ND Stadium Atmosphere

I'm aware of the differing views between NDN and IE. I also read the article and was about to post it on this thread because I took something different from it.

The rules of the stadium and the ushers defending them are a HUGE problem. That needs to change first and foremost. I completely agree with them when they say that a jumbotron will not cure the stadium atmosphere if these restrictions are still in place. However, I support the idea of a jumbotron/field turf/etc because I don't feel these items jeopardize what ND represents as a university. This sort of entertainment would be beneficial during those extra long TV timeouts or official reviews by keeping the crowd revved up (my personal opinion, obviously). I don't feel that article was solely about their hatred of jumbotrons. More so it was about the tranquility of a once common war site that was occupied by spectators and their blood curtailing screams of cheer and what is the cause of it's current state.

Last, to anyone who is still doubting the crowd noise or "sit down and shut up" stories, this article goes into detail with many examples describing this situation. That in itself is worth the read. It should, and will, open your eyes to the problem. Notre Dame Stadium used to be a feared place for opponents to play. Now it's just a historical place. "Ssshhhh, no talking in the museum."

This is one benefit, I guess, but I definitely miss replays more than a kiss-cam or whatever. As sports fans, we're definitely spoiled now, with HD at home and a million replays (plus DVR rewind and slow-mo), and at most stadiums with giant HD screens that can give you the same thing. Its strange watching a close play at a game and not being able to see whether the ball actually came out before his knee was down, or if he actually did step out of bounds, or whether he caught the pass or trapped it, until after the game is over and you're home watching highlights.

To me, a video board in the stadium enhances the experience of actually WATCHING THE GAME at the game.

Exactly. There have been countless times when I send a text to a friend who's at home watching the game to let me know what's going on w/ the replay.

Going back to that article though, the main idea that needs to be taken from it is the stadium restrictions. People need not only to be allowed to yell and cheer, but they should be encouraged to do so. All of this jumbotron/video board/field turf talk can be brought up later. A simple leniency with a rule would change the atmosphere drastically and perhaps instantly.

The way I see it, if someone has a problem with people standing, who will they turn to when the usher looks at them and says, "You're at a live sporting event, you should be standing/cheering as well." They have some options: 1) Go sit down and not be able to view the game. 2) Stand up and cheer themselves 3) Leave and never come back. Sorry, but it won't take long before people realize it's ok to stand/cheer and the whole place will be back to doing so. Especially now that ND is giving us fans something to really cheer about.

Much ado about nothing... play a good game against a good opponent in ND stadium and that old dog will be rocking- guaranteed. Blowouts against Air Force or close losses to Tulsa, on the other hand, will create a lot of pensive fans.

That being said, I totally support this whole crowd noise discussion as it's only adding fuel to what is certain to be a fire come Saturday night. Should be an epic experience for those lucky enough to be there... (stupid army).

Well now I know where to send the ushers with their blue cards. ;)

I'll be doing my part to make Section 22 loud.

It will be dark so i doubt it

I've been at night events before where the flyover was done by helicopters. Not as fast or "impressive" as fighter jets or a bomber. But they go a bit slower and lower so you have time to check them out in the dark.

ND vs. AF game wasn't too popular, at least among the at-home viewers. Lowest rated NBC telecast ever.

That is definitely way better. If I am remembering correctly, I have seen at least one night fly-over - the Patriots 2004 season opener vs. Indy was a 9:00 start on Thursday Night Football. I recall that there was a flyover that night, as there is for every NE home opener.

NBC says it'll have 20 cameras at #NotreDame vs. #USC game. One in student section. "Slightly up" from a normal game.

The last two ND games I have been to (Utah, MSU) there were flyovers. The interesting part about it was the pilots did a pass about 3 hours before game time while everyone was still tailgating. I hope they do this again, as it accelerates the buzz in the crowd far before game time.
