Got to credit Kiffin and USC... Unfortunately

I despise Lane Kiffin as much as anyone else does on this board but I thought him and staff had their kids ready to play in a hostile environment and had a good game plan going in. I think the ND staff and everyone else in America thought USC wouldn’t be able to establish a run game against the ND front seven and would be relegated to Matt Barkley tossing the ball around 40+ times. Instead they established a run game early on and stuck with it. Then they used play action to get the ball downfield and quick throws to the sidelines to get their playmakers the ball in space. Those two combos helped against the pass rush and protected the oline. The ND defense seemed to be caught off guard from the get go. I was pleased to see that we made adjustments at half (a sign of good coaching) and held them to only a touchdown in the second half giving our offense a chance to win the game. In a situation like that there’s not much more you can ask for.

As for offense I wouldn’t credit the USC defense or staff much it just seemed like we couldn’t get a rhythm going in the first half. Three reasons why I think this was the case. 1.) ND couldn’t get a first down (everyone seemed tight). 2.) USC scored on their first two offensive drives putting us in a early hole. 3.) USC ate up a ton of clock keeping our offense of the field. Again, I thought the staff made some good second half adjustments and we came out moving the ball. We all know what happened next (I’ll pray for you Dayne Crist).

Overall I don’t think ND got outcoached. USC had a good game plan early on and ND made adjustments accordingly. That’s all you can ask from the staff. Ultimately it’s up to the players to make plays and no one from ND did. It hurts especially after all the manufactured build up to this game. This was clearly tagged as our “coming back” party. I still believe this program is heading in the right direction. It’s just going to take a little more time than we all had hoped. And after 20 plus years of suffering with this team I am not going to give up now. Not when I feel like we are so close. Perhaps I sound like a battered wife, “but he used to be so good to me I can’t leave him for this, we have children together,” but it’s just how I feel… I am starting to ramble and tear up so I’ll leave you with this. Go Irish! Beat Navy!

Losing to USC ruins my whole football year; losing to Michigan and USC brings me to the threshold of my pain tolerance. Hopefully Kelly and Company can bring the Irish back to the days when ND was a perennial Top Ten team and students expected to see a national championship during their four year stay at South Bend.

Kiffin and their players remarks to the media after the game are just pure arrogance, and just embraces the symbol of their crappy school. I wil always hate USC for that.

I honestly think Kiffin didn't have to do a damn thing to win that game. His play calling was pretty bland. What's sad is that it worked so well.

It hurts bad to get run up the middle on. It's like someone sticking you in the gut with a knife. If we had stopped that even with how well Barkley played, I think we would have won.

Perhaps he luck boxed his way into it. But by the looks of it and what I heard from the ND staff this week they thought it was going to Barkleys arm and not USC's run game that would beat us this week. USC came out running the ball and never stopped which led to openings in the pass game.

If I was a USC fan, I'd probably be laughing my *** off, but now..."What now?"

It's short-sighted to dismiss Kiffin's hand in what was a big win (whether he admits it was a big game or not), but heap accolades on our coaches if we win.

Sure the absolute gashing between the tackles made his job easier on Saturday, but he got his team ready to execute the week leading up to Saturday, and he deserves recognition for that.

In summary, Kiffin is a terrible coach and even more terrible person, but you gotta tip your hat to him for what they did.

They had a good scheme. They hit the flanks hard with their speed
and what was most suprising to me was how the ND D-line got manhandled. I thought the D-line was better than that.

On defense, they really took Floyd out of the game.

They were smart. They identified where Tuitt and Lynch were and ran it right at them.

Same as Woods v Wood. Go after the new guys. It wasn't rocket science.

Exactly. This is where "next man in" hurts. Unfortunately our "next" are not ready to go full time yet.

They ran it riht where EJ was and killed us in the 1 st half. Motta gets hurt, a lot of guys like to bash him but he knows his role.

He used the 'N' word if I remember correctly. Definitely appropriate but I hope he comes back. One of my favorite posters!

Haha nevermind, guess he did cross a line. I just saw his bickering with some of the regs.
