They didn't have their starting QB and we didn't have ours. That's a level playing field IMO.

So it's ok to talk about how Teo is going to knock Denard out, but when our D puts your starting QB out and you don't have a reliable back up it's not fair...

I dont think anyone was crying its not fair. People have simply been trying to stress that it would have been a different game had Crist not gone face first into the endzone... And time after time, michigan fans i have spoken to (not you specifically) refuse to acknowlege that the outcome of that game probably would have been different had Crist not gone out of the game.

Not sure what you point was by bringing up that people talk about Manti eating Denard though?

Bottom line is no matter how much fact you bring to the table, or how many stats, or how much intelligence...Michigan is still arrogant. Michigan will still be arrogant. Michigan will continue to play their games and not beat the big 10 teams, or ranked opponents, and think they are kind of the mountain when they beat WMU, and even when OSU hand their asses to them in a bucket, they'll still use the ever famous Michigan fan line "At least we beat ND in 2010".

I can't wait to see ND grind the Wolverines into the turf.

Feel free to show proof of this, because I've never seen any forum poster hang our season on beating ND. Most Michigan fans will say that our O was good, our D was awful, and our special teams was abysmal.

Then I suggest you pass that message along to the rest of the michigan fans. I can introduce you to some if you like.

Football Outsiders' 2011 Michigan Preview is excellent. In fact, they all are. If you're curious or anxious about any upcoming game, go to google and type "Bill Connelly *insert school* 2011 preview". You won't be disappointed.

Strong recruiting averages ... tons of returning starters ... an encouraging-for-2011 YPP margin ... the fact that our numbers don't like Nebraska nearly as much as everybody else ... you should just go ahead and get used to the idea now: when our Football Outsiders Almanac 2011 projections are officially finalized and released, there is a decent chance that Michigan will be projected at or near the top of the Legends Division. I'm not saying it's what I personally think will happen, but it's easy to see what the numbers might be seeing here. The Big Ten has a bit of a power void with Ohio State's issues and Wisconsin's losses, and with Michigan finishing the year with home games against Nebraska and Ohio State, there's a decent chance they could hold their title destiny in their hands.

Or, you know, not. Denard Robinson could take to a more "pro style" offense as well as Brad Smith did (he's already a better passer than Smith, though, so he's got that going for him), the offense could freeze up when Robinson attempts to go against his instincts, and Mattison might throw up his hands (and his lunch) in realizing that there's nothing he can do with this defense. But again, one can see what the numbers might like here. Great offense plus can't-be-any-worse defense plus power void? Count Michigan as a Big Ten sleeper, though you can feel free to ignore I said this if they go 5-7. The whole "Michigan as sleeper" thing is a bit off-putting, though; this is not a program that is supposed to be anything but a favorite. Good luck, Coach Hoke.

MGoPoints: 24068 Let's be honest: we were very fortunate to win both of those games. They were coinflips. We trailed with a minute to go in each one - and the second time, it was despite the fact that ND had played without its starting QB for nearly half the game. I don't think we can draw many useful lessons from those games, other than that Charlie Weis is a crappy game-manager and that Nate Montana is awful.

We should be better than last year, but so will they. They finished last season much more strongly than we did, and on a neutral field I'd give them the edge. Given the great home atmosphere we should have, I'd say it's 50-50
.
^I agree with this guy
There are a few reasonable scUM fans on that board, but the rest are just completely insane.

Watching Oregon vs. LSU, Oregon just fumbled. Chip Kelley knows nothing. Fire HIM! Its all his bad coaching!

I'm convinced we beat the skunkbears. Can't wait to see what the line is.

I always respect UPSH

but i totally and completely disagree.... I see NOTHING that says we should expect a win in their house... it can happen... but I'm not expecting it...

Good lord man, you should take a rest for the night. Wake up tomorrow and rewatch the game. If you still feel that our season is lost after rewatching, then fine. But, we outplayed usf by alot. Our offense had 4 really terrible plays. Our defense had one bad drive. Other than that, we looked pretty good. There's obviously cause for concern with the turnovers, but I'm sure Kelly will fix that. Our special teams need work, or maybe just new players (Bridnza, Goodman).

Im not reliving that at all, and my fear is ok we looked good against the bulls, Michigan is going to be a much much tougher defense combined with the crowd we wont look that good. I dunno until I see reason to think otherwise I just dunno, last eyar when we beat Utah and USC I was there but after this can u blame me?

It's not Michigan's D or the crowd to worry about. It's a dude named Denard.

Not as many mistakes, but defense won't have the same performance with Robinson attacking them. I see it as another close loss.

One good thing, maybe we won't be favored! Somehow win this and all is forgiven in my book!

PEOPLE NEED TO CALM DOWN.

Notre Dame fell all over themselves tonight and still had a damn fine defensive performance and 508 yards of offense! THE IRISH WILL BE FINE. Have any of you coached or studied the game a damn day in your life, or are you a simpleton like ESPN wants you to be, simply buying and selling the hype all of the freakin' time.

You are NEVER as bad as you look, and you are NEVER as good as you look. As was the case when Notre Dame looked invincible in 2006, thrashing Penn State 41-17 in the second week, only to stomped the next week by Michigan 21-47.

The ONLY people who stopped the Irish today, were the Irish. That is a better problem to have. This isn't like they were outmanned by USC, they lost the game themselves via their own mistakes. You can fix mistakes overnight, you cannot fix talent. The talent was clearly there.

Hell, this wasn't even an X's and O's issue. Kelly's play calling was fine (maybe a bit too much running in the first half, but then again the corp wasn't catching jackshit), and Diaco made the proper adjustments--at first every read option and bubble screen was ripping off huge chunks, but that only lasted for a half (if that).

Just f*cking relax.

What makes you think Michigan's defense will be better than USF's?

Do ya think??? lol

So what, exactly, cannot be fixed by a coaching staff? This wasn't a talent gap from years prior; this wasn't even an offense putting up 508 but the defense letting up 400-600--no the defense did well.

It was inconsistency. Just think, if it was that pathetic, look how high the ceiling is! This team should've score 40 points! Crist's mistakes have no impact on the future (assuming Rees is the guy); Jones not turning around is already fixed--you only have to make that mistake once; etc etc.

The punting sucks, and Riddick had an absolutely dreadful game. I think Turk will continue his horrible punting, but Riddick has no where to go but up. Let's be honest though, he is meant to receive easy catches horizontally more than vertically. Floyd stretches the field vertically, Riddick stretches it horizontally. At least that's how I'd play it.

The only thing about Michigan that scares me is the atmosphere and Robinson. The Irish need to grow up quickly, no doubting that, but I trust Kelly. It'll be a tough game, but they are not out of this one.

Just checked out Mgoblog to see what they thought about their D today and this is what Most agreed on

-They had trouble covering Western Michigan receivers especially on screens and most are pretty woried about Mike Floyd after seeing his dominant performance today

-had trouble mostly with off tackle runs

-Appear to be bringing more pressure than last year but it is against Western Michigan

-overall felt that the D has made progress but the non insane posters agree it is far from great

I would basically agree with that assessment. The first WM possession was very discouraging... But after that, they only allowed 3 points, and showed some play-making abiity. The D is better but still has a long way too go.

Dude, you are such an embarrassment. This is not a mod speaking, this is just another guy speaking. You're an embarrassment to men all over. How many years do you do this to yourself? I mean, I can understand saying we could lose (I don't think we will, bt we definitely could, no doubt), but every single one of your posts has such a morbid finality to it that it's just embarrassing to watch as a man.

Take your skirt off for once and act like a man with a spine, or at the very least take off your gothic clothes, your emo makeup and your black fingernails and pretend you have a sac. You made like what, 30 posts tonight and hundreds overall, and they all say the same thing. Do yourself a favor and stop watching if you makes you that depressed...

I agree with many of your points in this thread. However, I will point out another very noticeable issue. LB play. Going into the year we all thought it was a strength, but the ILB opposite of Te'o needs somebody to step up, and the team had issues with outside containment all game long. That falls squarely on the outside LBs.

I slept on it. I woke up this morning and faced Sportscenter like a man and made it through the highlights without any tears. And I've come to a conclusion:

We are going to be fine. This is a good football team. A sloppy team yesterday, but good. Very good. Tell me seeing Tommy Rees tear up USF in the 2nd half didn't have you drooling and seeing our D give up one, yes, ONE defensive touchdown. And ~240 yards to a very good offense? This D might not be as dominant as we hoped, but it sure isn't anything to be ashamed of. The offense looked dominant at times, absolutely GASHING USF in the 2nd half. The turnovers can be fixed: Fumbles can often be corrected. Crist's INT was an absolute disgrace, but guess what? He isn't our starter anymore. Rees' first INT wasn't his fault either. The way I see it, we outplayed USF on all but 5 plays, and at the end of the day that's very encoraging.

We will beat UM this weekend. Take it to the bank.
