You'll have to define "worst".

Some teams have lots of fair weather fans, and others have insane/ violent fans. USC has lots of the former, and Michigan has lots of the latter.

I don't think the state school's fans are that inherently different.

It depends on how good the program is. Bad programs don't have as many passionate fans.

It also depends on the size of the school and how much partying goes on at the school. BYU's fans can't be THAT bad. But there are armies of drunken students at places like Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State, etc. A bad apple will ruin the bunch, and tens of thousands of drunk fans is a bad recipe.

I'm from NY but I live in MS right now for work (NOT PERMANENT THANK GOD).. and I listen to Paul Finebaum from time to time. Auburn and Alabama fans are, by far, the dumbest, most ignorant, one-sided derelicts I have ever heard. No joke, Alabama fans literally think they can beat any bottom tier team in the NFL. They actually said that on the air and one idiot after another called up and agreed. They are in a fantasy world down here.

Based on my own personal pet peeves, I would have to say Oregon fans:

You know how teenagers get a little bit of a taste of freedom and independence, and think they know everything about the world? Oregon fans have gotten a small taste of being a nationally prominent program, and now think that they know all there is to know about College football, after following it for 3-4 years. Amongst the things that Oregon fans "know" are:

1. Notre Dame has always lived off of their name, and hasn't accomplished anything of note on the field since the '20s, when Lincoln was still President.

2. The AP has never crowned a "true" National Champion that wasn't a PAC-10 team. Every single AP poll was a joke, except the one that had USC at #1, even though they didn't even play in the BCS title game.

3. The key to big time recruiting is personalized comic books and Xboxes in each locker, not scheduling big time opponents and beating them on National TV.

4. Chip Kelly revolutionized College Football by introducing the Spread Offense..........2 years ago.

5. Terry Baker was the last University of Oregon Heisman Trophy winner.

There was an article a few weeks back, can't remember where i read it but Penn Sate had the worst college football fans according to them.

USC fans are mostly posers. I remember going to the Coliseum in 2000 to watch them play ND and USC got booed in their own stadium.

As you have seen and you will see, it all has to do with where you live and/or personal experience. I live in SoCal, so I say USC fans, who fall into 3 basic camps: Raider fans who jump on and off the bandwagon, elitist pricks/yuppies that you want to hit in the mouth just because of what they stand for and how they look, and normal fans (the minority).

But if you're SB or Michigan, it'll be Michigan fans or MSU fans. If you live in Ohio, it'll be OSU fans. If you live in Tennessee, Tennessee fans. Etc etc etc. I can tell you that Ohio St fans and LSU fans have been near the top of many lists I've read on this popular subject.

And I can guarantee you that ND fans are at the top of almost every fan base's lists. We are not very well liked around the nation, like it or not.

A lot of the NC fans down here loved their trip to ND. Said everybody was welcoming them and wishing them safe travels afterwards. They loved every bit of it except the game. lol

Most of the vitriol directed towards our fan base seems to come from: (1) ND's perennial ability to stay in the spot light, regardless of our on-field results; (2) our irrepressible and frequently unjustified optimism; and (3) perceived arrogance.

Even the most virulent ND haters have to admit that our stadium and game environment is among the best for away fans in the nation (whether or not that's a good thing is up for debate.) I've also never heard of anyone getting harassed or assaulted by ND fans on game day.

Im with NDinLA and jason... obviously... ND said everything i was going to... thing is... the fair weather element will be ND fans if we win another title... I know this b/c they all were ND fans in the early 90's...

I loved growing up during the Toby Bailey UCLA basketball run and see "life long fans" take the USC off their backpacks and folders and put UCLA all over them... when questioned about the obvious BS of their actions (and believe me I questioned ALL of them...lol) the response was almost uniform... "Well i have always loved UCLA basketball and USC football..."

W....T.....F.....

ever heard of the MSU basketball fan who went for Michigan in football???

anyway, by worst fan base, I hear "groups that collectively take it WAY too far and live through the team.... total loss of perspective."

So by that... hard to match Bammer and tOSU fans... definition of myopic. So imo no list is legit without mention of BOTH

Kentucky Fans are the worst i have dealt with, not only do they brag about basketball but they think that their football team is good just because they are in the SEC. I had a "diehard" try to convince me they could win any other confrence.
my question: "didnt they lose to the third best team in the Big East in their bowl"
his response: "the Big East is a quality confrence"

I agree with you on this one. A lot of my friends from high school went to Purdue, so I went down there for the ND/Purdue games while I was at ND ('05 and '07 games). The fans were not only rude, obnoxious, and confrontational, but also criminal at times. I saw an elderly couple wearing ND gear get harassed and spit on by a group of PU students. F*** the Irish chants could be heard throughout the day as well. I told my friends about this and he told me the student body, in his words, "pride themselves on being douchebags."

For those of you that don't know much about Purdue gameday tradition, they have a thing called Breakfast Club. Students show up at the bars in costumes at 5-6am and drink until kickoff. Gamedays are more about drinking and being an a**hole than winning a football game. I can't say I blame them since they do not have much to look forward to as a PU fan.

USC fans are fair-weather fans, but are surprisingly easy to get along with on gamedays. I haven't had any negative experiences with Michigan fans, but they do seem a bit delusional and arrogant about their team. Michigan State gets my vote for 2nd worse behind Purdue because they have a very similar, classless approach to football games and are insufferable when they beat us.

As far as ND goes, all I've heard from visiting fans is how vibrant, pleasant, and friendly the gameday atmosphere is on campus. The biggest knocks against us are the many delusional fans we have, as well as the fair-weather/bandwagon fans, which most of us true fans hate as well.

you linked the front page of scout NDSW... care to explain.

There was an exchange between a NDFan (jsdirish) and a host of UM fans/mods. Was merely an example UM fans and how they like calling names instead of having a civil rival converstation.

Does that answer you question AcAmP?

If you are interested go:

Scout.com - College and High School Football, Basketball, Recruiting, NFL, and MLB Front Page
ND Page
Notre Dame > Forums > The New Ara > screw hoke and his recruitsMy Menu
Half way down the page jsdirish links his exchange (not sure why the link is not working).

Oh, no doubt. I wrote on an ISD thread yesterday about the culture shock I had (after dealing with USC/Raider/Dodger fans at ballgames my whole life) when I first went to a ND game. Shocked at how the fans/workers treated USC fans. SOOOOOOO nice.

But ask people about ND fans away from Notre Dame stadium, and you get a far different reaction, for many of the reasons you stated above. However, I will say that when we were/are rolling, that 'perceived arrogance' is actual arrogance from a certain segment of our fans.
