I don't know fellas...I don't see a kid coming BACK to South Bend to talk to the Head Coach unless ND is in the final schools in contention. IMO he is returning to solidify his commitment to ND. Mark it!

That is my gut feeling as well. Just something about this whole thing makes me think this same way. I Could be wrong...., but again I might be right. I like this kid and really want him. He would really help us out in a real position of need and has a ton of talent and potential to make us better. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

I feel good about our chances here. I don't think he would say he had a wonderful visit, give a four part article right after the visit to an ND website showing he ND is a perfect fit for him, and then the day after the last part of the article comes out, schedule a date for a decision to different school. After reading the article of how he was raised, I don't think this is the case. He's all irish.

I have no idea what he'll do. But I tend to think rising high school seniors don't spend 10 hours in the car (during his precious summer break, no less) to be polite and go tell a coach, "Thanks, but no thanks."

I feel what you're saying but even That I think along these lines as well I stil worry. I want to think he is Irish but there are so many factors that can still come into play. I have a good feeling about him but I am also trying my best to being realistic while at the same time being hopeful. This kid like so many others during this recruiting process are under enormous pressure. It's Anyones guess at this point. Hope he's Irish when it's all said and done. Pardon the grammar as I am using a phone.

Did he get a chance to talk to Kelly during his visit, or was Kelly off campus someplace alse recruiting during that first visit? He may have been fed something negative (by Pitt) about Notre Dame or the number of carries he could expect at Notre Dame?

My suspicion is that Notre Dame is a serious player here, but he wants to know that he is going to be doing more than just blocking for the next four years. There is also the possibility that he just wants an opportunity to talk face to face about committing someplace else. It certainly would be a rare and classy act for a young man to deliver the message (that he is going somewhere else) in person.

If that is the case, I would have to tip my hat to him and respect his decision.

Eh, I don't know about that. Maybe he really likes ND and the staff and feels it would be polite and more respectable to tell Kelly face to face he has decide to cut his list of three (ND, PSU, and Pitt) to two (PSU and Pitt).

IMO that would only make sense if he had ever even met BK before. Since he has never met BK, he would be much more likely to only meet with/talk to his lead recruiter if this were the case.

True. I forgot he had not met BK yet. Still, crazier things have happened, yes?

My reading of the situation is, he's been leaning ND since his visit, and probably even intended to commit here when he said he'd announce Aug. 7, but the commitments of his teammates to Pitt, and sharing that experience with them, introduced more uncertainty into his mind, such that he at least wants to meet Kelly to seal the deal for coming to ND. I think so long as Kelly works his magic as usual during Mahone's visit, we're going to get him.

If we are playing read the tea leaves, this sounds pretty logical. I would only step back and say that 0the meeting with Kelly is more open-ended.

It must be funny reading this stuff if you are Will. You are either like, "that's about it," or "where the heck did this random guy come up with this?"

Those Coach D. stories are like crack for me. I now really want to land Mahone. I hope we do.

This is exactly how I feel things are going down as well, but I guess only time will tell.

By the looks of it, if he is choosing between these two schools then I would gather that the quality of the institution overall is a big factor. Quite frankly, this makes me like the kid even more. Lets get BK in front of him and get him committed!

Mahone contacted a staff member of BGI today asking about who was visiting this month. Its possible that the news of Garmon visiting might be worrying him a bit about losing his spot in the class. Also said he will be making another to ND this month

Good info dude. Would be great if we got both Mahone and Marshall before the season starts.... but I really doubt that happens.

Good point about Garmon visiting, but I still doubt that he gets an offer. Plus, when I talked to him in school he seemed like Notre Dame was nothing special to him. I just hope Mahone realizes how good a fit ND is for him.

Nice info...I hope Mahone still has his spot in the class. Him and Marshall would be a scary tandem.

Thanks for the information. I really hope this guy chooses us. It would be real nice to have at least one RB committed before the season starts.

William Mahone would be a great addition to this recruiting class. With our lack of depth at running back and the possibility of moving McDaniels or Atkinson to the slot if they are not needed at running back , Mahone would fill a big void. And there would definitely be room for him and another running back in this class.

Notre Dame needs you as much as you need them, William. When you decide to give a verbal commitment, I hope it is to Notre Dame. A Notre Dame degree can play a major role in giving you options that not everyone has available.

Maybe but I don't think so as they are 2 very different types of RB's and ND need quite a few in the next few classes.

Garmon is a speed RB whereas Mahone is looked at as a powerback with great receiving skills that has good speed.

@SWiltfong247 (Steve Wiltfong)

Youngstown (Ohio) Fitch RB William Mahone will take officials to Penn State for the Alabama game and Notre Dame for the Michigan State game

Mahone wants to go see PSU get slaughtered by Alabama.

I'm pretty sure the staff is upfront with the guys and how they'll be used. Mahone has a good change of pace. I think Kelly will make him watch Gray against USF. Gray also has some speed to him. Check out that 40 yd run he broke last year. The staff wants a guy who can block, break tackles, and run the ball up the middle. IMO this type of RB is more crucial for this offense with our schedule than the change of pace guy that can burn holes in defenses. Kelly learned that the big 10 schedule we have requires a power runner.

I think well see Gray in there on power/big sets and they'll use Cierre when running 4 or 5 wide and let him fly against less linebackers and safeties dropping into coverage.

Sorry, I needed a break from studying for statistics.

Sidenote: I can't say I'm worried about RB this recruiting class. There's too much drama about it already. We have Cierre as the burner. Gray as the APB type. We can slot in Atkinson and McDaniel when the guys need a rest. But remember, we are a pass first offense, not Alabama. They aren't smashing it up the middle first and second down. So we don't need to rotate due to fatigue. Roberson (who is legit in yr 3 of NCAA) is back next year. McDaniel is completely underrated at the moment and by his 3rd year could prove a lot of you wrong. Atkinson (I'm hoping) will be moved back to WR next season and there will be 2/3 guys to backfill it that probably won't play for a season or two.

Just my two cents. Feel free to debate/question me. I'll respond when I can.

I completely agree with you. I never thought that runningback was as dire as some would have you think. I think even if cam is servicable and we land one of these 3 elite running backs this year we will be in pretty good shape.
