Spence is being recruited as a OLB by ND. Didnt know if you knew that...however, when you mentioned the DL I assumed you thought that he was a DE. ;)

After the events over the last 24 hours or so, I don't exactly know what he's being recruited as! Haha!

Yeah, I think BK and staff like him as an OLB, but I think he could still be a great DE (particularly in our 4-3 sets). This is part of why I'm confused about the "No" to Schutt (I mean I get why he, specifically as a NG, may have been turned down). If Jones commits, then Spence wants to (particularly as a DE), do we turn him down?

But also like I said earlier, who knows what his expectations and the coaches expectations will be come NSD.

Almost positive Spence is actually being recruited as a DE by our coaches contrary to what many believe.

If we end up with Day, Jones, AND Spence...well I'd be just as happy with class of DL as last year's! Actually, even happier-- it means the staff could bring in elite DL right after bringing in an elite DL class! And I'd also say, "Tommy who???"

How close is Spence with Jones?

What if Spence goes to PSU (likely scenario) and tells Jarron via a video posted to his Facebook page to come to Penn State and win National Championships with him.

That's a good point. No idea there.

Yea I think he's being recruited as a DE too but I also think they're telling him what he wants to hear

I don't think this coaching staff would do that to a recruit. The way things have been it seems they tell them straight up what's going on.

ND is without question recruiting him as a DE.

That's correct that he has no interest in playing OLB whether it's the 3-4 or the 4-3.

As for recruiting ND is very much in the thick of it and early on there were more than a few that thought ND stood a good chance to get him. The reason for the lack of talk about Spence and ND is because he's shut his recruitment down months ago to live his life.

There is no question that he's going to be an 3-4 DE if he comes to ND as Coach Kelly & Co. see him as a guy that the can rotate with Lynch as there "speed" DE whereas they see Jarron Jones as someone they can rotate with Tuitt at the "power" DE.

Some see the recruiting profiles on these kids and while the articles on these site can be quite good there numbers as in 40 times, weight and height aren't as they are apparently lost in the shuffle of it at all.

The reason I mention this because I swear some see those measurables and base there opinion of where one can play.

Spence is going to play around 250 this season and think over the year in college that he will max out at around 270 to 275.

So I think that should get some people on board that he's going to be more than 4-3 DE that he will be more in the mold of a Aaron Lynch than a 4-3 rush end.

Plus remember ND doesn't run a true 3-4 it's more of hybrid defense 3-4/4-3 with plenty of packages that feature the different defenses.

Do you have any sorces for this because I thought I saw a ESPN article where he mentioned some schools and ND wasnt one.

ESPN Insider says Notre Dame is among the top program he is considering; along with Michigan, PSU, OSU, and Pitt. Granted, it's speculation, but I trust their stuff.

Ok thanks for the info. Only team that scares me their is Michigan so we may very well get him.

ND is very much in the mix but as I said before he's halted his recruitment for sometime now and there is no new info out there. Anything new at this point is likely just the writers opinion and not based on anything Spence has said.

Nice!

I hope he doesn't get caught up in the Penn State hype, they could easily start the season out 8-1 and thus ranked near the top ten. Although I don't think I should worry about Penn State being able to keep an elite recruit away from Diaco's tractor beam.

In my humble opinion he is Penn State's to lose. Like you said though, if it comes down to us and Penn State, I like our chances 11 out of 10 times.

The 3-4 D is an issue but he has visited twice on his own dime already.

I think we can use Lynch as a perfect example if he plays and plays well why Spence should come

Well, not exactly. It would also mean that he would have Lynch ahead of him for a minimum of two years, no?

As for Penn State, as I think he's theirs to lose, this is their schedule:

vs Indiana State
vs Alabama
@ Temple
vs Eastern Michigan
@ Indiana
vs Iowa
vs Purdue
@Northwestern
vs Illinois

---BYE---
vs Nebraska
@ Ohio State
@ Wisconsin

There is a 90% chance that they start out 8-1. They will probably end up 9-3 and ranked around #20.

Mark this guy done as another recruit Notre Dame needs to have a great season for.

IMO they will drop atleat one of @northwestern and Iowa. Talking to PSU fans from my area they aren't real confident and feal a 7-5 season.

Im from the Harrisburg Area and McDevitt hasnt send a kid up to Penn State since 2001. It would be good to start a pipeline again in the Central Pa area. Ricky Watters, Larry Conjar and Raki Nelson are McDevitt grads that played for Notre Dame.

I too think that they will lose to Iowa. They will most likely find a way to lose a few more too, just because they are PSU.
