McFadden, Jones, and Hillis
vs
Williams, Brown, and Jacobs (plus Jason Campbell at QB)
...maybe the best backfields ever?
That's a good question! I'd give Arkansas a slight edge because for most of those guys' time, Matt Jones was the QB, and he was a definite run threat as well with 4.3 speed in his own right. Also because the one year he was at Auburn (Juco transfer then transferred out), Jacobs couldn't really ever move up the depth chart and didn't get many carries or opportunities.
I'm sure there were some pretty bad @ss backfields pre WWII and then in the wishbone years at Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, etc. I know Army had Doc Blanchard and Glen Davis in the late 40's. Of course the 4 Horsemen were awesome too. I know somebody mentioned SMU. Dickerson and James were awesome there and very good in the pros as well (one being a HOF and could've broken the all time rushing record if he weren't a head case). That Nebraska backfield was pretty good too. I loved Tommy Frazier as well, but I think his actual rushing numbers (and I'm going by memory here) weren't that amazing (of course his won-loss record was though). I'm pretty sure Ahman Green was a freshman Phillips last season there as well and stepped up quite a bit when Phillips was suspended. I think Nebraska also for a year or two in the early 80's had Mike Rozier, Roger Craig, and Irving Fryar all in the same backfield. I don't know what years Turner Gill started, but I guess he would've technically been there as well. I think Miami also had Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, and Willis McGahee all on the same team at one time. Jarrett Payton too, who actually did spend a year with the Titans. USC has had some amazing backfields too. I think Justin Fargas (played several years for the Raiders) was a senior Bush and White's FR year. I'm not sure if Charles White and Marcus Allen overlapped any. Oh yeah, I guess Barry Sanders and Thurman Thomas were on the same team together too, but didn't really ever compose a backfield together.
I know I'm missing some great backfields (this was just off the top of my head), but if anybody else remembers some great backfields, feel free to throw them out here. Of course the best true overall backfield was ND when they had Tony Rice, Tony and Reggie Brooks, Ricky Waters, and Anthony Johnson! Not that I'm biased or anything though! Was Culver there as well in '89?
