Actually he said, specifically, that he needa to control his emotions. Period. He didn't say "when I'm on camera."

I don't think it needed to be addressed in the first place. I think opposing fans like to bring it up because they like to razz the Irish, and they've never played football outside of their backyard

Here's the exact quote:

COACH KELLY: Yeah, I think I was extremely frustrated with the game. You know, what I have to recognize is that I'm on TV all the time. You know, do a better job of understanding when that camera is on me. Seems like it's on more than I'm used to. So I'll have to do a better job of controlling my emotions.

Note the emphasis on cameras. He didn't say anything about being embarrassed, or his yelling having a negative effect on the players.

He didn't say "when on camera, I need to...". It was a standalone sentence and, in talking to a family member who coached at the D1 level for years, he said what he saw was out of control and, yes, believe it or not, these kids can be shaken.
Like he said, if you had a boss who ripped your *** for every mistake and followed you from his/her office back to your office to do so it would be pretty tough. You'd.probably get pretty shaky after a while and you'd.probably hate your job.

I'm going to neg rep anyone who defends screaming at kids until their head turns red. :curse:

These aren't kids!!! THEY ARE ADULTS!!!! Time to put the big boy pants on. They're getting a $250,000 education for freaking free. It's pretty simple really... Get good grades or get the hell out. We have no use for you. Give me results on the field or you'll be replaced. Thanks for coming....now go to the back of the line and EARN your way back.

This shouldn't be that hard.

I'm disappointed in the fact that we're growing a generation of "pussies" because mommy and daddy think they're "special". At any institution across the country, you produce results or you're gone (grades) or replaced (production on the field). What's so hard about that? It doesn't matter how great of a kid it is.......

We've had walk on's who were fantastic kids and I don't recall hearing any of you bitching and moaning about how they were being treated. They get the crap beat out of them on the practice field and never see the light of day in ND stadium. Where's the emotion for them? Is it different for a scholarship kid on national television? It happens every day at every program in the country. Get over it.

Just because Kelly lost it on some upper-tier kids who were underperforming in a pivotal game does not make him a heel. It makes him a leader of men... Perform, or get out of the way.

I have a feeling that a lot of this stems from alums saying, "This isn't the Notre Dame Way....Rabble...Rabble....Rabble....) To that, I call bullcrap. So, if you want to start Neg Repping someone....you can start with me. It's about time someone holds underperforming individuals/ADULTS accountable. These guys are one step from the "real world".... Would they be treated any differently in they under perform in the their professional life??? The fact of the matter is, they'd get fired....or replaced, which is what happened here today with the naming of Tommy Rees the starting quarterback.

Go Irish!!! Give 'em hell, Tommy Rees.

I couldn't agree more, well put. Too much coddling in this day and age! When these guys leave the University, there won't be anyone to hold their hand. If they haven't learned to adapt and execute, they will be in for a rude awakening in a few years when they're in the real world. Big deal if a coach gets in their face, they should have gotten that from at least one coach in high school.

I'm not in your discussion with Whiskey, just pointing out there are a lot of things that aren't "wrong" but should be kept off camera.

maybe being on camera while doing some of these things is what makes them wrong (i.e. #1 on your list.)

To add on to HCTI.... it's quite funny to me that people argue that student athletes should get paid $$$ for competing on the football field... and then people call them "kids" and "teenagers" and act like they can't handle getting yelled at by their coach.

Just to be clear I don't think these "kids" should be paid to play football.

You've never once argued that you simply want Kelly to stop yelling at kids on camera because it makes the University look bad, or whatever. You've been arguing all along that it's per se unacceptable to yell at kids like Kelly does. From his carefully hedged comments on the subject, it's pretty clear that he doesn't agree with you.

actually I began posting in this thread arguing that it was not effective coaching to belittle players because it does not motivate them. However, as the thread progressed and people began defending the devine right of D1 college football coaches to scream at players until their head turned purple, I felt it was my duty to point out the stupidity of that argument so I decided to point out how silly it was. I have consistanly said in this thread and the other that was closed that screaming at kids was inappropriate ESPECIALLY ON TV. Feel free to go back and read my posts before you tell me what I posted.

I really could give a **** if he yells at them or not, it is what he says while he is yelling at them that is important and truth be told none of us know what he said.

This is incorrect. Getting in a player's face can motivate them. I'm not sure if you've played high school or college football before, but it works for some players. It may not work for all, but it motivated me. I was a good player in games, but I practiced poorly. One day I was going through the motions, not giving much effort in blocking, and the coach got in my face after a busted play. The next three plays I pancaked the end I was blocking. It can be used as a motivational tool, don't discount it's uses. Besides, by the college level if you don't have thick skin, it's time you develop it. The real world isn't always so nice after you finish school.

Again, I don't care if it was the F word in the context of Catch the ****ing Ball Next time. That is fine by me.

If it was you ****ing suck and are ****ing mentally retarded. Then I would probably have an issue.

The F word isn't always bad, it is the context in which it is used that can make it unacceptable.

When a coach has to start to worry about his coaching tactics because he is on TV is when we will have a serious problem. I bet BK will drop less F bombs. That will be his way of watching his emotions on TV.

Having just watched BK's presser.... He was obviously annoyed by the question of his actions. I don't blame him one bit.

i wonder if he was taking a shot at NBC for showing him on camera so much during the meltdown... you know ESPN is gonna be all over it. they can't wait. they might as well have a "Kelly-Cam" goin... Notre Dame brings the ratings during games AND SportsCenter.

... The green light to strip a kid of his dignity is not part of a football scholarship.

No, it isn't. That was pretty low of Frank Leahy to pull Johnny Lattner out of the game after he made all those fumbles in '52, wasn't it? After all, Lattner was an All-American. Leahy then added to the indignity by making Lattner walk around with a football taped to his hand so he wouldn't lose it.

Lattner's dignity was so damaged permanently damaged he won the Heisman the next year.

Personally, I'd rather receive the 15 second *** chewing.

I cannot agree more. Sick of hearing these thin skinned nancys who never played sports or were never held accountable for screwing up. Get over it, this is football, not syncronized swimming.

Right on. If you noticed when the line of questioning regarding his demeanor began, BK asked the reporter to be specific, saying something to the effect of "a time when I struck or put my hands on a player?" Meaning, lighten up.

This is football time not friend time. BK made very clear that Theo and Jonas and the other players that made mistakes would continue to be needed. I'm sure he was very explicit with those players in conveying those sentiments as well. The cameras just weren't on him.

Freezer pops for everyone!!!

Hayes & Knight

Hayes & Knight

It seems to me what I read here is Woody Hayes-Bobby Knight defenses of Kelly. We all should be real concerned that Kelly's oubursts do not reach their levels. Apparently Kelly has a long history of cooking off and I clearly took note of him on National Television last year chewing out players and was upset by it then. Hayes and Knight were only defended for so long. Kelly put on a tirade spectacle Saturday and now media will dog him expecting he is another Hayes or Knight. I say this with no joy I want Kelly to succeed at Notre Dame.
