Clausen vs. Newton

I'm not opposed to the theory that maybe Clausen just can't cut it, but that video didn't convince me. I saw some rookie mistakes, but I also saw an absurdly porous OL, a couple passes that bounced off his receivers' hands, and a couple impressive throws.

The odds of a 1st year rookie QB not sucking behind such a terrible OL are astronomically bad. You can see it in Jimmy's eyes; he (justifiably) had zero faith that his OL would give him more than 2s before getting sacked. Without faith in his OL, there's very little chance for him to develop confidence, get into a rhythm with his receivers, etc.

The odds of success for any QB in the NFL are bad, and Jimmy was thrown into the worst conceivable situation. How you can point to that video and claim "He's had his chance" is beyond me.

I agree. With all the pressure Clausen was getting he actually didn't make too many poor choices. Not only was he accurate in his throws but he threw the ball away when there wasn't a better option. That team sucks, bad. If he lands on a team with talent I expect him to challenge for the starting spot and succeed. Man, the vikings would have been a PERFECT fit for Clausen. Wish he would have gone there.

Considering the Panthers Offensive Line is even worse then the Colts, I really don't think anyone outside of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and maybe a couple of others would have any chance of success with the Panthers.

At this point I don't want Jimmy to start in the opener or even the first few games, because he is in a no win situation. He would get destroyed by the opposing team and in turn get destroyed even more by the Panther fans who would be calling for his head (even more then they currently do). The only way he has any remote chance of success is if Newton starts and the Panther fans can actually see how bad he is.

vs. Giants
Newton: 8/19, 134 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 66.6 rating
Clausen: 4/7, 69 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 90.8 ratings

@ Dolphins
Newton: 7/14, 66 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 63.4 rating
Clausen: 9/15, 69 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 71.2 rating

@ Bengals
Newton: 6/19, 75 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 44.8 rating
Clausen: 4/7, 35 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 70.5 rating

Total
Newton: 21/52 (40%), 275 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT
Clausen: 17/29 (59%), 173 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Seems to me like Jimmy hasn't even been given a fair chance to win the spot. I hope he gets traded somewhere where he can sit and learn for a year and then compete for a starting job next year on a real team. I'll take him up here in Buffalo and have him sit behind Harvard grad Ryan Fitzpatrick for the season.

From what I saw in the game, Cam looks more like a starting QB than Clausen. He was on and off with his throws making some really crappy ones and some really amazing ones. I think he is maturing quite well considering the time constraints on the lockout.

Way too early to tell so you can't really call him a bust or a good NFL QB at this point.

I enjoy the stats. Even more telling than stats are the number of scoring drives each qb managed. Clausen wins in that category.

The hardest comparison point is that Newton is with the first team playing against the first team while Clausen is with the second team going against the second team. It's a bit apples to oranges, so I hope we can see Clausen with more first team reps. This could happen.

Biggest problem: neither plays well on the team right now. Clausen plays very conservative, which may stem from the poor OL. Just not a good situation.

Clausen needs to get traded. Look at how much magically better Quinn is now that he isn't getting ****ed around with by crappy management. Yeah, he's not starting... but he's progressing.

This reminds me of when the Chargers draft Phillip Rivers to replace "bad" Drew Brees... then Brees played really well and they got him out of town for a good pick. The same thing needs to happen for Clausen except for obviously going for a later round pick. If Jason Campbell, one of the worst QBs I have ever seen, can be given a shot time after time after time despite failing repeatedly... Clausen deserves at least one fair go.

It is still premature in judging Cam as a QB but that was a pretty impressive performance, especially for the $hitty a$$ Panthers.

sCam will be given a long leash and he is their only hope with a poreous O-line. This is a complete mulligan season and they are probably better off losing and getting another high draft pick. No one seriously expects them to be good and at least sCam will put some butts in the seats.

Clausen could do well with a team that can actually create and hold a pocket for more than half a second but who knows if he will ever have that chance.

Some wheres like The giants would be good for Jimmy. They have good o-line and running game. My skins don't have a QB but i am not sold on him being a starter in the NFL.

I don't know if he's a bust yet, but he definitely doesn't have the transcendent ability that Cam has that enables him to put his awful team in position to win the game. With a good supporting cast, I think Jimmy could be good.

I don't believe Clausen has the leadership skills or confidence to be a NFL starter, most likely a career backup.

Word from the Charlotte beat writers is that Jimmy never put in the extra work to try to excel. Didn't stay late watching films, and failed to encourage his teammates to follow him when he was starting last season. From the onset, Cam worked his butt off and everyone on that team just gravitated to him as a leader. He studies film constantly, practices hard and has a drive that you want to see in a leader. If Jimmy can see this in action up close and try to practice it himself, then he may have a shot with another team. Or, he may simply be content being a backup for Carolina and earning a nice paycheck. Really depends upon his motivation and drive.

I heard the exact opposite...Foxs staff never helped him grow and the staff never backed him so the players didnt.

Actually the player's did accept Clausen initially, but he wouldn't accept them. Acting anti social, stuck up, and as he knew everything. That's where the Steve Smith "He ain't at Notre Dame anymore" came from.

I think the "He ain't at Notre Dame anymore" comment from Smith actually came from his poor play during a particular game. Clausen was accepted initially but in fairness to him, he was thrown to the wolves w/ a very poor team and and even worse O-line. Living here in Charlotte, I hear all of the negative things said about Clausen. He gets no respect from the team, the management nor the city. Everyone blasts Clausen. It is safe to say that he will never see the field w/ Carolina unless something catastrophic happens. He doesn't even travel with the team on away games and is in street clothes for home games. I pulled for him like nobody's business but I don't ever think you will see him as a starter in the NFL.
