I mean... we're seriously debating the definition of "swagger"? Really? Really?

Well it's become evident that some people consider swagger a good thing and some consider it bad. We're just discussing what those people think swagger really means on the playing field. It relates to Notre Dame football as much as anything on the Irish Envy front page.

Be careful YOU may be accused of a motivational cliché.

My definition of Swagger
- Relaxed Focus
- Team before self
- When the game is on the line, he steps up and wants to be the MAN.
- Quit confidence
Swagger contains an element of leadership so I would like to share Colin Powell’s rules of leadership:

LESSON ONE
"Being responsible sometimes means pissing people off."

LESSON TWO
"The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership."

LESSON THREE
"Don't be buffaloed by experts and elites.

LESSON FOUR
"Don't be afraid to challenge the pros, even in their own backyard."

LESSON FIVE
"Never neglect details. When everyone's mind is dulled or distracted the leader must be doubly vigilant."

LESSON SIX
"You don't know what you can get away with until you try."

LESSON SEVEN
"Keep looking below surface appearances. Don't shrink from doing so (just) because you might not like what you find."

LESSON EIGHT
"Organization doesn't really accomplish anything. Plans don't accomplish anything, either. Theories of management don't much matter. Endeavours succeed or fail because of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds."

LESSON NINE
"Organization charts and hence titles count for next to nothing."

LESSON TEN
"Never let your ego get so close to your position that when your position goes, your ego goes with it."

LESSON ELEVEN
"Fit no stereotypes. Don't chase the latest management fads. The situation dictates which approach best accomplishes the team's mission."

LESSON TWELVE
"Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier."

LESSON THIRTEEN
"Powell's Rules for Picking People"—Look for intelligence and judgment and, most critically, a capacity to anticipate, to see around corners. Also look for loyalty, integrity, a high energy drive, a balanced ego and the drive to get things done."

LESSON FOURTEEN
(Borrowed by Powell from Michael Korda): "Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand."

LESSON FIFTEEN
Part I: "Use the formula P=40 to 70, in which P stands for the probability of success and the numbers indicate the percentage of information acquired." Part II: "Once the information is in the 40 to 70 range, go with your gut."

LESSON SIXTEEN
"The commander in the field is always right and the rear echelon is wrong, unless proved otherwise."

LESSON SEVENTEEN
"Have fun in your command. Don't always run at a breakneck pace. Take leave when you've earned it. Spend time with your families."

LESSON EIGHTEEN
"Command is lonely."

more detail if you want to read more.

I wasn't taking a swipe at you for starting this thread, killer. It's just emblematic of the off-season around here.

Won't it be nice in 4-5 days when we finally have something substantive to discuss?

oh i figured you didn't mean anything by it, but just in case did mean something by it, i was getting ready for a throwdown.

no hard feelings here. i can't wait for the season either. i get silly imagining what must go through a running back's head when he looks over the top of our d-line.

it's interesting seeing what people think swagger means, though. i don't think anyone here has shared my idea of swagger yet.

Everytime I hear the word "swagger," I think of these guys. They don't march, they swagger. And they can, because they are some of the toughest SOB's in the world, and they know it. Just like ND's football team should be.

Suppose I'll throw my opinion in...

Seems like "swagger" is often confused for showboating or celebrating.

As per NDSouthwest's first definition, that seems like being "clutch" to me... (I could be wrong)

What I personally think of swagger as: Lining up at ANY position on the field/court/pitch/etc... And the guy across from you can look at you and KNOW that you're going to beat him, without you even saying anything. Here's the "swagger" part.. While you beat said opponent, you do so comfortably, and looking damn good.

I don't think it entails stylish endzone celebrations, but if Robert Hughes were to have ran over a USC safety on his way to the endzone, and maybe shot a glance back... as if to say "don't get in my way again"..

That's swag to me

I'm in the camp (no, not you, Acamp) that attaches a negative connotation to the word "swagger." I associate it with braggadocio. As in the Miami Hurricanes thuggery years.

I much prefer a quiet confidence that stems from competence and exceptional performance. Celebrate your asses off once the final gun sounds and you've won the game.

A single tackle, reception or run rarely carries the day. Stay humble and grateful for your opportunity. Don't boast, brag or taunt. Do what is expected of you, do it well, and do it again and again again as needed.

Do not [not, not, not!] act as though a solitary play is going to win the you the Super Bowl (and send you on your way to Disney World) in what may well turn out to be a losing effort.

Stay calm and Play Like A Champion Today.

As much as I hate to say it, Emmitt Smith in Dallas had that swagger. He would score a TD, hand the ball off, take his helmet off, and head to the sidelines. Another guy with that swagger is Brian Urlacher. That is the type of swagger I want to see from ND players.

I boycott the word swagger.

I will add my thought process however.

I punch myself in the face because no one can hit better than I do.

bingo. that's swagger to me. that compiled with everyone hating (or loving) you, but not being able to explain why. you just have something about you that people notice.

my original example, golden tate, is the epitome of swagger to me. he knew he was going to beat you and make you look like a fool, and the defender knew it was going to happen. and try as he might, it always did. hell, half the time refs couldn't figure out a way to beat the guy.

my friends either loved golden or hated him. none of them knew why. but i feel the ones who appreciated him most were fans of teams he tormented. you'd be surprised how many people at purdue would say "i hate notre dame, but golden tate is a pimp" or something of the like. he just had something you couldn't put your finger on.

and the way he imposed his dominance before and after each play was incredible. take the usc game in 2009. no one had scored a single passing touchdown on usc all year up to the point where golden scored two on them. and both were targeted right at super star taylor mays. mays thought he could stop golden, golden knew he couldn't. the second touchdown wasn't only over taylor mays, it was through him. and after mays tried to lay a big hit on golden and was flattened by a guy half his size, golden put his arms on his hips and looked at him as if to say "seriously?"

that's swagger to me. someone with a lot of swagger doesn't induce indifference. it's hatred or love.

also golden's beard. somewhere in that supreme beard was the actual definition of swagger. but we'll never know what it is, because no one can catch him.

Swagger, the best kind.

Also, why didn't anyone ever make a Samardzija highlight video with good music? :/

That kid certainly had a bunch of swagger. I am still surprised he decided to be a pitcher rather than go to the NFL.

I kind of agree with Neutered on this one.....The word "swagger" makes me VOMIT !!! I think the class, poise and envy that this football program has draws enough attention. Charging out of the Tunnel , The students with there helmets off singing the Alma matter with the students after the game, "The band" Other schools wish they had what Notre Dame has.
SPIRIT IS A BETTER DESCRIPTION. other schools try.....but they cant duplicate it.

KEEP THE FAITH !!!

The great Notre Dame teams had it under the 3 coaches that in my life I was able to see. Lou/Ara/Devine had guys that when they went into the arena they had an auora of victory shown thru the cold fish eyed stare that no matter how much you jump up and down and do the pre game dance we are going to win this game. It cant be taught, it cant be bought, it must be developed thru mental/physical practice and coaches who prepare you for the arena. You earn this quality thru what you do before for that time in the arena. Like Tyson said when he was champ-everyone has a plan (dance) until the get hit in the mouth.
