Irish Seek Special Teams Boost

I didn't see this posted in any of the other threads. Posters have demanded different players punting and receiving punts. Change for change sake.
Somoygi runs down the likely suspects and Mike Elston comments on why others haven't been viable.
Brindza for Turk
Operation time translates to he takes too much time to get the kick off. I think I commented last winter that he seems to take a long time with steps. That would make him a candidate for blocks. Turk has been lauded for avoiding blocks especially when he has to field errant snaps like a 3rd baseman.
Returnmen - Fumbles and Lack of Returns
Did you catch the underlined part, "The Irish have often called for no returns this season"
Opponents have punted 18 times, ND has fumbled 3 and tried to return 7.
Riddick fumbled twice and was replaced by Goodman who fumbled.

Brindza for Turk
“He’s primarily a kicker,” said Elston of Brindza. “His technique and operation time, it would be tough for him to get in there right now and run with the first group based on his operation time. We’d be compromising our protection and ability to get the ball off. He’s more inconsistent at this point than Ben.
“Ben demonstrates in practice that he can get it done; Kyle hasn’t demonstrated in practice that he can do it yet.”

The Irish have often called for no returns this season, but what has particularly frustrated Elston is when the alignment and call is set up for a return, there has been no production.

“When you’re in a punt return situation, the minimum you want to get when you’re going to return the ball is 10 yards,” Elston said. “We’ve been averaging going backwards … we’re not only not catching the ball consistently, we’re making poor decisions on when we’re going to return the ball. We need to be more conscious of making good decisions.”
Riddick fumbled twice and was replaced by Goodman who fumbled.
“Robby Toma hasn’t done it since high school,” Elston noted. “He’s a work in progress back there but he’s back there and he’s doing a good job, so we’ll see.”
Freshman running backs Atkinson, Cam McDaniel and rookie wideout DaVaris Daniels also are getting more auditions, but all had their struggles in that area of the game in August.
