I meant no offense. I just don't get the use of it on the interweb. I don't think I've ever heard anyone drop a "methinks" during a conversation in person, but its definitely a thing on message boards. When I hear it (read it), I just picture the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. (Again, no offense. Believe me, its far from personal. Just throwing this out there.)

Yeah, I agree with all of this. (Except for the use of "interweb(s)". I can't wait until that stops)

Does anyone ever get the feeling that some kids just have it and some don't? Joe Montana was the 3rd string QB at the start of the 1977 season.... The rest is history...

Tommy Rees has shown nothing but wins up to this point.... Some kids just find a way to win ball games. Now obviously Rees has much better defensive play on his side those last four games but is that better defensive play partly to the fact that he was starting and the team responded???

These are just some thoughts that I have had and am curious as to how some of you feel about Rees and the success he has had as compared to which one of our quarterbacks is "fundamentally" the best QB...

Rees didn't win the games for ND. The defense not giving up anything is what won the games. Football isn't a one-man sport. Our defense was insane at the end of the season. Rees played pretty horrible against USC and we still won because the defense was incredible and Robert Hughes put the team on his back like he was Greg Jennings.

We are ignoring the obvious package where Aaron Lynch gets the snap and runs the option with Big Lou Nix sweeping. Big Lou is already politicking for that on the goal line --- "The Fast Fridge" is the codeword.
I believe that Pitt had a formation with their two ton back and a 300# lineman in the backfield.
I have never understood why we haven't used this type of offense against Navy.
Last year: Hughes and Stewart
This year: Lynch and Nix!

I really do not have too many concerns, yes USF might have an above average defense when it comes to their CB's and safeties. I truly believe though if we go with the same offensive scheme, short passes with the always reliable draw plays the Irish will do just fine. I just hope Coach Kelly will come to his senses and starts Rees. Rees taught us that we don't need to long ball or big plays each possession. I think the Irish might start off the game a little slow but will get into a smooth groove once all nerves are settled! Hopefully I'll be at the game that day as well, tickets are reasonable. GO IRISH!!

No way. He relied almost solely on Floyd. Rees taught us that when a QB stares down his receivers he throws 4 picks a game. He showed improvement throughout each start but Rees is not the starting QB this year. A healthy Crist that is comfortable with the playbook is infinitely better.

Totally agree with you here. Crist is without a doubt our guy unless something bizarre happens between now and then.

I am a Crist guy because he is a huge, relatively mobile kid with lots of talent, a big arm, an incredible work ethic, and a great attitude. I also prefer to defer to the upper-classman.

So keeping in mind that Tommy Rees was a small, true-freshman QB thrown into the fire with no experience, the only place that I thought he was visibly superior to Crist in action was within the 10 yard line (this is different than saying he does not do other things well- he does). For some reason, Rees just seemed to be able to keep things simple and score. If 3 wide recievers are all cutting and you are getting good blocking, someone is going to get open (note: probably Floyd) and he got it to them. Sometimes I feel like Crist, and even Jimmy, made things too complicated. Maybe it was the blocking.

I'm not sure which QB you were talking about? I just know Rees didn't throw any picks during the Sun Bowl, no and the only plays that turned into Big plays were 3 drop step slants to Floyd where he broke tackles. Not being disrespectful, but I'm not sure what you're talking about with the 4 picks? Whats wrong with taking advantage of a "Key Player" in Floyd? Rees is a QB who relies on his short game and check downs, I'd much rather have small plays that add up and give us yardage, than Crist with a bomb that turns into an incomplete pass or pick? Rees gives us results, Dayne gives me worries...Yes he is mobile, but going outside the pocket for him, shows his vulnerability, hence the injuries that are prone to follow him...

Against USC, it was 3 picks and a lost fumble; all of which happened deep in our territory, mind you.

Rees threw more than double Crist's Interceptions per Attempt (.05 v. .02).

You also have to take into consideration a true freshmen vs a Junior, and I don't know why we're battling this, Rees wins games for us, we all win when the Irish win? I could def. see the 3 int and lost fumble, Freshman, at USC? C-mon, that is def a hostile environment for anyone. USC was a ground and pound game and we won at USC for the first time in a VERY VERY long time.... I guess what Maverick was trying to say with the stare-down was Jacory Harris who is a 3rd year starter v. a true freshman who produced results during the Sun Bowl....

Our 2010 offense averaged 3.6 more APPG with Crist than Rees, and that was without the benefit of our late season defense, rushing, and conservative play-calling.

Crist was simply a better QB last year.

I understand age comes with maturity and better game-time decision making skills, There's always room for improvement with Rees. Yes that is a bonus when it comes to Crist in the average per game increase, I just think we hold a better chance with Rees, nothing too complex in the playbook for him his first year, it was short safe plays that gave us an edge, of course he is going to improve this year, I was at the Blue and Gold game and Dayne did throw an INT and he was def. not sharp. (Hence the injuries) The fans were actually booing Crist when he walked on the field and cheered for Rees, it was crazy, the rain didn't help the situation though for sure, we got drenched!

There are plenty of people here who think Rees is pretty close to his ceiling already.

Kelly's going to start whoever gives us the best chance to win. I'm willing to go all-in on Crist. Care to wager some vBucks?

You're backwards, Rees threw the pick, Dayne didn't. Neither of them did anything of note during the limited amount of time they were playing. The only real offense that came out of the game came from the newcomers. And I highly doubt fans were booing Dayne. ND fans are better than that.

I mean we can nit pick stats and statistics all we want, I just thought the offense gelled more fluently with Rees. Who has said Rees has hit his peak? He is 19 years old?? No faith in improvement, mentoring, practice, film room? I'm just going by what I saw and that's all I'm going by. I do think they will start Crist, but I think he will be one a short leash, and Tommy will be waiting by the signal calling to go in... I just starting this Irish Envy stuff, not sure what vBucks are? I don't need to wager anything, I'm just hopeful that he will start, but I'm not the coach... Just a fan..

He was def. being booed, I was right there in the middle of it, right by the student section. They even mentioned it on the local news that night. Oh yeah, Rees did have the INT, he did go 10-15 with 2 dropped TD passes though. Hendrix and Everett did have very good games though.. I apologize bout the INT info, def forgot about that, oh well...

Welcome to IE :) Nothing wrong with some friendly debate.

Rees may be close to his ceiling because the factors holding him back, namely his lack of mobility and arm strength, cannot easily be improved. Rees would have to improve his accuracy and ball security dramatically (~70% and 3:1 TD/INT) in order to compensate for the limitations his lack of athleticism puts on Kelly's offense.

Just my :twocents:

Ah well I left early cause I couldn't stand the rain anymore. It was a bit too chilly for my liking and I wanted to avoid getting sick at all costs! But that's a shame that they would boo him. From everything I've heard Dayne is an awesome guy who doesn't deserve that kind of treatment. And really he did not play as poorly as everyone likes to think last year. Unfortunately I think people are a bit blinded by the 4-4 record (which had MUCH more to do with defense than Dayne. Dayne single handedly kept the team competitive against MSU and Michigan) I know consistency was an issue, but you will never see Rees have a quarter like the quarter Dayne had against BC. Nor will you see Tommy as on fire as Dayne was at times against MSU. That's the difference, Dayne has showed that he can be great, and with consistency will be great, whereas Rees has shown that he can do enough to win, while sometimes even being a liability to the team (like in the USC game). But as many have said before, I trust Kelly and his ability to choose and develop the QB that is best for the team (which, I believe will be Crist!)

I just hope hard work and dedication in the weight-room can improve some of those qualities, but I do understand that you can't just become mobile. I am just simply satisfied with screens and slants to move up the field. I think his accuracy is more affective than his arm strength. Pocket passer is fine with me. I just know when Crist goes outside the tackle box he's def. in trouble. Of course Dayne has the arm-strength and mobility, but they are also liabilities. I just think he's an ok QB almost outta here, and Rees is just starting his career. Thank you for the Irish Welcoming

My wife and I left a little early too, the rain def. started coming down in buckets, I think consistency wins games though, which you admit Crist has issues with. Of course all of us would love blowout games after another, but I am simply fine with getting the job done and getting back to basics. Crist did have a good game against MSU, but they did lose the game in the end. (Yes, by a gutsy/heartbreaking decision by MSU's coach) that still burns me inside thinking about that. I do think Kelly will make the right decision in the end. Dayne was a nice guy, when we were at the autograph signing, "Teo" actually wished us a happy anniversary! it was crazy. GO IRISH

Isn't that like basically admitting you're okay with the QB being average and the one player weighing the team down, though?

I understand that Rees' accuracy and touch on short throws are his strong suits and his quick delivery accentuates that as a huge part of his game. I also understand that in some ways in comparison to Crist, that Rees looks better because of those skills.

However, we can't be satisfied with being tied down by our QB. Maybe in another system, in another era, we'd be able to win at the highest levels with an average game-manager, but I don't think that can happen anymore.

I think back to the USC game when Rees faced a lot of pressure and had Trojans all up in his grill. It's not a pretty sight to have an immobile QB with a weak arm when that happens. Experience will help him in those situations, but when our tackle gets beat and Rees can do nothing but take the hit or risk a quick throw 10 yards down field, well the offense isn't working like it should.

To add on to Eric's point above, the biggest draw back to playing Rees is that it allows to opposing defense to cheat into the box big time.

He doesn't have the arm strength to make them respect his deep ball, so the safeties creep up. His scramble isn't a threat, so opponents can further load up the box and blitz the bejesus out of him.

This ends up killing our running game and drastically increasing the chance of an interception on those short passes Rees is so good at.

In short, Rees' lack of athleticism neutralizes all of the schematic advantages inherent in Kelly's vertical passing spread. So even if we have to settle for a less accurate/ streakier QB with more athleticism (which I don't think we will), it's probably worth it for the schematic advantage alone.

We're all going by a kid who was just thrown in the system, of course he was going to struggle at USC, need I remind everyone of jimmys encounters with the trojens! As for the blitzing, there's always an answer to that, SREENS! Of course Kelly knows that. To beat an over aggressive D lime USC that's all you need, if that doesn't work, 3 step slants. It'd all strategy and we've got that, there is always an answer to a problem. I just don't think Crist has the durability when he's showing off his "mobility."

Yes it's ok to have an average QB that wins games and takes care of the ball, or we can have Crist who is injury prone and takes shots down field that end up as incompletes or INT'S. I'll take Rees who has room to improve and can only get better with work and experience.
