It just makes me sick to think that if one of the 10-15 mindless mistakes is not made, that game goes into overtime.. or we win.
I was working on a list earlier.
1(a). Gray's fumble (-3)
1(b). Gray's fumble bounces perfectly to allow for a return TD (-7)
2. Mike Floyd holding (-7)
3. Crist interception (-3*)
4. Riddick botched punt (-3)
5. Rees/TJ Jones interception (-7)
6. Ruffer missed chip-shot FG (-3)
7. Gary Gray late hit/pass interference penalties (-4)
That isn't even taking into account all the other stupid penalties and turnovers that COULD HAVE made a difference in the game. These are just the individual UNFORCED ERRORS that led DIRECTLY to points being scored by USF or not scored by ND. A total of 24 points, altogether. And this number was not calculated by assuming a best case scenario for ND, but the likely outcome of the possession in the absence of the unforced error highlighted.
In a 3 point loss, clearly any single one of these mistakes would have made the difference in the game (even the 3 point swings would have likely led to a ND victory in regulation, because they would not have gone for two after the Wood TD if they were not down by 10 at that point).
* this (-3) was not included in the calculation of -24 points, because I counted the Wood TD that was taken off by Floyd's hold. Obviously, this is an either/or situation.
