Sad but true! I am an Indiana native, but live in Tennessee now, and let me tell you, there is not much love for our Irish here. ND fans here are laughed at, and told that ND is no longer relevant....dispite the Irish have a 42-32-5 record against the SEC, including a stellar 5-1 record against the Alabama Crimson Tide (Bear Bryant 0-4 against Irish) but yet, we are laughed at, simply because we haven't played anyone big. Laughing at the fact of losing to Navy, the 2007 bowl where LSU won 41-14.

They say this is "past" but this is the same conference that still brags about a 1-9 bowl game record against Ohio State. All eyes are on Coach Kelly, and I think he had to completely restart the program last season, and look forward to great things this season. Current indications show ND could be ranked around #6 in the nation....I don't think we will get a national championship this season no....but I do think we could get in a great bowl game, against the SEC....and WIN! Nothing would be better than to get revenge on LSU or go for a 6-1 record against Alabama.

The blind SEC only sees in the south, not South Bend....where the Gold Dome holds a winning record against them. Here is the thing to the SEC blind......believe all you want....call us Dunder Domers, the Hail Mary God Squad.....blah blah....fact is, ND is still relevant, and on a return to our former glory, so let the words NOTRE DAME travel through the south, and spread the word.....the Irish are coming, and there is nothing you can do to stop them!

Plus Ara Parseghian said he would love to see ND win another championship before his time comes to leave the earth, so let's give him one!

The south is good for 4 things:

1. The women
2. The food
3. The music
4. College football

They can keep everything else. I have days I wish we had just let them secede. They'd be a third-world country by now.

I could care less what SEC country thinks. They are literally the dumbest Americans in the country by every major study. The only thing I care about is being competitive for recruits from Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. If we can continue to do that Billy Bob can keep being a hater until the end of time for all I care.

I've actually had nothing but good luck in SEC country with regards to their fans.

1.) We took a golf trip to Knoxville, TN a few years back. Myself (Irish fan) and three of my Ohio State buddies. That Friday, we made our way to a BW3's, and was there all night, talking it up with the locals, who were very friendly. We told them we'd be back the next day to watch ND/OSU play their games. When we arrived, we saw a sea of Tennessee jerseys, but they had reserved 2 of the big screens near the bar and put on the OSU game and the ND game. Not one person said a word, and many would come up to chit-chat with us about our teams/players/recruits. It was great.

2.) I know this isn't SEC territory, but we went to a Clemson game a few years ago. I had my ND Jersey on, and again, my friends had their Buckeye attire (my sister played volleyball in S.C., and she got us tickets for the game). At halftime, the entire stadium just got up and left. We followed. Behind the stadium, there were campers as far as the eye could see. We just followed the crowd through them all. About every other camper, I'd hear, "Hey! ND! Over here!" I'd be thrown a cold beverage, maybe one in a shot glass or test tube, and have a short converstion with the campers. We stayed a bit to long, as we missed the rest of the game just visiting with people outside the stadium (and drinking their beer, which not ONE person objected too. We actually had one guy give us crap about turning down about our 5th shots of whiskey).

I've tried not to throw blanket statements over entire fan bases (except Ohio State fans, they suck), but I've had nothing but good luck with fans of "southern" teams.

Around here though, MOST of the Alabama fans have respect for ND because of the history....its the Tennessee orange pumpkins who have no respect for anyone but themselves, and their 3 national championships.

IMO I have found the ignorant intolerant SEC fans tend to be the younger generation. Where as the older generations who grew up during the time when ND was dominant tend not to be so hostile towards ND. Just in my experience of course. Though Oregon fans tend to be despicable wretches in all regards.

One of my best friends from high school was stationed at the Air Force base in Biloxi, MS, and I was down visiting during one of my schools breaks. First of all, as I said above, the food, music and women were all off the charts. The casinos in Biloxi are actually a halfway decent place to party, and in the local dive bars the beer is cheap, the chicks are drunk, and the music is live (we don't have a lot of that where I'm from, and if we do its just cover bands). Also, the weather was nice. Balmy.

One day, though, on our way back to Biloxi from playing golf in some other place that wasn't Biloxi (not good with MS geography), we stopped at this rib joint that was basically a shed surrounded by picnic benches. The ribs were OUTSTANDING, but the guy sitting near us at our picnic table apparently did not care too much for us.

He was a classic southerner. Kind of reminded me in looks (but not demeanor) of Ron White. Now, this guy was eyeing us from the minute we sat down. He watched us eat for a few awkward minutes, then got up and came over and sat near us. He started off doing his best impression of a normal, semi-nice human being. He asked us where we were from and how we ended up there. Then he asked us if we liked the food. "Oh, yeah. The ribs are awesome," I said. "Well, I'm glad you like them. Make sure ya get yer fill, now, 'cuz I don't wanna see you Yanks around here again."

Umm.....oK, then. Kind of spoiled my meal, seeing as how I have seen Deliverance and I could now only think about the manner in which I could meet my possibly-imminent demise.

So that was basically it for me and the south. I don't have much use for it, and apparently it doesn't have much use for me. I still love me some Allman Bros., CCR, Skynard, BBQ, and blondes with drawls. I just like to partake in all of that stuff north of the Mason-Dixon line. I import my South, thank you very much.

The ones I hate most are the second fans that take turns giving Bj to the team that is cheating the best that year. I moved down here with family when I was 11, don't want to be anywhere else! But **** the sec! Going to talk mad **** if we beat a second in a bowl game

Not so fast, my friend! People like to bash the south for being *** backward hicks, but Forbes just had an article out this week that ranked the best states for businesses. This report included quality of life, education, tax rates, etc. Florida, North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee were all top 25.

Say what you want about the south, but if they seceded, a lot of people would be screwed. Texas alone accounted for 70% of the country's new jobs in 2008. You wanna talk about secession? Check out NJ, NY, CA, and the midwest. People are fleeing those states like crazy. I work for a national moving business and the picture is clear as day...California will ask the feds for a bailout ions before any state in the South dreams of it.

Sorry for the political rant.

I went to the South for a wedding (Alabama) once and also my buddy lives in North Carolina, so I've visited a few times...and I really liked it. People were really friendly and laid-back. The food my wife and I had in Alabama was absolutely insane - best bbq ribs I've ever tasted (we went to a hole-in-the-wall place b/c we wanted authenticity). It was a former ND player's wedding, so it was very ND friendly, but even in the city (Montgomery), people were cool. In North Carolina we went to Tiger Woods' first tournament after his scandal, and the people at the golf tournament were great, and I had my ND gear on in full force.

So in my limited experience, I liked it. But I've never had to live there, so...

See NDinLA's post re: ribs.

And NDinLA, see my post on the previous page re: my experience at an "authentic" rib joint.

LOL...crazy story. I was at an airport one time with time to kill, so I watched MNF at a bar. I was sitting next to this guy and we started talking. Great guy, lived in Washington but was from Arkansas, and I'm talking about the boondocks of Arkansas, the back roads. He told me deep down there, racism is still alive and well; the craziest thing he told me was that the street he grew up on was sponsored by the KKK - it's written on the street sign!!!

But I'm not one to paint broad strokes with small samples. We can sit here and bag on every single part of the United States, Los Angeles and New York included. I'm kind of sensitive to it b/c USC people out here rip on South Bend all the time, when IMO it's a great place to live and raise a family. I'm sure the South is the same. Sure there's bad to it but there's also some great things about it. To each his own...

Sidenote...I guess. Kinda odd for me when I hear Texas classified as a Southern state. During most of that turmoil, Texas was still mostly Mexico, and Spain. I lived in San Antonio, and it is still pretty much Hispanic dominated. Lived in far West Texas/New Mexico area, and it is still Spanish/Mestizo/Native dominated. History stories talk about a North/South battle in Southern New Mexico, glorified to all hell. This is essentially what happened: Northern troops came down, some locals banned together to resist. North said "We're going that way." Neighbors said, "Cool."

(Hope I am not insulting any historians, but that is essentially what happened.)

You can toss those test scores/ SAT/ ACT out the window when it comes to way of life. They've got it figured out, have for a long time, they do it well, are some of the most courteous and polite people I've met, and aren't changing.

Not to mention the hot outfits girls wear to football games and fancy sun dresses women wear to games

Ahhhhh the Battle of Glorieta pass, New Mexicos only claim to civil war fame. More soldiers got drunk and lost in the forest than died in that skirmish.

I moved to the south (Atlanta) in '05. And I have to deal with sec talk every year, and sure it gets old. (Esp since the SEC has won the National Championship EVERY year since I have been here) For the most part though, Atlanta hasn't been too bad on the Irish. Sure it will help when we start winning consistently and not getting crushed in bowl games. I loved living in PA and NYC, but the 4 things that are mentioned that the south is good for are pretty awesome in my opinion!!! ...Women, Food, Music, football..and you forgot the biggest thing...THE WEATHER!!! Go Irish!
