LOS. This would give us a running start on attacking the ball.

haha...just thinking outside of the box.

very worried, we are reeling after a devestating loss to our biggest rival, our d-line is hurt, and theyve played teams very close this year. This game scares me every year and after the last two it scares me more this year.

Navy has been mostly competitive in all of their games this year.

Recall the 3 point loss to South Carolina, anyone?

The new QB is a great little athlete.

And then there's that Teich guy. (I hope we knock his **** in the dirt. But he's a TOUGH kid.)

i'm sure the new QB will be allowed to settle in and have the game of his life w/o any pressure at all. hopefully we can let him rip 8 yd passes right in our grills as well.

Veer, smeer. Some weeks ago IrishLax posted a link (I believe in the Navy Game Day thread) to a site where a Navy fan demonstrated via film clips from 2010 Navy games that Navy didn't run a veer but rather the SAME plays they had run earlier in the the '10 season. No, new plays, no new scheme. It was on the game films for anyone to see, for anyone to prepare, and for anyone to MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT.

Post game Kelly danced in the presser with "the veer" line to cover Diaco's butt for poor preparation, and no adjustment.

Check the film clip and stop perpetuating the myth.

This. They simply used an unbalanced line. It was nothing they hadn't done before.

I'll try to find the exact post, but the blog is here:

Kelly said this at halftime first, and again in the presser. Maybe it was an unbalanced line, point is it was a wrinkle that ND wasn't prepared for.

Also (and pay attention here) Coach N said something after the game in 2009 to the effect that "I can't believe they thought we would block them the same as last year"... Do I think that the staff was unprepared? Yes I'm not denying that, the point of the article was that Navy does the unexpected against ND even if it is a small change.

Maybe you know more about football than coach Kelly, but I don't. Or maybe you think coach Kelly was lying.. again i don't. If you do, I'm sure you would have no trouble getting a coaching job in college football. Let me know where you end up.

Stop perpetuating the myth? Stop being hostile BGIF, I'm just going by what both coaches have said, not some rogue blog post. You act like I'm maliciously spreading rumors. Grow up!

That's mighty bad coaching on Diaco's part. Almost hurts to see it online for the world to see. lol

What's bad is that Diaco's biggest weakness is clearly the option and we face all three academies. One thing I like about Diaco though is that he's better than what we've had before, and he is still learning. He's young.

No doubt was it bad coaching. Coaching staff better be ready for everything- veer, unbalanced, flex, and everything else. Freshman need to grow up quick.

Ain't that the truth. We're kinda throwing the guys in the deep end this weekend.

Why would he need tricks? Everyone knows our defense can't stop the triple option

Maybe he'll actually run the veer.

Or hint at it.

During the Terry Brennan era ND opened with Purdue one year. PU's coach Jack Mollenkopf, who was probably the best coach they've ever had, heard a story that in preseason camp Brennan had installed a single wing attack. Mollenkopf worked diligently to prepare his troops. They were prepared. They were ready! Unfortunately, ND didn't use the single wing and won.

I read and watched that Birddog post about 10 times and also watched highlights of some Navy games last year. The plays do not appear any different, though it is hard to if the blocking schemes are different without the ability to slow down the video.

As I said before Coach N did say something after the '09 game (in a taunting way) that indicated he ran a different blocking schemes than '08 when Notre Dame won.

What is obvious in the 2010 game is that ND expected them to run the fullback directly up the middle and when Navy didn't do that they had no way to fix it. Horrible game planning on Kelly's part.

Here's to hoping Kelly has it figured out this year no matter what variation Navy runs.
